Chapter 22 - Party

The weekend finally arrived, and Riverview Academy's courtyard was transformed into a scene of chaos, color, and excitement. Streamers swayed in the gentle breeze, music pulsed lightly from speakers, and laughter echoed across the school grounds. It was the annual student council party and picnic a chance for everyone to relax, mingle, and show off a little.

Chelsea adjusted her bag nervously as she stepped through the gates. She had dressed smartly but simply a navy-blue dress that hugged her figure just enough to make her feel confident without drawing too much attention. She hated to admit it, but part of her felt exposed in front of Vanessa and her entourage.

Vanessa, of course, had arrived earlier, golden hair bouncing, designer sunglasses perched on her nose. Her gang surrounded her like a living shield, whispering, laughing, and making sure everyone noticed their "queen."

Chelsea's jaw tightened. Of course she would come early.

Adrian appeared at the edge of the courtyard, leaning casually against a tree, dark skin glowing under the afternoon sun. His white shirt clung lightly to his muscles, perfectly untucked in that infuriatingly charming way, and his eyes immediately found Chelsea.

That smirk the one that could make a girl both angry and… weak in the knees appeared.

Chelsea groaned silently. I hate him. I hate him. I hate him… maybe not enough.

Vanessa wasted no time. She strutted over to Adrian, hips swaying confidently, hair catching the light like a halo of gold. "Hey," she said, voice smooth and calculated. "I thought I'd find you here."

Adrian glanced at her briefly, smirk widening. "You did," he said easily. Then his gaze flicked toward Chelsea. "…But I see someone else caught my attention first."

Chelsea froze. Did he just…? He had acknowledged her in front of Vanessa?

Vanessa's eyes narrowed, and Chelsea felt a spike of satisfaction, but it was quickly mixed with dread Vanessa would not let this slide.

The afternoon became a battlefield of subtle social warfare.

Vanessa tried every trick in her book: leaning close to Adrian when Chelsea passed by, laughing at his jokes before Chelsea could even open her mouth, whispering compliments in his ear, and using her entourage to create little whispers and glances at Chelsea.

Chelsea, however, remained composed. She didn't have a gang. She didn't have wealth. But she had something Vanessa didn't: brains, confidence, and Adrian's slowly growing interest. Every time Vanessa attempted to shine in front of him, Chelsea countered with small gestures a witty remark, a smile that wasn't lost on Adrian, a calm but piercing glance.

And Adrian noticed everything.

He walked beside Chelsea at one point, lightly brushing her shoulder as he handed her a bottle of water. "You handled her well," he murmured, voice low enough for only her to hear.

"I didn't do anything," Chelsea said quickly, heart racing.

"You did," he said, smirking. "And she noticed. That's what counts."

By evening, the picnic games began. Chelsea found herself paired with Adrian for the three-legged race, and of course, Vanessa was paired with one of her followers.

The race started, and Chelsea could feel Adrian's leg bumping hers as they tried to coordinate. Every brush of skin, every shared step, made her chest tighten.

"You're heavier than I expected," she whispered, glaring at him playfully.

"Good," he said softly, leaning closer. "Keeps me on my toes."

Chelsea's face heated, but she couldn't help laughing, trying not to stumble over her own words or her own feet. Vanessa glared from across the field, clearly frustrated that Chelsea's intelligence, coordination, and Adrian's attention made her own efforts seem hollow.

Later, when everyone gathered to eat, Vanessa tried another tactic flirty whispers, a touch on Adrian's arm, exaggerated laughs. Chelsea noticed but stayed calm. She was smarter than this. She focused on pouring drinks for everyone, setting up snacks, making herself necessary and noticed in a quiet but effective way.

Adrian kept close, dark eyes flicking between Vanessa and Chelsea, a smirk playing on his lips. Every time Vanessa leaned in, he would just shift slightly toward Chelsea, subtly showing where his interest lay. The tension was delicious.

As the party wound down, the crowd thinned, leaving only a few students lingering. Chelsea and Adrian walked together toward the quiet garden behind the courtyard, where lanterns cast soft light over the flowers.

"You handled Vanessa well," Adrian said, voice low, almost intimate. "She's… persistent."

"She's annoying," Chelsea muttered, though her voice softened when she noticed him looking at her. "And rich. And… very full of herself."

He chuckled, leaning slightly closer, letting his shoulder brush hers. "I like that about you," he murmured.

Chelsea froze. "…Excuse me?"

"I like that you don't need a gang. You don't need to flaunt wealth or status. You just… are."

Her heart stuttered. She hated that she was affected, but the words made her chest warm. For a moment, the teasing, the rivalry, the school chaos all of it faded. It was just the two of them, standing in the garden, hearts racing in the quiet.

And she realized, with both fear and anticipation: this was only the beginning.
