The first thing Chloe learned about New York was that it did not care about you.
This was not a cruel discovery — it was, in its own way, a relief. A city of eight million people, each one furiously absorbed in the business of their own survival, had no particular interest in scrutinising a young woman who had recently died and come back as a different person on the inside. Nobody on the subway platform gave her a second look. Nobody in the shelter intake line asked probing philosophical questions. The city simply processed her — another face, another body, another person with nowhere obvious to be — and moved on.
Chloe appreciated this greatly.
She had spent the first two days getting her bearings in the most literal sense — learning the geography of Chloe Morales' world, such as it was. The shelter on 143rd. The food bank that opened at seven. The library branch where you could sit in warmth for hours without anyone bothering you, provided you looked like you were doing something. She used the library computer to research, methodically, what a person in her position actually needed: ID, documentation, work, housing, in roughly that order and each one dependent on the last in a knot that the system seemed to have designed specifically to be impossible.
She was not discouraged. She was a data entry specialist. She understood complicated systems. She simply had to find the inefficiencies and exploit them.
The inefficiency, as it turned out, was a laminated sign in the window of a discount goods store on a noisy commercial strip in the Bronx, hand-written in enthusiastic capital letters:
HELP WANTED — NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY — ASK INSIDE
The store was called Lucky Mart. It sold a rotating inventory of discounted household goods, seasonal decorations, and snack items in bulk quantities. It smelled of plastic packaging and floor cleaner and something vaguely artificial that Chloe could never quite identify. The owner was a compact, efficient man named Mr. Patel who conducted the entire interview in four minutes and hired her in the fifth, on the condition that she understood the full scope of the position.
"You will be Lucky," he said.
Chloe blinked. "I'm sorry?"
"Lucky." He produced, from behind the counter, a chicken costume. It was not a sophisticated costume — it was the kind of foam-and-felt construction that suggested someone had Googled 'chicken costume' and then made a series of compromises. It was yellow. It had a large orange beak that sat above the wearer's actual face like an architectural misunderstanding. Its eyes were fixed in an expression of deranged optimism. "Lucky is our mascot. You will wear Lucky and stand outside and wave at people and sometimes hold this sign." He produced a sign that read LUCKY MART — LUCKY PRICES EVERY DAY!! with an illustration of a chicken that bore only passing resemblance to the costume.
Chloe looked at the costume for a long time.
In her previous life, Daniel Wright had once attended a mandatory corporate team-building event in which he had been asked to do an improvised presentation while wearing a novelty hat. He had found this profoundly undignified. He thought about that now and felt, distantly, that it had been excellent preparation.
"You said there was a living space?" she said.
"Back room. Small. But it has a bed and a hotplate and its own bathroom. Rent comes out of pay — very reasonable. Previous tenant just moved out." He named a number that was, by New York standards, essentially theoretical — the kind of rent that existed only in the distant past or in the very specific economics of sleeping behind a discount goods store in the Bronx.
Chloe thought about the shelter. She thought about the cold. She thought about the twelve steps between having nothing and having something, and how most people never got past step three because step one was already exhausting.
She picked up the costume.
"When do I start?" she said.
The days settled into a rhythm that was unglamorous in the extreme and quietly, stubbornly satisfying.
She was up at seven. She cleaned the small back room, which had come furnished with a cot, a hotplate, a plastic folding table, and a level of prior-occupant energy she was steadily neutralising with dedication and dollar-store cleaning products. She ate breakfast — something simple, something warm — and was out front in the Lucky costume by nine, waving at the morning commuters with the fixed grin of a chicken who had made peace with her circumstances.
The costume was hot in a way that defied the November cold entirely. Within twenty minutes of wearing it she was sweating. Within an hour she had developed a theory that it was, in fact, some kind of sensory deprivation experiment. But she waved. She held the sign. She pointed enthusiastically at the entrance when people walked by, and occasionally someone laughed, and occasionally someone actually came in, and Mr. Patel seemed satisfied.
She was diligent about it. She had decided, somewhere in the library on day two, that she was going to be diligent about everything — every small task, every minor obligation — because diligence was the only currency she currently had, and she intended to spend it carefully and accumulate more.
Chloe Morales' memories had told her that the original owner of this body had never had the luxury of thinking long-term. Survival had always been too immediate, too consuming. Every day a fire to put out. Every resource gone before it could compound into something.
Daniel Wright, for all his unremarkable years, had understood compound interest. He understood that small consistent inputs produced outsized outputs over time, and he intended to apply this principle to the project of rebuilding a life from negative equity.
So she waved the sign. She swept the stockroom without being asked. She learned the inventory. She showed up early and stayed late when it was useful. Mr. Patel, a man not given to effusive praise, told her on her fifth day that she was "much better than the last one" and gave her an extra hour's pay, which she received as though it were a significant commendation.
It was, in the economy of her current life, exactly that.
She had just pulled the chicken head off — that specific, glorious moment at the end of each shift when cooler air hit her face like a small mercy — when they appeared.
Two of them. Men, neither young nor old, occupying that particular category of person who seemed to exist slightly outside the normal flow of street life — present everywhere, accountable to nothing. She didn't recognise their faces but Chloe Morales' memory recognised something else about them: a posture, a manner, the specific way they positioned themselves to be casually unavoidable.
"Chloe." The taller one said it like he owned the name.
She looked at him with the chicken head under her arm and said nothing.
"You look good." He glanced at his companion with a small smile that communicated nothing good. "Cleaned yourself up."
"I'm working," she said.
"Yeah, we see that." He took a slow step closer. "Listen, we've got something new. Came in last week. Much cleaner than what you were on before — smoother, you know? Better quality. First one's — "
"No."
He paused, recalibrating. People in his business did not often get clean, direct refusals from Chloe Morales. The original Chloe Morales had not, historically, had the resources to refuse.
"Come on, just — "
"I'm going to need you to leave," Chloe said. Her voice was even. She had the tone of someone reading terms and conditions aloud — not angry, not afraid, simply factual. "I'm not interested. I'm not going to be interested. And if you're still standing here in thirty seconds I'm going to go inside and call the police, at which point this becomes a much more complicated Tuesday for you than it needs to be."
A beat of silence.
The shorter one made a face. The taller one looked at her with an expression that moved through several stages — surprise, reassessment, something approaching irritation — before settling on a studied indifference.
"Your loss," he said.
"Probably not," she said.
They left. Not quickly — they were too experienced to leave quickly, too committed to the performance of not being affected — but they left. She watched them go until they turned the corner, then stood there for a moment in the thin afternoon light, the chicken head still tucked under her arm, before going back inside.
Mr. Patel looked up from behind the counter.
"Everything okay?"
"Fine," she said. "Just some people I used to know."
He looked at her for a moment with the careful neutrality of a man who had been operating a business in this neighbourhood for fifteen years and had learned which questions not to ask.
"Okay," he said, and went back to his inventory sheet.
Liam Chistwood had been working part-time at Lucky Mart for seven months when Chloe arrived, and within approximately forty-eight hours of her arrival he had developed a problem.
The problem was her.
He was twenty-four, a communications student at a community college, affable in the easy manner of someone who had grown up with enough warmth to trust the world a little. He had a good face — open, honest, the kind of face that made people instinctively like him before he'd said anything — and a slightly excessive confidence in his own charm that had, to be fair to him, historically been justified.
It was not especially justified with Chloe.
"Okay, hear me out," he said one afternoon, appearing beside her in the stockroom where she was reorganising the canned goods with unnecessary thoroughness.
"I'm hearing," she said, without stopping.
"There's a diner two blocks over. Good coffee, decent pie. I'm going after shift. You should come."
"I have things to do."
"What things?"
She paused, considered, and said: "Reorganising."
He looked at the already extremely organised shelves. "The cans are alphabetical."
"They weren't before."
Liam leaned against the shelving unit with the patient air of a man playing a long game. "Chloe. I'm asking you to get coffee. It's coffee."
She looked at him. He was, objectively, a pleasant person. She had nothing against him personally. The problem was not Liam Chistwood.
The problem was that somewhere in the architecture of her brain — in the wiring that was still, in some fundamental and unresolved way, Daniel Wright's — the concept of going on a date with a man produced a reaction that she could only describe as an error message. Not revulsion, not hostility. Just a profound, slightly bewildered wrongness, like trying to run software on incompatible hardware.
She was aware this was something she would need to think about eventually. The relationship between the body she was living in, the person she had been, and the person she was becoming was not a question with a quick answer. But eventually was not today, and today she had cans to alphabetise.
"I appreciate it," she said, and meant it, which seemed to make it worse somehow. "But not right now."
Liam looked at her with the expression of a man filing information away for future attempts rather than accepting a no. "Not right now," he repeated. "So theoretically, right now is just the obstacle."
"Liam."
"Yeah?"
"The soup cans go before the tomatoes."
He looked at the shelf. "That's not alphabetical. Soup starts with S."
"It's by category."
"You said it was alphabetical."
"Within category," she said. "It's a hybrid system."
He stared at her for a moment, then laughed — a genuine, helpless laugh that bounced off the stockroom walls — and pushed off from the shelf.
"Okay," he said. "I'll see you tomorrow, Chloe."
"See you tomorrow," she said.
She listened to his footsteps retreating toward the front of the store, then turned back to the shelves, and stood there for a moment in the quiet, thinking about nothing in particular, which was to say thinking about everything at once.
She was twenty-three years old. She was sleeping behind a discount goods store in the Bronx. She was wearing a chicken costume for a living and being asked out by a nice boy and being approached by drug dealers and reorganising soup cans by a hybrid alphabetical-categorical system of her own invention.
Somewhere between here and wherever she was going, there was a life worth having.
She was certain of it.
She just needed more time.
She straightened the last can, turned off the stockroom light, and went back to her room.
