Chapter 1 - The Last Letter

The mountains of Rezang La didn't just have peaks; they had teeth. At 16,000 feet, the wind didn't just blow—it bit through the thickest wool, searching for skin to freeze.

Captain Arjun sat inside a small, cramped bunker, the dim yellow light of a kerosene lamp flickering against the stone walls. His fingers were numb, but he forced them to hold a small pencil. Before him lay a crumpled piece of paper—the most difficult mission of his life.

Writing a letter home.

"If you're reading this, Ma, it means the mountains decided to keep me," he whispered to himself, the words catching in the dry, thin air.

The Ghostly Silence

Outside, the world was a void of white and grey. His second-in-command, a young, energetic corporal named Imran, poked his head inside.

"Sir, the boys are restless. The radio has been silent for three hours. It's too quiet," Imran said, his breath forming thick clouds of mist.

Arjun looked up, his eyes bloodshot from lack of sleep. "Silence on the border is never a good sign, Imran. It's like a predator holding its breath."

The Distant Thunder

Arjun stood up, his joints creaking. He walked to the narrow slit of the bunker that served as a window. Far across the valley, something caught his eye—a faint, rhythmic flash, like a pulse.

It wasn't lightning. It was too low, too orange.

"Pack the letter, Imran," Arjun said, his voice suddenly cold and sharp like a bayonet. "And tell the men to fix their boots. The storm isn't coming... it's already here."

Suddenly, the silence was shattered. A low whistle, growing louder and shriller, tore through the sky.

BOOM.

The first shell hit the ridge fifty yards away, spraying snow and rock like shrapnel. The ground beneath them groaned. Arjun didn't flinch. He grabbed his helmet and slung his rifle over his shoulder.

"Radio the Base!" Arjun roared over the rising thunder of artillery. "Tell them Rezang La is under heavy fire. We are standing our ground!"

The war hadn't just knocked on their door. It had kicked it down.
