Chapter 42 - School Mishap #3: The Demonstration Disaster

Helix Academy decided—unwisely—to continue the day as if nothing had happened.

This meant afternoon training.

In the main practice arena.

With half the Academy present.

Lyra saw opportunity immediately.

She leaned toward Valentina as they watched students assemble.

"We need a bigger moment."

Valentina eyed her carefully.

"Define bigger."

Lyra pointed at the center arena.

"Public tension resolution."

Kael, who had heard everything, sighed.

"This will end poorly."

Dorian grinned.

"I'm in."

Cassian groaned.

"No."

The Setup

Instructor Halvorsen assigned students to demonstration pairs.

When he called Aurelio and Vesper together again, half the arena leaned forward.

Lyra whispered loudly from the stands,

"DESTINY."

Vesper ignored her.

Aurelio stepped into position across from her.

Halvorsen spoke calmly.

"Density modulation versus light refraction control."

Aurelio inclined his head slightly.

"Try not to collapse the floor."

Vesper smirked.

"No promises."

They began.

Aurelio bent light across the arena, creating a shifting refractive field.

Vesper stepped through it, body shifting between phases of density.

The audience murmured.

They moved well together.

Too well.

Lyra leaned forward.

"This is going great."

Valentina frowned slightly.

"That means something terrible is about to happen."

The Lyra Variable

Lyra pulled a small resonance disruptor from her bag.

Cassian immediately noticed.

"No."

"It's tiny!"

"No."

"It'll make the moment dramatic!"

Cassian grabbed for it.

Too late.

Lyra pressed the button.

A soft pulse rippled across the arena.

Vesper's density field surged.

Aurelio's light refraction doubled.

For a split second—

They collided.

Not violently.

But suddenly.

Aurelio grabbed her instinctively to steady her balance.

The arena went completely silent.

They were standing far too close.

His arm still around her waist.

Her hand braced against his chest.

Someone in the audience whispered loudly,

"Oh."

Lyra slapped both hands over her mouth.

Dorian burst out laughing.

Halvorsen stared.

"Why," he said slowly, "did the resonance field spike."

Cassian pointed at Lyra without hesitation.

"Her."

Lyra tried to look innocent.

It did not work.

The Aftermath

Vesper stepped back quickly.

Aurelio cleared his throat.

Halvorsen walked toward them.

"Explain."

Lyra raised her hand from the stands.

"It was a learning opportunity."

Halvorsen stared at her.

"You are banned from touching equipment."

Lyra beamed.

"Worth it."
