Chapter 1 - THE ARRIVAL

The dust from the old truck settled slowly over the compound as Mulenga stepped down, his weathered hand gripping the side rail. Behind him came his wife, Thandiwe, her face a mixture of hope and exhaustion, followed by three children who stared wide-eyed at the sprawling 11 hectares of land that would become their new world.

Mr. Banda, Mulenga's wife's cousin, stood waiting under the mango tree with a smile that carried the weight of expectation. He was a teacher—educated, respected, the kind of man who read books and spoke about progress. His wife, Mrs. Banda, stood beside him, her expression carefully neutral.

"This is your chance," Mr. Banda had said when he first proposed the arrangement. "A fresh start. All I ask is that you care for the farm and the cattle. We'll provide the house, the land, and security."

Mulenga nodded, not trusting his voice. He had been drifting for years—odd jobs, temporary work, the kind of life that left a man feeling like a ghost in his own country. This was salvation wrapped in opportunity.

The house was small but solid, with a tin roof that caught the afternoon sun. There was a kitchen separate from the main room, and behind it, a garden already planted with vegetables. The cattle grazed in the distance, brown and patient, waiting for someone to love them.

That first night, Thandiwe cooked a meal on the outdoor fire, and their children laughed—actually laughed—for the first time in months. Mulenga watched the smoke rise into the darkening sky and allowed himself to believe that God had finally remembered him.

"We'll make this work," Thandiwe whispered, squeezing his hand. "We'll make this beautiful."

He believed her.
