Chapter 3 - Chapter 8 – The Monster Beneath the Forest

The forest went silent.

Not the quiet kind of silence that came with snowfall or a peaceful night.

This was different.

Heavy.

Pressing.

Like the entire world had stopped breathing.

Liam felt it immediately.

The air itself seemed thicker, harder to inhale, as if something enormous had just shifted beneath the earth.

Aria grabbed his arm.

"We need to move," she whispered urgently.

But Liam didn't move.

He was staring at the creatures at the edge of the clearing.

The Echoes.

Only moments ago they had been ready to attack. Their twisted bodies had been poised to leap, their glowing blue eyes locked onto Aria like predators scenting blood.

Now they were completely still.

Frozen.

Not in fear.

In submission.

Liam noticed something else.

They weren't looking at him.

They weren't even looking at Aria.

They were looking down.

At the ground beneath their feet.

Another tremor rolled through the forest.

The snow on the branches trembled and fell softly to the ground.

Liam swallowed.

"Okay," he said quietly. "That's not good."

Aria's grip tightened on his sleeve.

Her face had gone pale.

"He's waking up."

Liam slowly turned toward her.

"I'm sorry," he said. "Did you just say he?"

Aria didn't answer right away.

Her glowing eye was scanning the forest, watching every shadow between the trees.

Then she whispered one word.

"The Keeper."

A deep sound echoed beneath the earth.

Not a roar.

Not a growl.

Something much older.

Like stone grinding against stone.

The ground trembled again.

Cracks formed in the snow-covered clearing.

Thin at first.

Then spreading.

Liam stepped back instinctively.

"Oh no," he muttered. "I have a very bad feeling about this."

Aria looked at the pendant around her neck.

"I shouldn't have opened it."

"You think?" Liam said.

The cracks in the ground widened.

Snow collapsed into them.

Something beneath the earth shifted again.

And then—

The first Echo screamed.

Not in rage.

In terror.

The tall gray creature suddenly turned and fled into the forest.

Then another.

Then another.

Within seconds, all of them were gone, vanishing into the dark trees like shadows fleeing the sunrise.

Liam blinked.

"...Well that's new."

Aria didn't relax.

She looked more frightened than before.

"They're running," Liam said.

"Yes."

"That seems like a good thing."

Aria shook her head slowly.

"They don't run from hunters."

Another crack split across the clearing.

A deep rumble followed.

"They run from him."

The ground erupted.

Liam stumbled backward as the earth burst open in the center of the clearing.

Snow and dirt exploded into the air.

Something massive was pushing its way upward from the depths.

Liam's voice came out as a whisper.

"Oh my god."

A gigantic hand broke through the ground.

Not human.

Not even close.

It was made of something that looked like dark stone fused with bone. Long clawed fingers dug into the frozen soil as the creature pulled itself upward.

Another hand followed.

Then a massive shoulder.

The earth continued to collapse around it as the creature slowly rose from beneath the forest.

Liam couldn't even comprehend the size of it.

Thirty feet tall at least.

Maybe more.

Its body looked ancient, as if it had been carved from black rock and left buried for centuries. Veins of glowing blue light pulsed faintly across its surface like cracks in ice.

And its eyes—

They opened slowly.

Two enormous eyes glowing the same blue as Aria's.

Liam felt his knees weaken.

"Okay," he whispered.

"That is definitely the worst thing we've seen tonight."

Aria stepped forward.

Liam grabbed her arm.

"Wait. Hold on. Before we do something incredibly stupid—"

But Aria pulled away.

Her glowing eye met the giant creature's gaze.

For a moment, nothing happened.

The massive being studied her.

Its head tilted slightly.

Then it spoke.

The voice was deep and ancient, like thunder rolling through stone caverns.

"...Veilborn."

The single word echoed across the forest.

Liam stared.

"It talks?"

Aria swallowed.

"Yes."

The giant slowly pushed itself fully out of the broken earth.

The ground trembled under its weight.

"...You carry the Source."

Aria nodded slowly.

"Yes."

The creature leaned closer.

Even kneeling, its face towered above them.

Its glowing eyes focused on her pendant.

"...Why did you wake me?"

Aria hesitated.

"I didn't mean to."

The Keeper was silent for a long moment.

Then it turned its massive gaze toward Liam.

Liam froze.

"Oh great," he muttered.

The creature studied him carefully.

"...Human."

"Yes," Liam said quickly. "Very human."

"...Yet you see."

Liam blinked.

"I… what?"

The creature's eyes narrowed slightly.

"...You have touched the Veil."

Aria looked at Liam sharply.

"What does that mean?"

Liam raised his hands defensively.

"Hey, don't ask me!"

The Keeper looked between them.

"...The Veil stirs."

The forest seemed to darken around them.

"...The hunters return."

Aria's expression hardened.

"They've already found me."

"...Yes."

The creature's glowing eyes dimmed slightly.

"...And they will come for the Source."

Liam crossed his arms.

"They already tried that."

The Keeper's gaze shifted back to Aria.

"...You should not have come here."

Aria looked around the shattered clearing.

"I didn't choose this place."

"...But the Veil did."

The ground rumbled again.

Liam shifted nervously.

"Is it just me," he said, "or does everything in this story keep getting worse?"

The Keeper slowly stood to its full height.

Now Liam could truly see how enormous it was.

Its head rose above the trees.

"...The forest remembers."

Aria frowned.

"What do you mean?"

The Keeper pointed one massive clawed finger toward the deeper woods.

"...You spilled blood here."

Liam felt a chill.

He remembered the vision.

The body in the snow.

Aria standing over it.

Aria's face tightened.

"That was three years ago."

"...The Veil does not forget."

The giant turned its gaze back toward her pendant.

"...You carry power that should never walk freely."

Liam stepped forward slightly.

"Hey," he said. "She's not exactly enjoying this situation either."

The Keeper ignored him.

"...If the hunters take the Source..."

Its voice darkened.

"...the Veil will break."

Aria looked confused.

"What does that mean?"

The creature's glowing eyes burned brighter.

"...It means the Echoes will no longer be the only monsters."

A cold wind swept through the forest.

Liam rubbed the back of his neck.

"That's… very concerning."

Aria stepped closer to the giant.

"Then help us."

The Keeper stared down at her.

"...I cannot leave this forest."

"Why not?"

"...I am its prison."

Liam frowned.

"Prison?"

The giant slowly looked down at the broken ground where it had emerged.

"...Something sleeps deeper than I do."

Liam and Aria exchanged looks.

"Oh come on," Liam groaned. "There's another one?"

The Keeper said nothing.

That silence was answer enough.

Then suddenly—

A distant sound echoed through the forest.

Engines.

Aria turned sharply.

Headlights flickered faintly between the trees.

Liam cursed.

"Let me guess."

"The hunters?"

Aria nodded.

"They followed the energy from the pendant."

The Keeper's eyes dimmed slightly.

"...They are close."

Aria looked up at the giant.

"Then help us before they get here."

The Keeper studied her carefully.

"...Why should I?"

Aria held up the pendant.

"Because if they take this..."

"...they'll control everything you were created to protect."

The giant was silent for a long moment.

Then its glowing eyes softened slightly.

"...Very well."

Liam blinked.

"Wait—really?"

The Keeper knelt again.

"...I will guide you through the forest."

Aria looked relieved.

But the creature added something else.

"...But know this, Veilborn."

Its voice dropped lower.

"...The power inside you is waking."

Aria's glowing eye flickered.

"...And when it fully awakens..."

The giant looked toward the dark horizon.

"...Even I may not be able to stop you."

Liam sighed.

"Fantastic."

More lights appeared between the trees.

The hunters were coming.

Fast.

Aria looked at Liam.

"Ready to run again?"

Liam adjusted his camera bag.

"Honestly?"

He gave a nervous smile.

"I think running is our thing now."

The Keeper turned and began walking into the forest, each step shaking the ground.

Aria and Liam followed.

Behind them, the clearing they had stood in slowly collapsed back into silence.

But deep beneath the earth—

Something else stirred.

And this time…

Even the Keeper felt it.
