Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Moon's Cruel Joke

The full moon hung low over Blackwood Pack territory like a silver coin someone had flipped and forgotten to catch. It bathed the central square in cold light, turning every face ghostly, every shadow sharp. Hundreds of us gathered—warriors, elders, pups clinging to their mothers—for the annual Mating Ceremony. The air thrummed with anticipation, thick with the scents of pine, woodsmoke, and nervous excitement.

I stood at the back, half-hidden behind a cluster of beta females, my heart hammering so hard I thought it might crack my ribs. At nineteen, I was late to shift properly—my wolf still a faint, timid whisper inside me. They called me the weakest omega in generations. No claws worth mentioning, no speed, no dominance. Just Elara Voss: quiet, forgettable, always cleaning up after everyone else.

But tonight felt different. My skin prickled, my blood sang. Something feral stirred deep in my chest, like a door creaking open after years of being locked.

Then I smelled him.

Cedar. Storm. Raw power. It slammed into me like a fist, stealing my breath. My wolf—finally—snarled awake, claws scraping at the inside of my mind.

Mate.

The word echoed through every nerve. I pushed forward through the crowd, drawn like a moth to flame. There he was, on the raised platform: Alpha Darius Blackwood. Tall, broad-shouldered, black hair falling in waves to his shoulders, eyes the color of midnight thunder. The pack's ruthless leader, twenty-eight and unmated until now. Whispers said he'd rejected every she-wolf who'd thrown herself at him, waiting for the one the Moon Goddess deemed worthy.

Our eyes locked.

Time stopped.

His nostrils flared. Recognition flashed across his face—then something darker. Disgust? Anger? My stomach twisted.

The pack elder raised his hands for silence. "The Moon Goddess has spoken. Tonight, bonds will be revealed. Step forward, those who feel the pull."

Darius moved first. He descended the steps with predatory grace, every eye on him. He stopped directly in front of me. The crowd parted like water.

I lifted my chin, trying to look stronger than I felt. My wolf howled inside: Claim him. He's ours.

He leaned in, close enough that his breath ghosted my ear. His scent wrapped around me—intoxicating, overwhelming. Heat pooled low in my belly, unbidden. I'd never felt anything like it.

"Elara Voss," he said, voice low, meant only for me at first. Then louder, for the pack. "You are my fated mate."

Gasps rippled through the square. Me? The omega nobody noticed? Paired with the Alpha?

For one shining second, hope bloomed. Maybe this was my moment. Maybe the Moon Goddess hadn't forgotten me.

Then his lip curled.

"I, Darius Blackwood, Alpha of the Blackwood Pack," he declared, voice booming across the night, "reject you, Elara Voss, as my mate and future Luna."

The words hit like silver bullets.

Pain exploded in my chest—sharp, burning, tearing. The mate bond snapped like a rope cut by a blade. My knees buckled. I would have fallen if not for the sudden grip of two warriors hauling me upright.

The pack erupted. Laughter from some. Murmurs of shock from others. A few pitying glances.

"Why?" someone shouted.

Darius turned to face them, calm as death. "She is weak. An omega with no wolf worth fearing. My Luna must be strong—able to lead beside me, to bear heirs who will not falter. This girl…" He glanced back at me, eyes cold. "This girl would drag our pack into ruin."

My vision blurred with tears I refused to let fall. Inside, my wolf thrashed, howling in agony. Fight! Bite! Claim!

But I couldn't. My body felt hollow, the bond's severance leaving me raw.

He wasn't done.

"Furthermore," he continued, gesturing to a tall, elegant she-wolf stepping forward from the side—Serena, his longtime favorite, all sleek red hair and confident smirk—"I have chosen Serena Vale as my chosen mate. She will stand as Luna."

Serena's smile was triumphant. She slid her arm through his, pressing close, her scent mingling with his in a way that made bile rise in my throat.

The elder nodded solemnly. "The Alpha has spoken. The bond is rejected. Elara Voss, you are hereby banished from Blackwood Pack lands. Leave by dawn, or face execution."

Banished.

The word echoed worse than the rejection.

I stared at Darius, searching for any flicker of regret. Nothing. Just cold resolve.

My voice came out small, broken. "You… you felt it too. The pull. The heat. How can you—"

"Enough." He cut me off. "Take her away."

Warriors dragged me toward the edge of the square. I twisted, trying to see him one last time. Serena whispered something in his ear; he laughed—low, cruel.

As they pulled me into the shadows of the trees, the pain shifted. No longer just heartbreak. Something darker uncoiled in my core. My wolf—no longer whispering—growled. Deep. Savage.

Blood trickled from my lip where I'd bitten it. My nails dug into my palms, drawing more.

He thinks he's broken us, my wolf snarled, voice clearer than it had ever been. But he's only set us free.

I stumbled into the forest line, the pack's jeers fading behind me. The moon watched impassively as I collapsed against a tree, chest heaving.

Alone.

Rejected.

Pregnant? No—not yet. But earlier that week, during a rare moment when Darius had cornered me in the pack house (a stolen touch, a fevered kiss before he pulled away), something had sparked. A faint flutter low in my belly now confirmed it. The Moon Goddess's cruel joke: his seed taking root just days before he cast me out.

I pressed a hand to my stomach. A tiny heartbeat answered—strong, defiant.

Tears finally fell, hot and furious.

But beneath the grief, rage kindled. My wolf rose fully for the first time, fur prickling under my skin, eyes glowing amber in the dark.

They laughed at us. Humiliated us. Threw us away like trash.

I pushed to my feet, legs shaking but steadying.

We will not die here.

The forest stretched endless before me—rogue lands, danger, survival.

But also power. Unknown. Waiting.

I took one step. Then another.

Behind me, the pack celebrated their new Luna.

Ahead? Revenge.

And when I returned—stronger, fiercer, with an army of the forgotten at my back—Alpha Darius Blackwood would learn what it truly meant to reject the wrong mate.

He would beg.

And I would decide whether to let him live.

The moon smiled down, as if in approval.
