Chapter 1 - A Fire Leaf

Chapter 1 — The Boy Who Found the Burning Leaf

The forest outside the village of Ember Hollow was not a place where children were supposed to wander.

Everyone in the village knew the old stories.

They said the forest was ancient—older than the kingdoms, older than the roads, perhaps even older than the mountains themselves. The elders claimed strange spirits slept beneath its roots and that sometimes, when the wind moved the branches just right, the trees whispered secrets that humans were never meant to hear.

Most villagers avoided it.

But Kael had never been good at avoiding things.

The sixteen-year-old boy moved quietly between the tall trees, stepping over roots and pushing aside low branches as he walked deeper into the forest. The evening sun filtered through the thick canopy above, scattering golden light across the moss-covered ground.

A basket hung from his shoulder.

Inside were herbs—silver moss, frost berries, and two small bundles of dreamleaf. They were worth enough in the village market to buy dinner for a few days.

Not bad for an afternoon of wandering.

Kael knelt near a fallen log and carefully plucked a cluster of blue mushrooms.

"Perfect," he muttered to himself.

Most people in Ember Hollow worked in the fields or the mines nearby, but Kael preferred the forest. He had spent years exploring its hidden paths, learning which plants were useful and which ones would make a person regret touching them.

Some villagers said he had the instincts of a hunter.

Others said he simply had too much curiosity for his own good.

Kael stood and stretched slightly, glancing at the sky through the leaves.

The light was fading.

He should probably head back before dark.

The forest changed after sunset.

Everyone knew that.

But just as he turned toward the path leading back to the village, something unusual caught his eye.

A glow.

Faint.

Orange.

It flickered briefly behind a group of trees farther ahead.

Kael frowned.

Fire?

There shouldn't be any fire in the forest.

A small spark of excitement stirred in his chest.

Curiosity won immediately.

He stepped off the familiar path and moved toward the strange light.

Branches brushed against his clothes as he pushed deeper between the trees. The glow grew brighter with each step, though it wasn't spreading like a normal fire. It pulsed slowly, like a heartbeat.

That alone made Kael pause.

"Okay… that's strange."

He moved carefully now.

The forest around him had gone quiet.

Too quiet.

Even the insects seemed to have stopped making noise.

Kael pushed past the final cluster of bushes—

—and stepped into a small clearing.

Then he froze.

In the center of the clearing stood a massive ancient tree.

Its trunk was wider than a house, its bark dark and cracked with age. The branches stretched high into the sky like the arms of a giant.

But that wasn't what made Kael stare.

One single leaf hung from the lowest branch.

And it was on fire.

Not burning like normal flame.

It glowed.

The leaf shone with swirling orange and gold light, small tongues of flame moving across its surface without consuming it. Tiny sparks drifted downward like glowing dust before vanishing in the air.

Kael blinked.

"…What?"

He stepped closer, slowly.

The ground beneath the tree was warm.

Not hot enough to burn, but warm like stone sitting under the summer sun.

The glowing leaf swayed gently even though there was no wind.

Kael's heart began beating faster.

Something about the sight made the air feel heavier, like standing near a storm that hadn't arrived yet.

He looked around the clearing.

No animals.

No footprints.

No signs that anyone else had been here.

Just the enormous tree…

…and the burning leaf.

Kael scratched his head.

"Alright… this is definitely not normal."

For a moment he considered leaving.

The elders always warned about strange things in the forest.

But then again—

If something this weird existed, someone would eventually discover it.

And if that someone was him…

Well.

That would make a pretty incredible story.

Kael stepped closer until he was standing directly beneath the branch.

The leaf flickered slightly brighter.

"Okay," he said quietly. "Just looking."

He reached up.

The moment his fingers brushed the leaf—

The world exploded with light.

Flames erupted around the clearing, swirling upward in a spiral of blazing orange energy. The massive tree trembled as glowing symbols ignited across its bark like ancient writing waking from a long sleep.

Kael stumbled backward.

"What the—?!"

The burning leaf detached from the branch.

It floated downward slowly.

The flames surrounding it twisted into the shape of a small blazing spiral before suddenly collapsing inward.

Then—

The leaf landed directly in Kael's hand.

The instant it touched his skin, heat surged through his arm like lightning made of fire.

Kael cried out.

A burning symbol appeared on the back of his hand, glowing bright orange before sinking beneath his skin like molten metal disappearing into water.

Pain shot through his body.

His vision blurred.

The clearing vanished.

Suddenly Kael wasn't standing in the forest anymore.

He stood inside a vast world of endless flames.

Gigantic trees made of fire stretched across the horizon. Rivers of molten light flowed between mountains that burned like living volcanoes. In the sky above, enormous leaves made of blazing energy drifted like falling stars.

A deep voice echoed through the fiery world.

Ancient.

Powerful.

"The Fire Leaf has chosen its bearer."

Kael looked around wildly.

"Who said that?!"

The voice continued.

"The first flame awakens."

The burning symbol on his hand flared brighter.

Memories flooded his mind—visions of warriors cloaked in fire, beasts made of molten stone, kingdoms rising and falling beneath blazing skies.

Then the voice spoke again.

"Survive… and the world shall burn with you."

Everything went dark.

Kael collapsed onto the forest floor.

The clearing returned to normal.

The giant tree stood silently once more.

But the burning leaf was gone.

Several minutes passed before Kael groaned and slowly opened his eyes.

"…Ow."

His entire body felt like he had been thrown down a mountain.

He pushed himself up slightly and looked around the clearing.

Everything was quiet again.

No flames.

No glowing symbols.

No floating leaf.

Kael frowned.

"Did I just… hallucinate?"

Then he noticed something.

The back of his hand.

A small symbol shaped like a leaf was glowing faintly beneath his skin.

Orange.

Like fire trapped under glass.

Kael stared at it.

"…That's new."

Suddenly the symbol pulsed.

A tiny spark jumped from his hand.

The nearby grass instantly burst into flame.

Kael jumped back.

"HEY!"

He frantically stomped on the fire until it went out.

Silence returned again.

Kael looked down at his hand.

Then at the burned patch of grass.

Then back at his hand.

A slow grin spread across his face.

"…Okay."

He flexed his fingers.

The glowing leaf symbol pulsed again.

This time a small flame flickered above his palm.

Kael's grin widened.

"Now this," he whispered, "is interesting."

Far above the forest, hidden beyond the clouds, something ancient opened its eyes.

And far away, in a distant kingdom, a group of robed figures felt the sudden awakening of an impossible power.

One of them whispered in fear.

"The Fire Leaf…"
