Chapter 4 - The moment I noticed

Chapter 5: The Moment I Noticed

The next morning began normally.

Sunlight streamed through the tall windows, filling the kitchen with warm light. Amara had already left for work by the time I woke up, leaving a short message on the counter.

"Meeting early. See you tonight. Don't forget to eat."

I smiled.

Some things never changed. Even at thirty, she still treated me like I was fifteen.

I poured cereal into a bowl and sat at the kitchen island.

A few minutes later, I heard footsteps on the stairs.

Victor.

He walked into the kitchen adjusting the cuff of his shirt, clearly getting ready for work.

"Morning," he said.

"Morning."

He poured himself coffee before sitting across from me.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

I noticed something then.

Up close, Victor didn't actually look fifty.

There were faint lines around his eyes, yes, and a few strands of gray in his hair, but he carried himself with quiet confidence.

The kind of confidence that comes from years of experience.

"You're staring," he said suddenly.

My face heated immediately.

"I'm not."

He raised an eyebrow.

I looked down at my cereal quickly.

"Sorry."

Victor chuckled softly.

"No need to apologize."

He took a sip of his coffee before speaking again.

"So," he said casually, "did you send those applications yesterday?"

"Yes."

"Good."

Silence settled again, but it wasn't uncomfortable.

Just… different.

As Victor stood up to leave, something unexpected happened.

I dropped my spoon.

It clattered loudly onto the floor.

Before I could bend down to pick it up, Victor stepped forward.

We both reached for it at the same time.

Our hands brushed.

Just for a second.

But that second felt longer than it should have.

My breath caught slightly.

Victor's hand paused against mine before he slowly picked up the spoon.

When he handed it back to me, our eyes met.

And in that moment, something shifted.

Something small.

Something dangerous.

I realized something I had never noticed before.

Victor was not just my sister's husband.

He was a man.

And I was suddenly very aware of it.
