Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 — Checkmate

The house was quiet.

Too quiet for a city that never truly slept.

Outside, faint orange streetlights painted thin lines across the living room floor, stretching toward the wooden table where the chessboard rested.

Two players sat across from each other.

Adrian leaned forward in his chair, elbows on the table, eyes locked on the board as if the entire world had been reduced to sixty-four squares.

Black and white.

Order and chaos.

His father sat opposite him, unmoving.

Adrian had always found that unsettling.

No matter how complicated the position became, his father never looked worried. Never rushed. Never hesitated.

Just watched.

Waited.

Like someone who had already seen the ending.

Adrian moved a pawn.

The soft click of wood touching wood echoed in the quiet room.

He exhaled slowly.

This time.

He studied the board again.

Knight. Bishop. Queen.

Every piece mattered.

Every square mattered.

His father once told him that chess wasn't about pieces.

It was about positions.

About forcing the enemy into a place where every move they made only made things worse.

Adrian glanced up.

His father hadn't moved yet.

He simply looked at the board.

Then at Adrian.

Then back at the board.

Silence stretched between them.

Adrian felt his heartbeat in his ears.

He hated that look.

Not because it was cold.

Because it was calm.

Too calm.

Like the man across from him already knew what Adrian was going to do.

Adrian leaned back in his chair.

No. Not this time.

He had studied the board for ten minutes before making that pawn move.

Ten minutes calculating every response.

Every trap.

Every escape.

His father finally moved.

A bishop slid across the board.

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

Right.

That was expected.

He had seen that move coming.

He moved instantly this time.

Knight.

His father's eyebrow lifted slightly.

Adrian almost smiled.

That tiny reaction was rare.

Which meant…

He was getting close.

The game continued.

Move after move.

The room grew quieter with each passing minute.

Somewhere outside, a car passed down the street.

Then silence returned.

Adrian leaned forward again.

The board had changed.

Pieces were gone now.

Exchanges made.

Sacrifices accepted.

And suddenly…

Adrian felt it.

That moment.

The moment every chess player chased.

The moment when the entire board clicked in your mind.

Where every line connected.

Every move revealed itself.

He stared at the board.

Then at his father.

His father stared back.

Neither spoke.

Adrian reached out.

His fingers hovered above the knight.

Then he moved it.

The piece landed beside the king.

A small sound.

But the meaning behind it was enormous.

Check.

His father didn't react immediately.

He studied the board.

Adrian watched his eyes move across the pieces.

Left.

Right.

Center.

Then back to Adrian.

Three seconds passed.

Five.

Ten.

His father leaned back slightly.

Then he smiled.

Just a little.

Adrian blinked.

That… never happened.

His father reached forward.

Not to move.

But to gently tap the board beside the king.

Adrian looked down.

Then he saw it.

The pattern.

The line.

His queen.

His rook.

His knight.

Everything locked together.

The king had nowhere to go.

Nowhere at all.

Adrian's breath caught in his throat.

His voice stayed trapped inside him.

But in his mind the words exploded.

Checkmate.

He had done it.

For the first time in his life.

He had beaten his father.

Adrian slowly leaned back in his chair.

His chest rose and fell.

The world felt strangely lighter.

Across the table, his father looked at the board one last time.

Then nodded once.

Not disappointed.

Not surprised.

Just… acknowledging the result.

Adrian looked back at the chessboard.

At the trapped king.

He didn't say anything.

But inside his mind a quiet thought formed.

I finally won.

And then—

CRASH.

Glass exploded inward.

The window shattered.

Adrian jerked his head toward the sound just as two dark figures dropped into the room.

Black clothing.

Masks.

Silent.

For half a second Adrian's brain refused to understand what he was seeing.

Then instinct screamed.

Run.

His chair scraped loudly against the floor as he stood.

Across from him, his father moved.

Fast.

Faster than Adrian had ever seen.

The table flipped sideways as his father kicked it aside, sending chess pieces scattering across the floor.

One of the masked figures lunged forward.

A blade flashed.

Metal collided with metal.

Adrian froze.

His father had caught the strike with something in his hand.

A knife.

He moved with terrifying precision.

Not wild.

Not panicked.

Controlled.

Every movement short and efficient.

One step.

One strike.

The first attacker staggered backward.

The second moved in immediately.

Their coordination was perfect.

Professional.

Adrian's heart pounded.

What the hell is happening?

The fight lasted seconds.

Maybe less.

But to Adrian it felt stretched.

Slow.

The attackers were strong.

Very strong.

His father moved again.

A kick.

A slash.

A block.

Then—

A blade cut across his shoulder.

Blood appeared instantly.

Adrian took a step forward without realizing.

No—

Another strike.

His father turned.

Too late.

The second attacker's blade drove forward.

Adrian saw it happen.

Saw the moment.

Saw the steel enter.

His father staggered.

For the first time that night.

Adrian's stomach twisted.

Move.

His brain screamed at him.

Move.

But his legs didn't listen.

The attackers turned.

Both of them now looking directly at him.

Adrian felt something cold settle in his chest.

Not fear exactly.

Something heavier.

Final.

The first attacker stepped toward him.

Slow.

Careful.

Adrian's thoughts raced.

Run.

Grab something.

Fight.

None of it mattered.

He already knew.

Even without understanding why.

This wasn't random.

This wasn't a robbery.

They had come here for a reason.

And that reason was standing in the middle of the room.

Him.

The attacker raised the blade.

Adrian stared at it.

His mind moved strangely calmly now.

So this is how it ends.

His eyes drifted toward the chessboard pieces scattered across the floor.

The black king lay on its side.

He had beaten his father for the first time.

And now—

The blade moved.

Cold.

Fast.

Pain exploded through his chest.

Adrian's body collapsed backward.

The ceiling lights blurred.

Sound faded.

Somewhere in the distance he heard something fall.

Maybe his father.

Maybe himself.

Everything went dark.

His last thought flickered weakly.

That was… fast.

Then nothing.

Silence.

Endless.

Heavy.

Time didn't exist here.

No light.

No sound.

No pain.

Just darkness.

And then—

A faint glow.

A thin line of pale blue light appeared in the void.

Words slowly formed within it.

Cold.

Mechanical.

Unfamiliar.

[Judgment System Activated]

The light flickered once.

Then vanished.

And Adrian new life began.
