Chapter 1 - UMAR(RA.)

As-salamu alaykum.

Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), known as Al-Farooq ("The One who Distinguishes between Right and Wrong"), was the second Caliph of Islam and one of the most powerful and influential figures in history. His reign (634–644 CE) transformed the Islamic state into a world power.

Early Life and Conversion

Born in Mecca to the Banu Adi clan of the Quraish, Umar was one of the few literate Meccans of his time. He was known for his physical strength, wrestling skills, and fierce defense of Quraish traditions.

Initially a staunch opponent of Islam, his conversion in 616 CE was a turning point. After intending to kill the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), he was moved by the beauty of the Quranic verses he heard at his sister's house. His conversion was so impactful that the Muslims, who had previously prayed in secret, began to pray openly at the Kaaba.

The Caliphate (13 AH – 23 AH)

Umar succeeded Abu Bakr (ra.) and served as Caliph for ten years. His leadership style was characterized by justice, simplicity, and administrative genius.

1. Military Expansions

Under his command, the Islamic empire expanded at an unprecedented rate, defeating the two superpowers of the time:

* The Byzantine Empire: Significant victories led to the conquest of the Levant and Egypt.

* The Sassanid (Persian) Empire: The Battle of Qadisiyyah effectively brought Persian territories under Islamic rule.

* Jerusalem: In 637 CE, Umar personally traveled to Jerusalem to accept its surrender, ensuring the safety of its inhabitants and religious sites.

2. Administrative Reforms

Umar was the true architect of the Islamic state's administration. He established:

* The Hijri Calendar: Setting the migration (Hijrah) as the starting point.

* The Diwan: A system for pensions and social security.

* Judicial System: He appointed independent judges (Qadis) to ensure the law applied to everyone, including himself.

* Public Infrastructure: Building canals, roads, and establishing the first organized police force and postal service.

Character and Legacy

Umar (ra.) was famous for his extreme humility. Despite ruling a massive empire, he wore patched clothes, slept on the floor, and walked the streets at night to ensure no citizen was going hungry.

"If a dog dies hungry on the banks of the Euphrates, I am afraid that Allah will hold me accountable for it." — Umar ibn al-Khattab

Martyrdom

In 644 CE, while leading the Fajr prayer in Medina, Umar was assassinated by Abu Lulu'ah, a Persian slave with a personal grudge. He passed away three days later and was buried next to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and Abu Bakr (ra.).
