Chapter 5 - The Door Beneath Rustland

Chapter 5

The ground beneath Kai's boots cracked.

At first, it was just a small vibration.

A faint tremor that made the muddy earth shift slightly under his feet.

Then the vibration deepened.

A low rumble rolled through Rustland Settlement like distant thunder.

Kai blinked slowly.

"…That doesn't sound healthy."

Behind him, several villagers screamed.

The ground in the center of the settlement square split open.

Mud and broken stone collapsed inward as something enormous began pushing up from beneath the earth.

Kai stumbled backward.

"Okay—"

He pointed accusingly at the sky.

"—this is officially too many problems for one day."

The blue system window flickered calmly in front of him.

Statement confirmed.

The massive structure continued rising.

Dust poured down its sides.

Rust and dirt flaked off thick steel panels that clearly hadn't seen sunlight for decades.

With a grinding roar, a gigantic circular metal door emerged from the ground.

The entire settlement trembled.

Even the Titan Gorger near the gate stepped backward uneasily.

Kai stared.

"…Was that always there?"

Old farmer Brant slowly shook his head.

"No."

Kai pointed at the door.

"Because I feel like we would have noticed the giant underground bunker."

The system chimed.

Hidden facility detected.

Origin signature confirmed.

Kai frowned.

"…Origin?"

Kroko glowed softly on his shoulder.

"Kro."

Kai squinted at the tiny caterpillar.

"You know something about this, don't you?"

"Kro."

"That sounded suspicious."

With a deep mechanical groan, ancient locks disengaged.

The massive door slowly slid open.

Cold air rushed up from the darkness below.

Kai leaned forward slightly.

"…That's definitely a secret laboratory."

The system replied calmly.

Correct.

Kai crossed his arms.

"And you didn't think that information was important earlier?"

Host did not ask.

Kai stared at the floating screen.

"…I hate you."

Outside the gate, the Titan Gorger rumbled uneasily.

The Ironfang Warlord had already retreated beyond the monster swarm, watching from a distance.

For now, the monsters weren't attacking.

But the air felt tense.

Like a storm waiting to break.

Kai stepped closer to the opening.

Metal stairs descended deep underground.

A faint blue light flickered far below.

He stopped at the edge.

"…System."

Yes.

"Is this where I die?"

There was a brief pause.

Then the system answered.

Probability: 62%.

Kai sighed.

"Better than one percent, I guess."

Behind him, the villagers watched nervously.

Old Brant stepped forward.

"Kai… maybe we shouldn't go down there."

Kai scratched his head.

"That's a good point."

Then the system chimed loudly.

A new screen appeared.

MISSION UNLOCKED

Human Evolution Path — Phase 1

Objective:

Enter the Origin Facility

Reward:

System Upgrade

New Abilities

Kai stared at the screen.

"…You're bribing me."

Motivation is recommended for weak hosts.

Kai sighed again.

"You really enjoy insulting me."

Correct.

Kai looked back down the dark staircase.

The shadows below seemed to swallow the light.

"…Fine."

He stepped onto the metal stairs.

"They probably have better potatoes down there anyway."

Kroko chirped happily.

"Kro!"

The moment Kai reached the bottom of the stairs—

Lights flickered on.

Rows of old machines filled the underground corridor.

Broken glass tanks.

Cracked computer screens.

Metal tables covered in strange instruments.

Kai blinked slowly.

"…This is definitely a mad scientist laboratory."

The system confirmed.

Facility owner identified:

Dr. Erjuc Jayvex.

Kai froze.

"…The same guy watching me earlier?"

Confirmed.

Kai rubbed his temples.

"So the evil scientist built a secret lab under my potato farm."

Technically correct.

Kai sighed.

"My life makes no sense."

Suddenly one of the nearby screens flickered to life.

Static crackled.

Then an image appeared.

A tall man in a dark lab coat.

Sharp eyes.

A calm, calculating smile.

Dr. Erjuc Jayvex.

The scientist leaned forward slightly, studying Kai through the monitor.

"Well…"

Jayvex said softly.

"So you're the one."

Kai waved awkwardly.

"Hello."

Jayvex chuckled.

"You activated the Evolution System."

Kai pointed at Kroko.

"That was mostly him."

Jayvex's eyes shifted toward the glowing caterpillar.

For the first time—

the scientist looked surprised.

"…Interesting."

Kai crossed his arms.

"If you say you're the villain, I'm leaving. I don't have armor yet."

Jayvex smiled.

"That depends."

He leaned closer to the screen.

"Do you enjoy surviving?"

Kai nodded immediately.

"Yes."

"Then listen carefully."

The screen flickered.

A massive map appeared behind Jayvex.

Ruined cities.

Dead wastelands.

Three massive territories marked across the world.

Forest Territory.

Ocean Territory.

Sky Territory.

Jayvex tapped the screen.

"Human evolution requires adaptation."

Kai frowned.

"…Adaptation to what?"

Jayvex's smile widened.

"Everything."

The scientist continued calmly.

"To evolve beyond extinction, humanity must reclaim the world."

Kai glanced at the map again.

"And the monsters?"

Jayvex shrugged.

"They are evolution's first draft."

Kai blinked.

"…That sounds dangerous."

Jayvex nodded.

"It is."

Then the scientist's voice grew serious.

"There is only one path forward."

The map zoomed in.

A location began blinking red.

Dead Fields.

Jayvex pointed at it.

"Your first step."

Kai groaned.

"That already sounds terrible."

The system chimed again.

NEW MISSION

Travel to Dead Fields

Objective:

Defeat Titan Shell Behemoth

Mission Difficulty: High

Kai blinked.

"…Excuse me?"

He stared at the screen.

"High?!"

Host requested adventure.

Kai sighed.

"I should stop talking."

Jayvex chuckled softly.

"Good luck, Kai Louvan."

The screen went dark.

Kai stood quietly in the underground laboratory.

"…Well."

He turned toward the stairs.

"I guess we're leaving Rustland."

Kroko chirped happily.

"Kro!"

Kai looked down at the tiny caterpillar.

"You're way too excited about this."

The system chimed.

Journey begins.

Kai climbed back up the stairs into the sunlight.

The Titan Gorger still stood outside the settlement gate.

Watching him.

The monster army had retreated deeper into the wasteland.

But the silence outside Rustland felt ominous.

Kai tightened his grip on the bent shovel.

"Alright."

He looked toward the distant wasteland.

"Dead Fields."

Then he sighed.

"…I really need a better weapon."

Far in the distance—

something enormous shifted beneath the cracked earth.

A shell the size of a mountain slowly moved.

Two glowing eyes opened.

And deep within the wasteland…

the Titan Shell Behemoth awakened.
