The salt in the air felt like a warning, but to Kaito, it felt like home.
Standing on the edge of the jagged cliffs of Oakhaven, seventeen-year-old Kaito gripped the rusted hilt of his father's old dagger. Below him, the Forbidden Sea roared—a vast, churning graveyard of ships and legends. In his village, looking at the horizon for too long was considered a curse. But Kaito couldn't stop.
Suddenly, the heavy iron compass in his pocket grew warm. He pulled it out. It wasn't pointing North. The needle was spinning wildly before locking onto a single point in the center of the dark storm clouds miles away. It began to glow with a faint, ghostly blue light.
"Kaito! Get away from the edge!" a voice screamed from behind.
It was the Village Guard. They were coming to take the compass. They called it a 'relic of the devil.'
Kaito looked at the glowing needle, then at the soldiers closing in. A smirk played on his lips. "Sorry, guys," he whispered to the wind. "The sea is calling, and I'm finally answering."
With a leap of faith, Kaito dived off the cliff, plummeting toward the crashing waves below. His adventure had officially begun.
