Chapter 24 - Echoes In Darkness

The city of Eryndor looked different that night.

Not in the way most people would notice. The streets were still crowded, neon lights still reflected off rain-slick asphalt, and the distant hum of traffic filled the air like it always did.

But to me, something felt… off.

Ever since the creature tried to force its way through the crack above the harbor, the shadows felt heavier.

More aware.

Like the entire city was holding its breath.

Kael, Lyra, and I moved through the industrial district in silence. The warehouses around us stood like sleeping giants, their rusted metal walls creaking softly as the wind passed through narrow alleyways.

I shoved my hands into my jacket pockets, still trying to process everything that had happened.

"So," I finally said, breaking the quiet. "Let me make sure I understand our situation."

Neither of them answered immediately.

"That creature came from another dimension."

"Yes," Lyra replied.

"It tried to drag me through a crack in the sky."

"Yes."

"And there might be thousands more like it."

"That is correct," Kael said calmly.

I nodded slowly.

"Okay."

Lyra glanced at me.

"That's all you have to say?"

"For now."

She frowned slightly.

"You're taking this surprisingly well."

I shrugged.

"Panic is scheduled for later tonight."

Kael almost smiled.

We reached the end of the alley, where the industrial district began to merge with the quieter outskirts of the city. A few streetlights flickered overhead, casting long shadows across the pavement.

The moment we stepped into the light, something strange happened.

The shadows moved.

Not violently like during the fight.

Just slightly.

Like they were reacting to my presence.

I stopped walking.

"You see that too, right?"

Lyra followed my gaze to the ground.

"Yes."

Kael looked down as well.

"The bloodline is still active."

"I figured that much," I said.

The shadows stretched along the pavement like black water, sliding gently around my feet before settling again.

It felt… strange.

Not threatening.

More like the darkness itself was acknowledging me.

Lyra studied the movement carefully.

"Your connection to the shadow realm is growing stronger."

"That doesn't sound safe."

"It isn't."

We continued walking.

The city grew quieter the farther we moved from the harbor. Most of the buildings here were old brick apartments and closed shops, their windows dark.

My phone vibrated again in my pocket.

I froze instantly.

Lyra noticed.

"Another message?"

"Yeah."

I slowly pulled the phone out and looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

Again.

My heart started beating faster.

"Please tell me it doesn't say 'look up' again," Lyra muttered.

I opened the message.

It was only three words.

THEY SAW YOU.

A chill ran down my spine.

"That's not good."

Lyra leaned closer.

"What does it say?"

I turned the screen toward her.

Her expression hardened instantly.

Kael looked at the message as well.

"The sender knows about the creature," he said.

"That's what worries me," I replied.

Lyra crossed her arms.

"This person has warned you twice now."

"Which means they're either helping me…"

"Or manipulating you," Kael finished.

I shoved the phone back into my pocket.

"Either way, I'd really like to know who it is."

Kael glanced around the empty street.

"Someone with access to information we do not have."

"That's comforting."

We turned a corner, entering a narrower street lined with abandoned storefronts. Broken signs hung from rusted brackets, swaying slightly in the wind.

As we walked past one of the buildings, the shadows suddenly shifted again.

But this time it wasn't subtle.

They surged across the ground like a ripple.

I stopped instantly.

"Okay… that's new."

Lyra's hand moved toward the dagger at her belt.

"What is it?"

"I don't know."

Kael's eyes narrowed as he scanned the street.

Then he spoke quietly.

"We are not alone."

My stomach tightened.

"Hunters?"

"Possibly."

The shadows along the buildings began stretching unnaturally long, crawling up the walls like living things.

I felt the bloodline pulse again in my chest.

Harder this time.

Like a warning.

"Something's wrong," I said.

Lyra's gaze swept across the rooftops.

"I don't see anyone."

"That doesn't mean they aren't here," Kael replied.

The wind suddenly died.

The entire street went silent.

Then…

Footsteps.

Slow.

Deliberate.

They echoed from the far end of the street.

Three figures stepped out of the darkness.

They wore long black coats, their faces partially hidden by the dim streetlight behind them.

Hunters.

My shoulders tensed instantly.

"Well," I muttered, "that didn't take long."

Lyra's voice dropped.

"They must have sensed the crack opening."

One of the hunters stepped forward slightly.

His voice was calm but cold.

"Adrian Vale."

I sighed.

"Great. They know my name now."

"You have caused enough damage," the hunter continued.

Kael stepped slightly in front of me.

"You should leave."

The hunter ignored him.

"The council has made its decision."

I frowned.

"That sounds official."

Lyra whispered under her breath.

"Be ready."

The hunter's gaze locked onto me.

"The bloodline ends tonight."

My patience snapped.

"You people say that every time we meet."

Without warning, the hunters drew their weapons.

Blades made of dark metal gleamed under the streetlights.

Three against three.

But something felt wrong.

The bloodline surged violently in my chest again.

Stronger than before.

The shadows around the street began twisting wildly.

Lyra noticed it immediately.

"Adrian…"

"I feel it."

The darkness across the entire street seemed to come alive.

Every shadow stretched toward me.

Even the hunters hesitated slightly.

Kael's voice lowered.

"Your power is reacting again."

"But why now?"

Then I realized something.

The message.

They saw you.

My eyes widened.

"Oh no."

Lyra looked at me.

"What?"

"They weren't talking about the hunters."

The shadows surged upward like a storm breaking loose.

And suddenly I understood.

Something else had seen me tonight.

Something beyond the cracks.

Something from the shadow realm.

And it was still watching.
