Chapter 1 - Chapter One: The Beginning of an Endless Memory

It was the last evening of autumn. The sky was painted with reddish sunlight, and an unusual silence surrounded everything. Under an old jackfruit tree beside a small village river sat Raihan. Looking at the flowing water, he seemed to be searching for many memories of his life.

It was beside this very river that he had first met Neela.

That day had also been a similar evening. Raihan was returning from college when he noticed a girl sitting by the river, crying. There was a strange pain in her eyes. With a little hesitation, Raihan walked closer and asked,

"Why are you crying?"

The girl looked up in surprise. Wiping her tears, she replied softly,

"Nothing… just like that."

Raihan understood that the word "nothing" was hiding a much bigger story.

They did not talk much that day. The only thing he learned was the girl's name—Neela.

After that, they began to meet often. Sometimes by the river, sometimes in front of the college, and sometimes at the bookstore.

Gradually, they became friends.

Neela was a very calm and quiet girl. But there was always a strange sadness hidden in her eyes. Sometimes Raihan would ask,

"Why are you always so quiet?"

Neela would smile gently and say,

"Not every story in a person's life can be told, Raihan."

Whenever Raihan heard those words, something would move in his heart. He felt that the girl must have been carrying many hidden pains in her life.

Days passed slowly, and their friendship grew deeper.

One afternoon, they were sitting by the river as usual. Suddenly Neela said,

"Raihan, if someday I suddenly disappear… will you remember me?"

Raihan looked surprised.

"Why are you saying something like that? Where would you go?"

Neela looked up at the sky with a faint smile.

"I don't know… but life does not always remain the same."

Raihan did not take her words seriously then. He simply said,

"If you ever go somewhere, I will find you."

Neela just smiled quietly.

But Raihan could not understand how much pain was hidden behind that smile.

One day, suddenly, Neela stopped coming to college.

At first Raihan thought she might be sick. But days passed, and there was still no news of her.

He searched for her everywhere. He asked friends, teachers, and many others, but no one knew anything.

Every afternoon he came and sat by the river, hoping Neela might appear again.

But she never came.

Days slowly turned into months.

One day a postman delivered a letter to Raihan. On the envelope it was written—"For Raihan."

The moment he saw the handwriting, he knew it was Neela's.

His hands began to tremble as he quickly opened the letter.

It said

"Dear Raihan,

When you read this letter, I may already be very far away.

You must be wondering why I suddenly disappeared. The truth is, I did not want to cause you pain, and that is why I did not tell you anything.

I had been suffering from a serious illness for a long time. The doctors said that I might not live very long.

After meeting you, my life suddenly became beautiful. Even if you never realized it, you were the greatest happiness in my life.

I did not want you to suffer the pain of losing me. That is why I left quietly.

If someday you sit beside the river and remember me… just look up at the sky once. Maybe I will be there, shining as a little star, watching you.

Take care, Raihan.

 Neela"

After reading the letter, tears rolled down Raihan's face endlessly.

He looked up at the sky. In the evening sky, one star was shining brightly.

In his heart, Raihan whispered,

"Neela… you once said that if you disappeared, I would find you. But you have gone so far away…"

The wind by the river carried a deep silence.

It felt as if nature itself was crying.

From that day on, every afternoon Raihan comes and sits by the river.

He knows Neela will never return.

Yet he still comes.

Because beside this river their story had begun.

And some stories never truly end.

They simply live on inside a person's heart.

The river had not changed.

Every afternoon, as the sun slowly leaned toward the horizon, Raihan found himself walking the same narrow path that led to the old jackfruit tree. The air still carried the soft scent of autumn, and the gentle ripples of the river whispered the same quiet melody. But everything felt different because Neela was no longer there.

It had been three months since he received her letter.

Three months of unanswered questions, silent evenings, and memories that refused to fade.

Raihan sat down on the familiar patch of grass. His eyes wandered across the water, searching not for something he could see, but for something he could feel. Sometimes, he thought he could hear her voice in the breeze.

"Raihan…"

He closed his eyes.

For a moment, it almost felt real.

"Am I losing my mind?" he whispered to himself.

The truth was, he had never really accepted that Neela was gone. The letter had given him answers, but it had also left behind a deeper emptiness. Why hadn't she told him earlier? Why hadn't she trusted him with her pain?

A sudden sound broke his thoughts.

Footsteps.

Raihan turned around quickly.

A girl stood a few steps away, holding a small bag. She looked hesitant, as if she wasn't sure whether to come closer.

"Excuse me…" she said softly.

Raihan frowned slightly. "Yes?"

The girl stepped forward and held out something in her hand.

"I think… this belongs to you."

Raihan looked down.

It was a small, worn-out notebook.

His heart skipped a beat.

"This is…" he murmured.

"Yes," the girl nodded. "I found it near the old bookstore. There was a name written inside—Raihan."

He took the notebook with trembling hands. It looked familiar, yet he couldn't remember losing it.

"Thank you," he said quietly.

The girl hesitated again, then added,

"There's something else… you might want to see inside."

Raihan looked up, confused.

"What do you mean?"

She gave a faint smile.

"I didn't read everything… but I think it's important."

Before Raihan could ask anything more, the girl turned and slowly walked away, disappearing into the fading light.

Raihan sat there, staring at the notebook.

His fingers tightened around it.

Something inside him told him that this was not just a coincidence.

With a deep breath, he opened the first page.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Neela's.

His heartbeat grew louder.

The first line read

"If you are reading this, Raihan… then maybe fate still wants you to know the truth I couldn't tell you."

Raihan's vision blurred as tears filled his eyes.

"What truth…?" he whispered.

The wind grew colder.

The sky darkened.

And beneath the silent sky, a new story was about to unfold one that Raihan was never prepared for.

Raihan's hands trembled as he turned the page.

The fading light of the evening made the words harder to see, but he couldn't wait. He leaned closer, his heart pounding louder with every second.

The next lines were written carefully, as if Neela had taken her time with every word

"I wanted to tell you everything… so many times. But every time I looked at you, I became selfish. I wanted to stay in those moments a little longer, pretending that nothing was wrong."

Raihan swallowed hard.

He could almost see her sitting beside him, smiling softly, hiding all her pain behind that quiet expression.

Another line followed

"You always asked me why I was so quiet. The truth is, I was afraid. Afraid that if I spoke too much, my truth would slip out… and I would lose the only person who made my world feel alive."

A tear fell onto the page.

Raihan quickly wiped it away, but more followed.

"Lose me…?" he whispered. "You were already leaving…"

The wind rustled through the leaves above him, as if responding to his broken voice.

He kept reading.

"There is something I never told you, Raihan. Not because I didn't trust you, but because I didn't want your kindness to turn into pity. I didn't want you to stay with me out of sympathy. I wanted your presence to be real… just like your laughter, your care, and the way you looked at the world."

Raihan clenched his fists.

"Neela… how could you think that?" he said softly.

He took a deep breath and turned to the next page.

The writing had changed slightly more hurried, more emotional.

"There were days when I wanted to tell you everything. Especially that evening… when I asked if you would remember me. I was hoping you would understand. But you smiled and said you would find me anywhere."

Raihan closed his eyes tightly.

That moment came rushing back to him—the river, the golden sky, her quiet smile.

"I would find you…" he repeated.

The words now felt heavier than ever.

"I didn't have the courage to tell you the truth that day. Because if I did… I knew it would hurt you. And I couldn't bear the thought of being the reason behind your sadness."

The river's sound seemed louder now, almost like a soft cry echoing through the silence.

Raihan turned another page.

The next line made his breath stop.

"But there is one last thing you must know…"

His fingers froze for a moment.

A strange fear crept into his chest.

"What is it…?" he whispered.

Slowly, he read on

"The girl you met today… she is not a stranger."

Raihan's eyes widened.

His mind raced back to the girl who had handed him the notebook.

Her hesitant voice.

Her knowing smile.

His heartbeat grew faster.

"What do you mean…?" he said under his breath.

The page ended there.

Raihan quickly flipped to the next one

But it was blank.

The wind suddenly grew stronger, flipping a few pages at once.

Empty.

All empty.

"No… no, this can't be it!" Raihan exclaimed.

Panic filled his voice.

He searched through the notebook desperately, but there were no more words.

Only silence.

He looked up at the darkening sky, his chest rising and falling rapidly.

That girl…

Who was she?

And how was she connected to Neela?

The quiet mystery wrapped around him like the cold evening air.

And for the first time since Neela left, Raihan realized

Her story was not over yet.
