KIRA'S POV
She has to tell him.
Kira knows this the way she knows how to kill. It is not a choice anymore. It is necessity. The lie between them is growing. She can feel it through the bond like poison in water. Every second she does not speak makes the connection worse. Makes the pain sharper.
She watches him in the darkness of the cave. He is sitting against the stone wall with his eyes closed. His breathing is steady now but she can feel his mind spinning. He is trying to understand what happened. Trying to make sense of why a dragon would bind him to a stranger.
He is not a stranger.
She knows everything about him now. Every fear. Every desperate thought. Every moment he thought about dying because life was too hard. Through the bond she has learned his entire life and he has learned nothing about hers except what she has already shown him.
That is not fair.
"I need to tell you something," Kira says.
Elric opens his eyes. Through the bond she feels hope flash through him followed immediately by dread. He already suspects. Some part of him knows what is coming.
"About why you were hunting me," he says. Not a question.
"Yes."
"Then tell me."
Kira takes a breath. She has killed hundreds of people and faced death many times. She has never been afraid of anything. But this is different. This confession feels more dangerous than any blade.
"The empress sent me," Kira says. The words come out flat. Clinical. The way she was trained to speak. "When the dragon appeared and the light came up from the tomb, she understood what it meant. The heir was alive. After fifty years of searching, the person she thought she had killed was alive."
She can feel Elric processing this. Can feel the pieces clicking together in his mind.
"So you were trying to kill me."
"Yes."
"Before I even knew what I was. Before I understood what was happening. You were already hunting me."
"Yes."
Elric stands up suddenly and the movement sends pain through both of them. But the pain is small compared to the rage that comes next. His rage. Her rage. Mixed together through the bond until Kira cannot tell where his anger ends and her own begins.
"How many people did you kill for her," he demands. His voice is not loud but it cuts like a blade. "How many people did you murder before you came for me."
"I do not know. I stopped counting."
"Hundreds."
"Yes."
He tries to move away from her. He walks toward the far side of the cave and the pain that comes is instantaneous. It is not the dull ache of the bond anymore. It is white hot agony that makes him scream. He screams and Kira feels it like her own body is breaking apart.
She feels the pain and she also feels his thoughts. Feels him trying to accept that separation means death. Feels him trying to decide if dying alone is better than living connected to his killer.
She reaches for him instinctively but he pulls away even though pulling away makes them both suffer more.
"Do not touch me," he gasps.
"Elric, the pain will stop if we stay close."
"I do not care about the pain. I care that you were sent to put an arrow in my heart and you came very close to doing it."
Kira stands still. She knows this is true. She was trained to never miss. Her arrow would have killed him. He would have fallen dead in that alley by the river and the dragon would have never come.
The world would have been different. The empire would have won. The throne would still belong to the woman who raised Kira and taught her that love is weakness.
"I was following orders," Kira says.
"Orders to kill me."
"Orders to kill you."
She feels his betrayal like it is her own. But it is not her own. It is his. His rage at being hunted. His horror at the casual way she accepted the mission. His fear that even now she might be planning his death.
"Did you even hesitate," he asks. "When she told you to find me and kill me, did you hesitate for even one second."
Kira wants to lie. Wants to tell him that yes, she hesitated. Wants to tell him that something inside her rebelled against the order. But the bond will not let her lie. He feels the truth before the words come out.
She did not hesitate.
"No," she says. "I accepted the order and came hunting you."
Elric tries to walk away again and the pain comes again. This time he does not scream. He just falls to his knees because his legs will not hold him. The separation is torture. Physical. Absolute. Kira feels it through the bond and realizes that the dragon built the pain to be stronger than rage. Stronger than betrayal. Stronger than the desire to escape.
The pain forces them together.
Kira walks toward him slowly. Every step takes effort because she can feel him pulling away. Can feel his desire to hurt her. But she reaches him anyway because the alternative is suffering that neither of them can endure.
She sits down beside him.
"Do not touch me," he says again but his voice is weaker now.
"The pain will stop if you let me sit with you."
"I do not care about the pain."
She sits next to him anyway. Not touching. Just present. Just close enough that the agony eases to manageable levels. She can feel him fighting it. Fighting the need for her presence. Fighting the fact that his enemy is now his only source of relief.
"The empress raised me," Kira says. She does not know why she is telling him this. But through the bond she feels that he needs to understand. Needs to know that she was not born a killer. Was made into one. "She took me when I was six years old. She taught me that feeling is weakness. She taught me that loyalty is the only thing that matters. She made me into what I am."
"A weapon."
"A weapon."
Elric is quiet for a long time. She can feel him deciding things in the darkness. Deciding if understanding her excuses what she did. Deciding if knowing her story changes the fact that she nearly murdered him.
"I cannot forgive you," he says finally.
Kira feels those words like a punch. But she also feels something underneath them. Feels the part of him that wants to. Feels the part of him that already halfway understands because through the bond he has seen inside her. Has seen the girl she was before the fortress broke her.
"I know," Kira says.
"But I cannot separate from you without the pain killing us both."
"I know."
"So we are stuck. Together. Even though you were sent to kill me."
Kira nods. She can feel his desperate need for this to make sense. For there to be some reason that the dragon bound him to his assassin. But there is no good reason. There is only the fact that the dragon chose this binding and now they have to survive it.
"Can you even be trusted," Elric asks. His voice is broken. Desperate. "If the empress called you back right now and ordered you to kill me, would you do it."
Kira does not answer immediately. She searches inside herself for the truth. Searches for the part of her that was absolutely certain of her loyalty just days ago. And she finds it there still. That cold loyalty. That absolute obedience.
But something has changed.
Through the bond she feels Elric waiting for her answer. Feels him holding his breath. Feels him understanding that her answer will determine whether this bond becomes partnership or just shared suffering.
"I do not know," she says finally. It is the most honest answer she has ever given. "I do not know if I can choose differently. I was built for obedience. But I also do not know if I want to obey her anymore."
She feels something shift in him. Not forgiveness. Not trust. But something like the smallest crack in his anger. Something like maybe there is hope that they can find a way forward together.
Even if that way is built on broken ground.
Even if she destroyed his life before the dragon gave them a chance to rebuild it.
"Then we stay close," Elric says finally. "And we see what comes next."
Kira nods.
She sits beside him in the darkness and through the bond she feels his rage slowly cooling into something more complicated. Something that tastes like grief and confusion and the desperate hope that maybe the woman who was sent to kill him might someday become something different.
But whether he can ever truly trust her again is a question that neither of them knows how to answer.
