Chapter 1 - 1 The Tide That Took Everything

The ocean was never truly silent.

Even on calm days, it whispered beneath the wind, its endless waves breathing slowly against the horizon. Sailors who had spent years at sea often said the ocean had a voice of its own.

But tonight, it was not whispering.

It was roaring.

Dark clouds swallowed the sky as a violent storm raged across the endless sea. Massive waves rose like towering walls, crashing against a struggling wooden ship that fought desperately to remain afloat. The wind screamed through the sails, tearing at the ropes and rattling every plank of the vessel.

Lightning flashed across the sky, illuminating the raging ocean for brief, terrifying moments.

At the front of the ship stood a boy.

He was only ten years old.

Rain soaked his dark cloak as the violent wind whipped his messy black hair across his face. Despite the chaos surrounding him, the boy stood completely still, his calm eyes staring into the darkness of the ocean.

His name was Thalren Veyr.

And this night would change his life forever.

Around his neck hung a strange necklace.

A small black crystal shaped like a scale rested against his chest. The crystal emitted a faint glow, barely visible beneath the flashes of lightning.

Thalren tightened his grip on the wooden railing of the ship.

Something felt wrong.

The storm itself was not what troubled him. Storms were common in the open sea. Sailors faced them often.

No.

This feeling was different.

It was as if the ocean itself was watching.

"Thalren!"

A strong voice cut through the storm.

The boy turned.

A tall man walked toward him across the shaking deck. His coat was soaked by rain, and his dark hair was pulled back loosely behind his head. His sharp eyes scanned the violent ocean with deep concern.

This man was Captain Aleron Veyr.

Thalren's father.

He placed a firm hand on the boy's shoulder.

"You shouldn't be out here," Aleron said, his voice calm but serious. "Go inside the cabin."

Thalren slowly shook his head.

"The ocean feels strange tonight."

For a moment, the captain did not reply.

His gaze shifted toward the dark water beyond the ship.

He felt it too.

A heavy pressure hung in the air, deep and ancient, like something enormous moving beneath the sea.

The captain's expression darkened.

Before he could speak again, the entire ship suddenly trembled.

Wood creaked loudly beneath their feet as frightened shouts echoed across the deck.

"Captain!" one sailor yelled. "Something hit the hull!"

Another voice shouted from the opposite side of the ship.

"There's movement in the water!"

A massive wave slammed against the side of the vessel, sending cold ocean water crashing across the deck.

Thalren gripped the railing tightly as the ship rocked violently.

Lightning flashed across the sky.

For a single moment, the ocean below was illuminated.

And Thalren saw it.

Something enormous moved beneath the water.

A shadow far larger than the ship itself glided through the dark sea.

The boy's breath caught in his throat.

"Father…"

Captain Aleron's eyes narrowed.

He had feared this.

Slowly, he knelt in front of his son.

"Listen to me carefully, Thalren."

He lifted the necklace gently, holding the glowing crystal between his fingers.

"This is not just a necklace," he said quietly.

Thalren looked at him in confusion.

Before the captain could explain further, the ocean suddenly erupted.

Water exploded upward as a monstrous creature burst from the depths.

The ship shook violently as terrified sailors scrambled across the deck.

The creature was enormous.

Its massive body twisted through the storm waves like a living mountain of scales and muscle. Rows of jagged teeth filled its enormous jaws, and its glowing golden eyes burned with ancient fury.

It was a Sea Beast.

A creature that sailors spoke about only in legends.

But the monster before them was far larger than any legend.

The ocean churned violently as the creature circled the ship.

Captain Aleron slowly stood up.

All hesitation disappeared from his expression.

Only determination remained.

He looked down at Thalren.

"Stay here."

Before the boy could protest, the captain stepped forward and leapt from the ship.

Thalren's eyes widened in shock.

His father landed directly on the raging ocean waves.

Yet instead of sinking beneath the water, he stood upon it.

The sea surged violently beneath his feet as if responding to his presence.

The captain raised his hand.

The ocean rose with him.

A towering wall of water surged upward and crashed into the monstrous creature with tremendous force.

The Sea Beast roared as waves slammed against its massive body.

The battle that followed looked almost unreal.

Lightning flashed across the sky while waves exploded around them. The captain moved across the water like a living storm, striking the creature again and again.

For a brief moment, it seemed possible.

It looked as if he might defeat the monster.

Then something changed.

The creature's glowing eyes suddenly shifted.

They were no longer focused on the captain.

They were staring at the ship.

At Thalren.

The boy felt a cold chill run down his spine.

The Sea Beast dove beneath the ocean.

Captain Aleron's eyes widened.

"No!"

He turned toward the ship immediately.

But he was too late.

The ocean erupted beneath the vessel.

The wooden hull shattered as the enormous creature burst upward from below.

The ship broke apart instantly.

Sailors were thrown into the storming sea as pieces of the vessel scattered across the waves.

Thalren felt himself falling.

Cold water swallowed him as he sank beneath the surface.

Darkness surrounded him.

His lungs burned as he struggled to breathe.

Above him, the storm faded into distant echoes.

Then the necklace began to glow.

The black crystal pulsed with a strange, powerful light.

The water around him seemed to shift.

Far below the ocean's depths, something ancient stirred.

Something opened its eyes.

And somehow, it was watching him.

Thalren's vision slowly faded.

The last thing he saw was the faint glow of the crystal around his neck.

Then everything went dark.

When Thalren finally opened his eyes again, warm sunlight touched his face.

The storm was gone.

Gentle waves rolled peacefully against a quiet beach.

The boy slowly sat up in the sand, staring out at the endless ocean.

The sea had taken everything from him.

But deep within those waters, the truth still remained.

And one day, Thalren Veyr would return to claim it.
