Chapter 14 - Academy: Fault Lines

Helix Academy introduced joint-variant exercises between Vale and Orsini students.

Public unity demonstration.

It went poorly.

Variant Synchronization Exercise

Density modulation + light bending required precision timing.

Vesper and Aurelio paired together.

Kael and Valentina paired together too.

The irony was not lost on anyone.

"Begin," Halvorsen commanded.

Vesper hardened a localized barrier.

Aurelio refracted light around it.

The effect was stunning.

Nearly invisible.

Stable.

Kael attempted mimicry of Vesper's density field.

Valentina bent light around him.

For a moment—

It worked.

Then Kael's mimic destabilized.

His arm flickered.

He absorbed too much resonance.

Collapsed to one knee.

Valentina caught him.

"Stop overreaching," she hissed.

"I am not overreaching."

"You're compensating."

The words landed heavily.

Across the arena, Vesper saw him falter.

She stepped toward him instinctively.

Stopped herself.

He stabilized.

Pulled away from Valentina.

"I don't need assistance."

Valentina's eyes cooled.

"You nearly fractured your helix."

The class fell silent.

The tension between all four of them thickened.

Instructor Halvorsen watched thoughtfully.

There were fractures here.

And fractures could be exploited.

Late Night Break-In

Lyra dragged Vesper and Valentina into the Academy archives after hours.

"For investigation," she insisted.

"You are fifteen," Vesper said.

"I am motivated."

They accessed helix-frequency archives.

Valentina traced interference patterns.

"These signatures don't match either family entirely."

"Hybrid?" Vesper asked.

"Modified."

Lyra leaned too hard on a console.

Set off a silent alarm.

Red lights flashed.

Security drones descended.

Valentina bent light to conceal them.

Vesper softened the floor, sinking them into maintenance crawlspace.

They landed in dust and wires.

Lyra grinned.

"This is bonding."

Vesper stared at her.

"You are chaos."

Valentina laughed despite herself.

For the first time—

They felt like sisters in conspiracy.

Above them, Kael reviewed security feeds.

He saw the crawlspace flicker.

Saw Vesper vanish.

His expression was unreadable.
