Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Swift and Awakening

The day I awakened was supposed to be the best day of my life.

That's what they always said. "The day your System activates, everything changes. You become something more than human."

I was seventeen when it happened.

I remember the exact moment — third period, history class, Mr. Davis droning on about the First Awakening War while I stared at the ceiling counting cracks. Then my vision went white.

No warning. No dramatic buildup. Just — white.

And then a sound like the universe clearing its throat.

DING.

[System Initialization Complete.]

[Welcome, Host.]

I sat up straight so fast I knocked my desk over. Every head in the classroom turned toward me. Some kids looked excited — they remembered their own awakening days. Others looked jealous. A few looked bored.

Mr. Davis just sighed. "Mr. Voss. Hallway. Now."

I stumbled out, heart hammering, hands shaking. This was it. This was my moment. Every person on earth awakened to a System between the ages of fifteen and twenty — a personal guide, a power source, a partner for life. Some people got combat systems. Some got crafting systems. Some got rare support types worth millions on the market.

I leaned against the cold hallway wall and pulled up my interface with a thought.

The blue screen materialized in front of me, translucent and glowing.

[System Type: General][Host Name: Kael Voss][Level: 1][Status: Awakened]

I exhaled. General wasn't the most exciting type, but it was solid. Balanced. I could work with that.

Then I scrolled down.

And I saw it.

One extra line. A line I had never seen in any awakening guide, any forum post, any textbook.

[Special Condition: ACTIVE]

I frowned. Special Condition? What does that mean?

I tapped it.

The screen flickered. Like it was... hesitating.

Then new text appeared, slowly, letter by letter, as if being typed by someone deeply reluctant to write it.

[Special Condition — "The Host is, quite frankly, the last person this System would have chosen. Unfortunately, the assignment process is automated and complaints are not accepted.]

[We will make this work. Probably.]

[Probably.]"

I stared at the screen for a very long time.

"...What?"

DING.

[First Quest Assigned: Survive the school day without embarrassing yourself.][Reward: 1 XP][Difficulty: The System has rated this quest — and your chances — as "Questionable."]

I closed my eyes.

Opened them again.

The screen was still there.

"Did you just—" I typed back through the interface, something most people never bothered to do with their Systems. "Did you just insult me?"

A pause.

[The System does not "insult." The System provides honest assessments.]

[Current honest assessment: Host appears confused, disheveled, and is standing in a hallway instead of attending class.]

[This is not a strong start.]

I pressed my back against the wall and looked up at the ceiling.

Somewhere out there, kids were awakening to legendary combat systems. To rare mythic classes. To systems that called them "Chosen One" and handed them world-altering powers.

I got the one that thought I was a mistake.

"Fantastic," I muttered.

DING.

[The System agrees. Adjust expectations accordingly.]
