Chapter 10 - PLANNING THE REAL ATTACK

Marcus's POV

Marcus stood on the ridge overlooking Shadowpine territory and wanted to burn it all down.

His plan had failed. Spectacularly. Keira was still Alpha. Worse, she was getting comfortable in Mooncrest like she belonged there. Like she wasn't a corrupted female pretending to lead a pack she'd stolen from a male who deserved it.

The regional gathering had been supposed to be his victory. He'd stood in front of two hundred wolves and exposed her for exactly what she was. A female Alpha compromised by forbidden lust. Unfit to lead. Unworthy of power.

But Cade Silverclaw had played his hand perfectly.

A political alliance. A clever reframing that made Keira look strategic instead of weak. Three months of forced proximity that everyone believed was about pack safety and combined resources.

Marcus knew better. He could smell the mate bond from three territories away. Could see the way they looked at each other when they thought no one was watching. Could feel the darkness growing between them like a living thing.

But knowing wasn't enough. Knowing didn't give him the power he deserved.

He needed a new plan. A better plan. One that didn't rely on council votes or regional politics. One that would destroy them both permanently.

That night, Marcus met with his supporters in the basement of an abandoned warehouse on Shadowpine's southern border. Derek was there, along with seventeen other wolves who'd agreed to stand against a female Alpha. But tonight, Marcus needed more than agreement. He needed loyalty. He needed wolves willing to do things that couldn't be undone.

"The regional council won't move," Marcus said, pacing in front of them. "They've accepted the political alliance. Keira's safe from exile."

"Then we challenge her," Derek said. "Force a leadership fight."

"She'd win," one of the older wolves said. "She's an excellent fighter."

"Not against multiple opponents," Marcus countered. "Not against wolves willing to fight without rules. But we can't do that. The council would retaliate. We'd all be executed for mutiny."

Silence fell over the group.

Then Marcus said what they were all thinking. "We need an outside force. Something the council can't trace back to us. Something that would eliminate her without direct responsibility."

Derek's eyes narrowed. "What are you suggesting?"

"Hunters," Marcus said quietly.

The word hung in the air like poison.

Every werewolf in the room went rigid. Hunters were the enemy of all werewolves. Humans who tracked and killed wolves for money. For sport. For the twisted satisfaction of hunting something that could fight back.

"No," one of the younger wolves said, standing up. "That's betrayal of the worst kind. That's giving humans access to our people."

"Our people?" Marcus laughed bitterly. "Our people have a female Alpha who's compromised by forbidden lust. Our people are too weak to handle a real leader. Maybe they deserve to bleed."

The room went cold.

Derek stood slowly. "You're talking about genocide."

"I'm talking about revolution," Marcus corrected. "Keira doesn't deserve to lead. Cade Silverclaw doesn't deserve to exist. And if a few collateral deaths are necessary to restore order to the werewolf world, that's the price of progress."

He watched the moment some of them understood. Watched the moment they realized what he was asking them to become. Some left. Derek and three others stayed.

Those three were enough.

The next morning, Marcus made a call he swore he'd never make. A number he'd kept since before Keira became Alpha. A contact from the dark corners of the werewolf underground.

A hunter named Graves.

The phone rang twice before a rough voice answered. "Yeah?"

"I need your help," Marcus said, keeping his voice low even though he was alone in his quarters. "And I can give you everything you want in exchange."

There was a pause. Then, "Who is this?"

"Someone with access. Someone with information. Someone who wants two specific Alphas dead."

Another pause. Longer this time. Then, "I'm listening."

Marcus explained in careful detail. Keira Blackthorn. Alpha of Shadowpine. Female. Powerful. Currently residing in Mooncrest territory as part of a political alliance. And Cade Silverclaw. Alpha of Mooncrest. Male. Ice-blue eyes. Silver hair. The one protecting her.

"They're together," Marcus said. "Weakest when they're together. When their mate bond is making them vulnerable. When they're thinking about each other instead of threats."

"Mate bond?" Graves sounded excited now. The way predators sounded when they caught scent of wounded prey. "Two Alphas? That's rare."

"Very rare," Marcus confirmed. "And very powerful. They're stronger together than apart. But they're also distracted. Emotional. Compromised."

Graves was quiet for a long time. Marcus could hear the calculation happening on the other end of the line.

"I need information," Graves finally said. "Layout of the pack house. Guard patterns. Weaknesses. If I'm going after two Alphas simultaneously, I need every advantage."

"I'll get you everything," Marcus promised. "And I'll give you access to both packs. Shadowpine trusts me. Mooncrest is expecting Shadowpine warriors to visit for alliance-building purposes. You could be inside either territory within a week."

Graves laughed. Low and dangerous and absolutely thrilled. "You're actually going to betray your own pack. Your own Alpha. Your own kind."

Marcus felt the weight of what he was becoming settle over him like a heavy coat. He was crossing a line that couldn't be uncrossed. He was about to invite humans into werewolf territory. He was about to become the kind of traitor that werewolves executed without hesitation.

But Keira had stolen his position.

Cade was protecting her.

The universe owed him recompense.

"I'm going to eliminate the threat," Marcus said coldly. "Everything else is just details."

"When do we move?" Graves asked.

Marcus smiled. It was the smile of a male who'd decided to burn down the world. The smile of someone who'd crossed past the point of redemption and found he didn't care.

"Give me two weeks," Marcus said. "I need to get the information and set up the access. Two weeks and you'll have everything you need to destroy them both."

"And in exchange?" Graves asked.

"In exchange, you take Keira Blackthorn and Cade Silverclaw out of the equation. You make them disappear. You make it look like rogues or a failed alliance or anything except what it actually is. After that, you're free to hunt in Shadowpine territory for one full season without interference. Other than that, I don't care what you do."

Graves laughed again, the sound like broken glass. "You're actually serious. You're going to give me two Alphas. Two powerful werewolves. For territory access and your revenge."

"I'm serious," Marcus confirmed.

He could hear the malice in Graves's voice when the hunter spoke again. "Then we have a deal. Two weeks. Get me the information and arrange the access. I'll do the rest."

Marcus hung up the phone.

He stood in his private quarters and stared at the wall, waiting for remorse. Waiting for guilt. Waiting for some part of him to reject what he'd just done.

Nothing came.

Just cold satisfaction and the absolute certainty that he'd made the right choice.

Keira would fall. Cade would fall. And from their ashes, Marcus Thorne would rise as the real Alpha that Shadowpine deserved. A male. A leader. Someone strong enough to take what he wanted and hold it.

Graves hung up his phone and looked at his crew.

Five hunters. Five males who'd dedicated their lives to tracking and killing werewolves. Who'd made fortunes selling wolf pelts and organs and teeth to black market collectors. Who'd learned to move through werewolf territory like ghosts.

And now they had something most hunters only dreamed about. Access. Information. And two high-ranking targets whose guard would be down because they were too busy with each other to notice the danger.

"Pack your gear," Graves said, grinning. "We're going to war with the wolves. And we're going to win."
