Chapter 1 - Effort and Hard Work

Doing a job is good because it helps a person live with dignity. When a person earns money honestly, his honor and character remain safe. Truth and honesty always give respect to a person. But if someone tells lies or cheats others, people cannot respect him.

If a person cannot speak the truth or work honestly, it is better for him to leave that job. It is better to do a small job honestly than to do a big job through lies and dishonesty. A person who is honest, wise and hardworking can never truly become poor.

Many young people think that getting a job is the only way to live. But this idea is not correct. If someone cannot get a job, it does not mean that his life is finished. He can start a small business or do some other honest work and live with dignity.

Stealing, cheating and earning money by dishonest ways bring shame. Money earned in this way does not bring real happiness or respect. Honest work, patience and hard work bring true success in life.

Therefore, you should try to live honestly and work hard. If you have effort and patience, you will not fall in life. Even if you face difficulties at first, success will come in the end.Especially in foreign countries, have you ever seen people feel ashamed to earn money by doing small jobs such as working in hotels or doing manual labor?

A famous scholar once returned from England after gaining a lot of knowledge. When he came back, he continued doing the same kind of work there which I would feel ashamed to do. But why should his dignity be lost? A person who has knowledge and wisdom does not become small by doing work. People respect him and raise him higher.

You must believe that work never lowers a person's dignity. Even if someone is unemployed for some time, the opportunity for work may come at any moment.

Think about it—how were huge buildings, land, and wealth created? Was it not through human hands? Work should not be looked down upon. Look at the strong blows of the blacksmith's hammer, the work of the carpenter, and the labor of farmers.

Many people say that there is no work for them. Whatever they do, they fail. Foolish people say such things. They themselves are responsible for their failure. This despair and frustration are the results of their laziness and lack of effort.

The famous scientist Sir Isaac Newton once went to London with only a few pennies in his pocket. At that time, he did not get any help from anyone. A friend once gave him a pair of shoes, but he refused them because he did not want to depend on others. In front of determination, hard work, and effort, all obstacles melt away like water. The person who is hardworking never truly becomes poor.

If you remain silent and do nothing, you cannot gain success in the world. Work hard, struggle, and learn something. Even a small skill can produce something valuable. What is the use of roaring like a dog or wandering like a lion without doing anything?

You may think that after passing examinations your value is only one coin. But look around—many uneducated people are earning thousands of money every month.

The reason for your sorrow and complaint is your own foolishness. Humans can even grow gold from sand if they try—do you not believe it? You are lazy; you have no determination. You are an unfortunate person without self-confidence.

Whether the work is small or big, do it with your heart and soul. Do not avoid work out of shame or pride. Try to do every task in the best possible way.

Once someone told the famous scientist Michael Faraday that his writing was not good. He paid great attention to this advice. From that day he began practicing writing like school children, and within a short time his handwriting became excellent.Another reason for success is attention and concentration. A gentleman once had some agricultural land. The land did not give him any profit; instead, he was losing money every day. Being disappointed, he finally sold the lands to another person at a very low price.

After a few years, the buyer told the former owner that if he wanted to buy the lands again, he could take them back. He said that within a few years he had been able to earn a lot of money from that land. The former owner was surprised and asked how it was possible, since he himself could not earn even a small profit from the land.

The new owner replied, "I am not careless and lazy like you. I only know that without hard work nothing can be achieved. It is not my habit to sit idle even for a short time."

Once a young man asked Sir Walter Scott for advice. Scott told him, "Do not delay. Whatever you plan to do, start it immediately. If you want to succeed, finish your work on time."

Those who use their time properly succeed in life. Time is more valuable than money. Time builds life and helps people gain knowledge and improve their character. Do not waste time carelessly.

Waste one hour every day and at the end of the year you will see how much time you have lost. But if you work one hour every day, by the end of the year you will see how much work you have completed. Seeing your progress, you yourself will be amazed. If every day you write a few lines and keep practicing, at the end of the year you may produce a beautiful book.

Use your life properly and you will see that it becomes full of achievements. But if you waste your life without work, at the time of death you will feel that your life was nothing but a meaningless play and endless sorrow.

Truthfulness and honesty are the greatest ways to achieve success. If you conduct your work with honesty and sincerity, success is certain. Dishonesty may give profit for a short time, but that profit does not last long. The people who have truly succeeded in business never depended on lies or cheating.

Once a man, unable to bear the shame of his life, committed suicide. Before dying he left a note saying, "This miserable life is unbearable for me." But his death did not awaken sympathy in anyone's heart, because he had lived a dishonest life.

There is no shame in work or business. In the past, the famous Nawab family of Dhaka also became wealthy through business. The founder of this family, Alimullah, was a businessman. The welfare of a nation often comes through business. Those who look down upon business are foolish. The wealth and prosperity of the English nation are largely the result of business. Without business they could not have become so great.

If you buy something, always try to make sure that it is genuine. Never deceive the buyer. Do not cheat an inexperienced customer. At first it may seem that you have suffered a loss, but wait patiently. Let your honesty and good reputation spread. Then the fear of loss will disappear and profit will eventually come to your pocket.

To maintain honesty in business requires many good qualities. A businessman who protects the interests of his customers and preserves his reputation never becomes small or dishonorable. Polite and gentle behavior and a moderate desire for profit will make your business life successful.

The desire of young people to get jobs is wasting their valuable strength. Are farmers, craftsmen, and traders really inferior people? Just because they are uneducated, does it mean they have no place in society? The work you consider small actually contains knowledge, thought, and effort.

An educated person who can do any kind of work gains both respect and money. One should not waste one's abilities by becoming dependent on others.
