Chapter 4 - Chapter 4

Detective Marcus Hale crouched near the driveway, running gloved fingers over the gravel. Every grain seemed ordinary, every scrape faint. But he knew better. Someone had been here—someone deliberate.

He stood and examined the street carefully, circling the house. The tires of a vehicle, perhaps the dark SUV, might have left a faint trace, but it had been cleaned, obscured, or naturally erased by the night. Hale's gut told him the perpetrator was precise, leaving nothing obvious behind.

Eliza Vance joined him, frowning. "I don't see a thing. No footprints, no marks, nothing."

Hale shook his head. "That's the point. They don't want to be found. Every detail hidden, every move calculated. But even precision leaves a trace, somewhere."

They moved to the front porch and looked over the small yard, checking for any disturbed grass, scuffed gravel, or broken plants. Hale's eyes swept the edges of the property, noting shadows, angles, and potential lines of escape.

Still nothing.

Frustrated, Hale sighed. "We need to talk to the neighbors. Someone must have seen or heard something."

They started down the street, knocking on doors. The morning air was crisp, and the neighborhood looked calm, normal—deceptively so.

Most residents shook their heads politely.

"No, we didn't see anything," one man said, adjusting his hat. "Everything was quiet last night."

"Nothing unusual here," an elderly woman said. "I sleep early, don't hear much after ten."

Hale nodded politely each time but felt the tension building. Every denial was another barrier between them and the truth.

Finally, an older woman in a neatly kept house hesitated. Her eyes shifted nervously. "Well… maybe I did see something," she said cautiously. "A dark SUV, I think. Late. Slid down the street… headlights off. Looked like it was… moving carefully, like it didn't want to be seen."

Hale's ears perked immediately. "Which direction did it go?"

She pointed toward a narrow side road branching off the main street. "That way… past the curve and the old warehouse. I thought it was odd at the time, but… I didn't think anyone would notice."

Eliza scribbled notes quickly. "Thank you. That's helpful."

Hale nodded, his mind already running ahead. Every small piece mattered—the angle of the street, the path of the SUV, the way it moved without being seen. "Good. This could be our first real lead."

He glanced back at Lena's house. The gravel was smooth again, the faint scratches nearly invisible in daylight. Whoever had taken her was meticulous—calm, methodical, and careful to erase almost everything.

Hale turned back to the woman. "You're sure about the vehicle? Anything else?"

She hesitated. "It was dark… headlights off… engine quiet. And… the figure inside? Tall. Broad. Hard to make out. But… it felt deliberate. Purposeful."

Hale exchanged a look with Eliza. "Purposeful," he muttered, the word heavy with implication. He could feel the weight of it. Whoever had taken Lena wasn't careless. Every detail, every movement, was calculated.

They finished canvassing the street, talking to a few more neighbors, all offering the same stories—either nothing or glimpses of a shadow, a vehicle, a hint of movement. Hale's mind pieced the fragments together. The SUV had been seen sliding down a side road, headlights off. Someone had been careful. Someone had planned this.

He straightened, his hands tightening into fists. "That's enough for now. We know where to start. That road—the one the woman pointed out—we check it first. Tire tracks, security cameras, anything that might show us a path."

Eliza nodded, frowning. "Do you think we're close?"

Hale shook his head. "Close enough to know the hunt has begun. But not close enough to find her yet. Whoever this is… they're always a step ahead. And they're patient."

He paused, staring down the street toward the branching road. A chill ran through him. The first trace of the SUV was faint, fleeting—but it was enough to follow.

"Let's move," he said quietly, voice tense. "Time is the only thing working against us… and against her."
