Born on a small island that burned to ash one terrible night, he was left with nothing but memories and a torn, half-charred map that points toward the unknown. His single purpose: find the Lost — the greatest treasure in the world — before darkness claims it first.

A colossal sea creature stretching over twenty-five metres from snout to tail, her skin shimmers like hammered silver beneath moonlight. No one knows her true age, though old sailors have whispered her name in their cups for centuries. She is not the monster that frightened men claim she is — she is something rarer: a thinking being who speaks in the language of tides. She chose Joyboi as her companion for reasons she alone carries, carrying him on her back toward the oldest secrets the ocean holds.

A former soldier of the Northern Isle Army, Rebo Ameet comes from a family the history books forgot. He is a severe-featured man with a scar that traces from his left eyebrow to his jaw, and a heavy broad-bladed sword he only draws when he intends to finish things. He joined Joyboi with a simple transaction: help with the voyage in exchange for access to the man who destroyed his village. He speaks rarely. He acts decisively.

A young woman with fire-red hair and almond eyes, she appears younger than she is and is deadlier than she appears. Phil Zenisha is a brilliant inventor and an unrivalled reader of maps — she built a small seaworthy vessel from the wreckage of three broken ships using only her hands and her mind. She possesses a peculiar ability: she hears islands. Every island has a song, she says, and the one who knows the song finds the way. She joined the crew after Joyboi pulled her from slave traders in Smoke Harbour.

Everyone is searching for it. Everyone is willing to kill for it.
