Chapter 2 - CHAPTER TWO: The Man In the Woods

Elena's footsteps crunched over the damp leaves, each one louder than she expected. The forest had a presence, silent but suffocating, as if it had been waiting for her.

She stopped at the flickering light ahead, the only clue that someone or something was there. Her pulse pounded, a mix of fear and anticipation. Logic whispered, turn back, but curiosity had her frozen. She couldn't. She wouldn't.

The light came from a small clearing. A figure stood near it, motionless, as if he were part of the shadows themselves. Tall, broad-shouldered, calm impossibly calm and yet every fiber of him radiated power and purpose.

"Hello?" Her voice wavered. She hated that it did.

He didn't move at first. Then slowly, deliberately, he turned his head. His eyes were dark, deep, and startlingly intelligent. They seemed to see her not just her body, but her thoughts, her doubts, her certainty.

"I've been expecting you," he said, his voice low, smooth, and confident. It was the kind of voice that didn't just speak… it commanded attention.

Elena's stomach flipped. What is he doing out here? How does he know me?

She took a cautious step forward. "Who… who are you?"

"I am someone who can help," he said, almost casually, though his gaze pinned her like she couldn't move. "And you… are someone who needs to see the truth."

"The truth about… what?" she asked, trying to sound steadier than she felt.

He stepped closer, the firelight casting shadows across his features, highlighting a sharp jaw, a gaze that could unnerve even the most rational mind, and a presence that was impossible to ignore.

"About Blackridge," he said simply. "About the patients. About yourself."

Elena blinked. "About myself?"

He nodded, expression unreadable. "You don't know what you're capable of. And soon… you'll have no choice but to decide if you'll accept it."

Her rational mind screamed, This is insane. Step back. Walk away.

But her body didn't obey. Her curiosity, her fascination the part of her she usually locked behind logic pulled her forward.

And as she took another step, she felt it: the first spark of something she shouldn't feel, a pull toward a man she barely knew but already couldn't ignore.

"You should leave," he said, his voice softer now, almost a warning. "It's dangerous."

She swallowed, heart racing. "And if I don't?"

A faint, almost imperceptible smile curved his lips. "Then you'll find out just how much danger you can handle."

Elena's eyes scanned the clearing, trying to find an exit, any rational escape, but the forest seemed endless, walls of trees pressing in. She shivered despite the heat from the small fire he had lit, imagining how easily she could be swallowed by the darkness.

"What do you want from me?" she asked finally, her voice steadier than she felt.

He tilted his head, studying her as if he were reading a book. "Not what I want… but what you need. And whether you're ready to face it."

Elena's breath hitched. "I don't… I don't understand."

He stepped closer, and the air between them seemed to thrum with an energy she couldn't name. It wasn't threatening, not exactly but it made her pulse hammer in a way that science could never explain.

"Understand this," he said softly, almost conspiratorially, "nothing in Blackridge happens by accident. Not the patients. Not the night. Not you."

Her mind raced. Questions spiraled, but one thought refused to leave: how does he know her name? How does he know what she thinks?

And yet… a part of her, a reckless, daring part she usually ignored, wanted to stay. To listen. To see.

Adrian's eyes glimmered in the firelight. "Curiosity can be dangerous," he said. "But sometimes… it's the only thing that saves you."

Elena's hand twitched, nearly reaching out to touch the space between them to test if this was real, if he was real. Her rational mind shouted Don't, but her heart whispered

Yes.

A sudden rustle from the trees made her flinch. The shadows shifted, and for a heartbeat, she feared it wasn't just the wind. Then he stepped forward, placing himself subtly between her and the darkness.

"You're safe… for now," he murmured.

Safe. The word echoed, but didn't reach her brain properly. Because she knew already in the way you know things you can't explain that her life had changed forever. That this man, this mysterious healer, had just pulled her into a world she couldn't ignore, and she would never be the same again.
