Chapter 1 - Empire of Ash and Glass

Chapter 1: The City That Burned Twice

The first thing Liora noticed about Valecor wasn't the glass.

It was the ash.

It drifted through the air like quiet snowfall, catching in her hair, settling on her shoulders, clinging to the edges of her worn cloak. At first glance, someone might have mistaken it for dust carried in from the outer plains, but Liora knew better. Dust didn't smell like this.

Ash had a memory.

She stood at the edge of the hill overlooking the capital, her boots planted in dry, cracked earth. Below her, the city stretched wide and impossibly tall, its towers gleaming faintly even under a sky choked with smoke...gray clouds. The famous glass spires of Valecor still stood, reflecting what little light remained~ but up close, she could already see the truth.

They were fractured.

Some were shattered halfway up, their jagged edges like broken teeth. Others leaned at impossible angles, as if the city itself had tried to collapse and simply… changed its mind.

"It's smaller than I expected," she said quietly.

Kael snorted beside her. "That's because half of it is gone."

Liora glanced at him. He hadn't changed much since she'd last seen him~ still sharp~eyed, still carrying that same guarded tension in his shoulders, like he expected the world to strike at any moment. But there was something new, too. Something heavier.

"You said it was rebuilt," she said.

"It was." His gaze stayed fixed on the city. "After the first fire."

Liora felt a chill crawl up her spine. "And the second?"

Kael didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

They reached the gates just as the last of the daylight faded.

The outer walls of Valecor were blackened, their once white stone permanently stained by soot and flame. Guards stood at the entrance, their armor dull and scratched, their expressions hollow with routine. One of them raised a hand as Liora and Kael approached.

"State your business."

"Returning citizen," Kael said, his voice flat. "And a guest."

The guard's eyes flicked to Liora, lingering just a moment too long. She resisted the urge to pull her hood lower.

"Name?" he asked.

"Kael Varyn."

Something shifted in the guard's expression~ recognition, maybe. Or suspicion. It was hard to tell.

"And the girl?"

"Liora."

The guard waited, as if expecting more.

Liora met his gaze. "Just Liora."

For a moment, the air felt tight, stretched thin between them. Then the guard exhaled, stepping aside.

"Welcome back," he said, though there was no warmth in it. "Try not to cause trouble."

Kael gave a humorless smile. "That depends on the city."

Inside, Valecor felt… wrong.

It wasn't just the damage~ though there was plenty of that. Entire streets lay half-collapsed, buildings reduced to skeletal frames of charred wood and cracked glass. Fires still smoldered in places, sending thin ribbons of smoke into the air.

But even where the city had been rebuilt, something felt off.

Too quiet.

Too controlled.

People moved quickly, heads down, voices low. No laughter spilled from the taverns. No music drifted through the streets. Even the marketplace...what remained of it felt muted, as if the life had been carefully drained out and replaced with something colder.

"Is it always like this?" Liora whispered.

Kael shook his head. "No. It's worse."

They passed a row of glass towers, their surfaces reflecting distorted versions of the world around them. In one, Liora caught a glimpse of herself...pale, travel-worn, eyes too sharp for someone her age.

For a second, the reflection didn't move the way she did.

She froze.

"Kael," she murmured.

But when she looked again, it was normal. Just her, staring back.

"You coming?" Kael called.

Liora hesitated, then tore her gaze away. "Yeah."

Just your imagination, she told herself.

It didn't feel like it.

They stopped in a narrow alley between two half-rebuilt buildings.

"This is where we part for now," Kael said.

Liora blinked. "What?"

"I've got things to handle," he said. "People who need to know I'm back. It's safer if you stay out of sight until I figure out what's changed."

"Safer for who?" she asked, her voice tightening.

"For you." He met her eyes, and for a moment, the guarded mask slipped. "You don't understand this place yet, Liora. Not anymore."

"Then help me understand."

"I will." He hesitated. "Just… not tonight."

Liora folded her arms. "You said that three years ago."

The words hung between them, heavier than either of them expected.

Kael looked away first.

"I know," he said quietly.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke. Then he reached into his coat and pulled out a small object, pressing it into her hand.

It was a shard of glass ~ smooth on one side, jagged on the other. Even in the dim light, it seemed to glow faintly, as if holding onto something that refused to fade.

"What is this?" she asked.

"A key," Kael said. "Or at least… part of one."

"To what?"

"You'll find out." He stepped back. "Stay in the lower district. Don't trust anyone who wears silver."

Liora frowned. "That's not exactly helpful."

"It's the best I can do right now." He turned, already moving away. "I'll find you tomorrow."

"Kael~"

But he was gone, swallowed by the narrow streets and shifting shadows of the city.

Liora stood alone, the glass shard warm in her palm.

For a moment, she considered going after him.

Instead, she turned in the opposite direction.

If this city had secrets...and it clearly did...she wasn't going to wait around for someone else to decide when she was allowed to learn them.

She stepped back into the street, pulling her hood lower as she moved with the flow of people.

Somewhere above her, high in the glass towers that still stood unbroken, a light flickered.

Then another.

And another.

Liora slowed, her gaze lifting.

The lights weren't random.

They were forming a pattern.

A signal.

Before she could make sense of it, every light in the city went out at once.

Darkness swallowed Valecor whole.

And in that sudden, suffocating black, Liora heard something she knew she wouldn't forget.

A voice.

Soft.

Close.

Right behind her.

"Run."
