Chapter 26 - Chapter 25 - The Gathering

Age 24 — Neutral Zone — Gu Clan Compound — Day One

Three days.

Gu Chen counted them.

The first day passed in preparation. Robes were cleaned. Weapons sharpened. Plans discussed and discarded.

Gu Lian moved through the compound like a ghost, checking everything, speaking to everyone. Gu Mei stayed close to Gu Chen, watching the others watch him.

"You're the center of attention," she said quietly.

Gu Chen looked around. Warriors, servants, messengers — all of them glanced at him when they thought he wasn't looking.

The Soldier: They're measuring.

The King: They're reporting.

The Beggar: They're waiting.

The Monk: For what?

Gu Chen did not know.

---

Day Two — Morning

A messenger arrived.

Crimson robes. Gold trim. Shen Clan.

"Gu Chen. The Mo Clan requests a meeting. Today. Neutral ground. The Jade Pavilion."

Gu Lian stepped forward. "He doesn't meet alone."

The messenger smiled. "The Mo Clan expects an escort. One person. Your choice."

Gu Lian looked at Gu Chen.

The Soldier: Go.

The King: Learn.

The Beggar: Trap.

The Monk: Choose.

Gu Chen nodded.

"I'll go. Gu Lian with me."

The messenger bowed. "This way."

---

The Jade Pavilion

It stood in the center of the Neutral Zone — a building of pale green stone, surrounded by gardens that bloomed in colors that should not exist.

Gu Chen walked through the gardens, Gu Lian at his side. Warriors in Mo Clan black watched from the shadows but did not approach.

Inside, the pavilion was quiet.

A single figure waited at the center.

A woman. Young, maybe thirty. Dark robes. Eyes that held something ancient.

"Gu Chen." Her voice was soft. "I am Mo Yu. Third daughter of the Mo Clan leader."

The Soldier: Enemy.

The King: Information.

The Beggar: Beautiful. Dangerous.

The Monk: Listen.

Gu Chen said nothing.

Mo Yu smiled. "You don't talk much. I'd heard that." She gestured to cushions on the floor. "Sit. Please."

Gu Chen sat.

Gu Lian remained standing, watching the shadows.

---

The conversation

"You killed four of my clan's shadow killers."

Gu Chen met her gaze.

"Yes."

Mo Yu nodded slowly. "They were good. Expensive to train. Hard to replace." She paused. "My father was angry."

The Soldier: Here it comes.

The King: Revenge?

The Beggar: Or something else.

Gu Chen waited.

Mo Yu leaned forward. "I told him you were just doing what you were told. That you were a weapon, not a choice." Her eyes narrowed. "Was I wrong?"

The Orphan: Weapon.

The Beggar: Property.

The Soldier: Tool.

The King: Not anymore.

Gu Chen met her gaze.

"I choose who I fight."

Mo Yu smiled. It was not a warm smile — but it was not hostile either.

"Good answer." She leaned back. "My father wants you dead. The elders agree. But I..." She paused. "I'm curious about you. A bastard who walked into the Blood Domain alone. A Nascent Soul who kills above his level. A weapon that claims to choose."

The Soldier: She's testing.

The King: She's recruiting.

The Beggar: She's dangerous.

The Monk: She's honest.

Gu Chen said nothing.

Mo Yu stood. "The gathering starts tomorrow. The Eight Clans will meet. Alliances will shift. Enemies will be made." She looked down at him. "When that happens, remember this conversation."

She walked away.

Gu Lian moved to his side. "What was that?"

Gu Chen watched Mo Yu disappear into the shadows.

"I don't know."

---

Day Two — Evening

Gu Mei found him in the compound gardens.

"You met with Mo Yu."

Gu Chen nodded.

"What did she want?"

The Soldier: To test.

The King: To recruit.

The Beggar: To trap.

The Monk: To understand.

Gu Chen considered.

"To see what I am."

Gu Mei stared at him. "And what are you?"

He did not answer.

---

Day Three — The Gathering

The hall was vast.

Carved from black stone, lit by flames that burned without fuel, filled with representatives from all Eight Clans. Shen. Mo. Shi. Kong. Sheng. Si. Ming. Hun.

Gu Chen stood with the Gu Clan delegation, watching.

The Soldier: So many.

The King: So much power.

The Beggar: So many enemies.

The Monk: So many choices.

Gu Lian stood at his side. Gu Mei behind him. Gu Tianming somewhere in the crowd, watching, waiting.

At the center of the hall, a raised platform. Empty.

"The Eight will speak soon," Gu Lian murmured. "Watch. Listen. Learn."

Gu Chen watched.

---

The speeches began.

Clan leaders stepped forward one by one, speaking of alliances, territories, grievances, ambitions. Gu Chen heard the words but listened to what was beneath them.

Fear. Pride. Hunger. Desperation.

The King: This is how they really fight.

The Soldier: With words.

The Beggar: With lies.

The Monk: With truth, sometimes.

Gu Chen watched Mo Yu's father speak. Watched the Shen Clan leader nod. Watched the Shi Clan elder smile at nothing.

And then —

"Gu Clan."

The voice cut through the murmurs.

Gu Tianxiong stepped onto the platform.

"I speak for the Blood Domain."

Silence.

He looked out over the crowd. His gaze found Gu Chen.

"And I speak for my son."

---

The hall erupted.

Whispers. Glances. Pointed fingers.

Gu Chen stood still.

The Orphan: Son.

The Beggar: Property.

The Soldier: Weapon.

The King: Claim.

The Monk: Trap.

Gu Tianxiong raised a hand. Silence returned.

"My son has proven himself. In battle. In loyalty. In blood." He paused. "He will represent the Gu Clan in the coming century. He will speak for us. Fight for us. Die for us, if necessary."

The Orphan: Die for them.

The Beggar: Always.

The Soldier: Not yet.

The King: Not if we choose otherwise.

Gu Chen met his father's gaze.

Gu Tianxiong smiled.

It was the smile of someone who had just played a winning move.

---

After

The crowd dispersed. Delegations returned to their compounds. Whispers followed Gu Chen through the streets.

Gu Mei walked beside him, face pale.

"He just announced you. To everyone. To all Eight Clans."

Gu Chen said nothing.

"You're not just clan now. You're his heir. His representative. His..." She struggled for the word.

The Orphan: Sacrifice.

The Soldier: Shield.

The King: Pawn.

The Beggar: Target.

Gu Chen touched the pendant at his chest.

"I know."

Gu Mei grabbed his arm. "Do you? Do you understand what this means? Every clan here will watch you now. Every enemy will target you. Every ally will test you." Her voice broke. "You're not a person anymore. You're a symbol."

The Orphan: Like always.

The Beggar: Like never.

The Soldier: Like we chose.

The King: Like we'll survive.

Gu Chen looked at her.

"I understand."

She released his arm. Stepped back.

"Then you're a fool." She walked away.

Gu Chen stood alone in the crowded street.

---

That night

He sat at the window of his quarters, looking out at the Neutral Zone.

The city glittered below. Lights from a thousand buildings. Shadows from a thousand plots.

The Orphan: He claimed you.

The Beggar: He owns you.

The Soldier: Not yet.

The King: Not if we're careful.

The Monk: Not if we choose.

Gu Chen touched the pendant.

His mother's face. Still unseen.

But somewhere, in the darkness beyond the city walls, a woman in white was watching.

Waiting.

Counting.

---

Outside the walls

Su Wan stood at the edge of the Neutral Zone.

Her hand pressed against a dying tree.

It cracked.

"Five down," she whispered.

"Four to go."

She looked toward the glittering city.

"He's theirs now," she breathed. "Publicly. Irrevocably."

The wind moved through dead branches.

"Until he chooses otherwise."

She did not move for a long time.
