Chapter 6 - THE MATING BOND SNAPS

KAEL POV

Kael Nightstorm felt the power activate before the light even exploded.

It came as a ripple through the chamber. A sudden pressure on his mind like invisible hands had gripped his skull. Every warrior around him went rigid. Every Alpha felt it. Even the elders in their ceremonial robes stiffened like puppets with cut strings.

Kael's wolf recognized her immediately.

His entire body went tight. His blood burned. His heart rate tripled. Something deep inside him, something primal and ancient, screamed one word over and over.

Mate.

No. That wasn't possible. He had just met her a few minutes ago. Just glimpsed her in the shadows. Just felt that strange moment of connection that made no sense.

It wasn't possible that his soul recognized her on sight.

But it had.

The light exploded and his wolf tried to tear its way out of his skin.

The mating bond snapped into place with force that stole his breath. It was like being struck by lightning from the inside. Like his entire body was rewiring itself in an instant. Every part of him suddenly knew. Suddenly understood. Suddenly belonged to someone who shouldn't exist.

An Omega with power beyond measure.

Kael's eyes found her across the chamber.

Silver hair. Violet eyes that glowed with the light of the sacred stone. She was terrified and magnificent and absolutely his in a way that transcended law or logic or reason.

She was his mate.

The knowledge burned through him like fire.

His wolf howled inside his chest. The sound came out as a growl that made every warrior in the chamber look at him. But Kael wasn't paying attention to them. He wasn't paying attention to Marcus or the council or the fact that the natural order of their world was shattering.

He was watching the guards move toward her with weapons raised.

Watching death approach the female who was supposed to be his other half.

Kael didn't think.

He didn't calculate odds or consider consequences or worry about what this would mean for his pack. There was no thought. There was only action.

His human form exploded into his wolf form mid-stride.

The transformation was violent and beautiful. Bones restructured. Muscles expanded. Fur erupted across his skin like midnight itself was covering him. His fangs emerged. His eyes remained silver even in wolf form, burning like molten metal.

He moved across the ritual chamber faster than the guards could react.

His massive black wolf form blocked their path to Liora. He stood between her and death with his shoulders tensed and his fur standing on end. Every line of his body was a threat. Every breath was a warning.

The guards hesitated.

They looked at each other. They looked at Marcus for guidance. They looked at the massive predator standing between them and their target.

Kael shifted back to human form.

His voice came out in pure Alpha command. A voice that carried the weight of generations of Shadowpeak lineage. A voice that bent reality just by speaking into it.

I claim her as mate.

The words hung in the air like a curse.

By ancient law no wolf may harm a bonded female without facing an Alpha's challenge. These wolves will answer to me if they touch her. Shadowpeak Pack defends what is ours.

The ritual chamber went completely silent.

He had just violated every protocol of the ceremony. He had just claimed a mate before the ritual was complete. He had just claimed a mate from Silvercrest Pack. He had just claimed a mate who had just demonstrated power that could control every Alpha in this room.

It was insane.

It was suicide.

It was absolutely necessary.

Kael could feel the mating bond anchoring between him and Liora. It was a physical connection now. A tether that went deeper than blood. Deeper than rank. Deeper than any law that had ever been written.

She was his.

His to protect.

His to defend.

His to keep alive no matter what came next.

Marcus's face turned purple with rage.

The Alpha of Silvercrest Pack tried to fight against the power holding him. Kael could see the muscles in Marcus's neck strain with effort. Could see his claws extend as he fought the command that had locked his body in place.

He was breaking free.

Kael recognized the signs. Marcus was powerful enough to fight through her control. Strong enough to override even the ancient magic that held him. The old Alpha was going to attack.

Kael was ready.

Marcus's body convulsed. His human form wanted to shift. His wolf wanted to emerge and fight for dominance. His power was struggling against Liora's command like a trapped animal fighting against chains.

Then Marcus broke free.

Not completely. But enough. Enough to move his arm. Enough to point at Liora with a shaking hand and scream.

Kill her. Kill the abomination. Kill her before she destroys us all.

The guards moved again.

Kael stepped toward them before they could take more than two steps. His voice was deadly quiet. More dangerous than any shout.

Any wolf that takes another step toward her dies by my hand.

The guards stopped.

They weren't brave enough to challenge an Alpha. They weren't stupid enough to think they could fight him. They looked at Marcus again, waiting for another command.

Marcus was already shifting.

His human form dissolved into his wolf form. It was massive. Scarred. Furious beyond reason. He launched himself at Kael with fangs bared and murder in his yellow eyes.

Kael met him head-on.

The impact shook the entire ritual chamber. Two Alpha wolves colliding with full force. Kael's black fur against Marcus's scarred gray. Silver eyes against yellow. The sound of their clash echoed off the stone walls like thunder.

They didn't fight for long.

Kael had spent his entire adult life in combat. He had killed warriors twice his age. He had taken the Alpha title by force. He had learned that fighting was about understanding your opponent's weakness and exploiting it before they could exploit yours.

Marcus was angry.

Anger made you slow. Anger made you predictable. Anger made you vulnerable.

Kael was ice.

He didn't fight with emotion. He fought with precision. He dodged Marcus's attack and struck in the same motion. His fangs found flesh. His claws raked across the older Alpha's shoulder.

Blood spilled across the stone floor.

Marcus retreated slightly, the wound making him hesitate for just a moment. That moment was all Kael needed. He moved in, pressing his advantage, forcing Marcus backward.

The older Alpha wasn't recovering well.

His wounds were more serious than Kael's. His breathing was getting heavier. His movements were slowing down.

But before Kael could end it, someone pulled him back.

Vex. His second-in-command had grabbed him mid-strike and was pulling him away from Marcus. Kael wanted to fight it but he recognized the strategy. Vex was right. Killing the Alpha of a rival pack during a peace ceremony would bring down every Alpha in three territories.

It would be war.

Total war.

Kael shifted back to human form, breathing hard.

The ritual chamber was in chaos. Warriors were choosing sides. Some stood with the Shadowpeak Pack. Some stayed loyal to Marcus. The other Alphas were trying to figure out whose allegiance was safest. Soren was disappearing into the shadows like he had never been here at all.

Marcus was back in human form, bleeding from his shoulder.

His yellow eyes burned with hatred as he looked at Kael. The message was clear. This was not over. This was the beginning of a war that would define both their packs.

Then Marcus looked at Liora.

The look in his eyes made Kael's blood run cold. It wasn't just hatred. It was fear. It was the fear of someone who had recognized a threat that couldn't be controlled. That couldn't be managed. That had to be destroyed.

Marcus opened his mouth and his voice carried across the entire chamber.

The council will decide her fate. The council will vote on whether she lives or dies. And they will vote for execution. They will call her an abomination. They will make her death a law.

The other Alphas were nodding. Kael could see it happening. Could see the fear spreading through the room like a contagion. Could see every Alpha in this chamber coming to the same conclusion Marcus had reached.

An Omega with power was too dangerous to live.

They would vote her death.

They would make it legal.

They would have the entire werewolf hierarchy backing the execution.

Kael's mating bond burned.

He could feel Liora's fear through their connection. Could feel her terror. Could feel her understanding that she had just been born into power only to be sentenced to death in the same moment.

He stepped forward to stand with her.

His hand reached out and took hers even as the ritual chamber erupted into shouting. Even as Alphas started arguing about jurisdiction and law. Even as the world tried to tear them apart.

She gripped his fingers like he was the only solid thing in a shattering world.

Liora looked at him with those violet eyes and he saw the question there. The same question he was asking himself.

What happens now?

Then one of the elders stepped forward.

His name was Soren and he smiled with teeth that showed no kindness.

The trial will happen. The council will gather. Every Alpha will witness. And we will vote on whether this abomination lives or burns.

He turned to look directly at Kael.

And you, Alpha heir of Shadowpeak, will have to choose between your pack and your mate. Because the council will never accept her. The law will never allow her to live. And no amount of love will change the fact that she is a threat to everything we are.

The chamber fell silent.

Kael squeezed Liora's hand and made a choice that would echo through generations.

He would defend her.

Even if it meant war.

Even if it meant his own pack would turn against him.

Even if it meant burning the entire werewolf hierarchy to ash.

He would keep her alive.
