Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: She Tries to Escape

The corridors of the Vampire Kingdom were colder than any night Selena had ever experienced in the Moonfang forest. Stone walls rose high above her, black and smooth, absorbing the flickering torchlight like shadows.

Selena crouched in the shadows, her heart hammering in her chest. Every step she took had to be precise. Every sound—footsteps, whispers, the soft creak of a door—could mean discovery.

She had been held captive for two days, and already the court's mockery and Adrian's quiet, unnerving authority weighed on her like chains. She could not, would not, remain here.

I belong in Moonfang, she thought, silver eyes glinting. Not in this… palace of monsters.

Selena shifted fully into wolf form for stealth. Her muscles moved fluidly, paws silent on the polished stone floors. The magical restraints had been removed, but guards still patrolled every hallway.

Her plan was simple: reach the outer wall, slip into the night, and vanish into the forest. She had memorized the guards' shifts during her brief observations, timing her move with precision.

The first hallway was clear. She darted past a pair of sleeping guards, keeping low and close to the shadows. Her senses detected every heartbeat, every faint noise of footsteps in the distance.

A door opened suddenly ahead. Two vampires stepped out, talking softly. Selena froze. She flattened herself against the wall, teeth bared in a silent snarl. The vampires passed, oblivious to her presence.

Close, she thought, exhaling quietly.

The second hallway led to the inner courtyard. Moonlight spilled across the stone floor. Beyond it, the outer walls loomed. She could see them in the distance, the spikes gleaming faintly. Freedom was just a few hundred feet away—but danger waited.

Two guards stood near the courtyard exit. They were taller, stronger, and faster than the average vampire soldier. Selena calculated her move. She could take them—but if she killed them openly, the alarm would raise instantly.

Instead, she waited, patience her weapon. She waited for a guard to shift his attention, then launched herself. Claws and fangs struck with precision. One guard toppled silently; the other spun around, fangs bared—but Selena had already leaped to the next shadow, landing gracefully.

Heart pounding, she sprinted across the courtyard.

And then the ground shifted beneath her.

A magical trap ignited, sending a ring of dark energy toward her. Selena rolled, barely avoiding it, ash and sparks spraying into the night. Her fur singed, but she pushed forward, knowing she had to keep going.

She reached the outer wall. High, smooth, impossible to climb… except for one thing. She shifted back to human form, leaping with the strength and speed of her Luna wolf body. Hands found hold on carved ridges, muscles straining, breath coming in ragged gasps.

Halfway up, she froze. Footsteps. Below her, guards had noticed movement. Their eyes glowed red, and one raised a hand, casting a shimmering net of magic toward her.

Selena dodged, twisting mid-air, but the net grazed her shoulder. Pain flared. She hissed, claws slashing through the magical binding. Sparks erupted.

"You cannot escape!" a deep voice called from below.

Selena's heart skipped a beat. Adrian.

She didn't see him, but she could feel it—his presence, powerful and commanding, sweeping across the courtyard like a predator closing in on prey.

Panic clawed at her chest. She scrambled, finally reaching the top of the wall. Below, she saw the forest. Freedom was so close she could almost taste it.

She leapt.

Falling, she tumbled into the shadows of the forest. Pain shot through her leg as she hit the ground, but she pushed forward, sprinting into the trees.

For a moment, she thought she had escaped.

Then a shadow moved faster than her, silent and fluid. A figure emerged from the darkness ahead. Black armor, crimson eyes glinting in the moonlight. Adrian Valerius.

Her chest tightened. "Impossible," she whispered.

He smiled faintly. Calm, controlled, terrifying. "Run, Luna," he said softly. "But know this… there is nowhere in this kingdom you can hide."

Selena skidded to a halt, claws digging into the dirt. Her mind raced. She could fight, she could run, but every escape route was blocked. Every plan she made seemed doomed.

Adrian's eyes locked on hers. For the first time, she saw not cruelty, but… calculation. Strategy. Power. And an unspoken challenge.

This man… she thought, teeth clenched. He is different. Stronger. Smarter. Dangerous.

She lunged into the trees, zigzagging to break his line of sight. Branches tore at her skin, roots tripped her, but she refused to stop. Every step, every breath, was fueled by rage and survival instinct.

But as the distance between them closed again—too fast, too precise—Selena realized a bitter truth: she was trapped.

Her pack's territory was gone, her home destroyed. The Vampire Kingdom was inescapable. And the man standing before her—silent, watching, waiting—was impossible to outrun.

Her claws dug into the dirt. Heart pounding. Breath ragged.

She would not surrender. Not yet.

But Adrian was already closing in.

And Selena Nightbane, Luna of the Moonfang Pack, realized that tonight… the hunt had truly begun.
