Chapter 14 - The Quiet Transformation

From the outside, it appeared as though Han Sooah had simply stepped away from work to rest.

Official statements from Hanseong Holdings described it as a temporary leave for recovery after exhaustion. The markets accepted the explanation easily enough. After all, executives of enormous companies sometimes vanished briefly to recover from burnout. It was neither unprecedented nor suspicious.

Behind the public narrative, however, reality had become far darker.

Inside their home in Seoul, life had quietly transformed into something fragile and frightening.

Sooah believed she was merely resting.

Daehyun knew she was slowly losing pieces of herself.

The Illusion of Rest

When Sooah returned home from the hospital, she seemed calmer.

The doctors had prescribed medication to stabilize her condition—pills she believed were meant to help regulate stress and sleep cycles.

In truth, some of them contained mild sedatives.

Not enough to fully incapacitate her.

But enough to ensure that when night came, sleep would arrive quickly and deeply.

Daehyun hated himself a little every time he handed her the glass of water.

"Doctor's orders," he would say gently.

She never questioned it.

Why would she?

Her memory episodes often erased the days surrounding hospital visits, and the doctors had carefully explained that fatigue and rest were part of her recovery.

Sooah trusted him.

Even during moments when she didn't fully remember him.

And that trust hurt more than anything.

Two Lives in One Day

Daehyun's days had become divided into two entirely separate worlds.

During daylight hours, he remained at home.

He stayed close to Sooah constantly.

He watched her carefully, always alert for the subtle shift in her eyes that meant another memory fracture had begun.

Sometimes entire mornings passed peacefully.

She remembered him.

She laughed with Minjun.

They ate breakfast together like a normal family.

But other times—

Everything changed in seconds.

Her gaze would sharpen suddenly.

Her body stiffen.

And the questions would begin.

"Who are you?"

"Why are you in my house?"

"Where is my son?"

Each time it happened, Daehyun felt the same quiet pain unfold in his chest.

But there was no time to dwell on it.

Because if her confusion escalated, things could turn dangerous.

The First Time She Hurt Him

It happened one afternoon while Minjun was playing on the floor.

Sooah had been sitting on the couch reading when suddenly she froze.

Her eyes moved slowly toward Daehyun.

And the suspicion appeared instantly.

"You again."

Her voice was low.

"You followed me home."

Daehyun set down the toy truck he had been holding for Minjun.

"Sooah, it's okay."

"Don't say my name."

She stood abruptly.

"You've been stalking me."

"No."

"You're lying."

Her gaze darted toward Minjun.

"And now there's a baby here."

The baby crawled happily toward her.

"Mama!"

The sound only made her more alarmed.

She grabbed the nearest object—a heavy book from the table—and threw it.

Daehyun barely managed to move in time.

The book struck his shoulder hard.

Minjun began crying immediately.

That was the moment Daehyun realized something terrifying.

Her confusion was no longer just emotional.

It was physical.

The Fear for Minjun

After that incident, Daehyun changed everything.

Minjun was never left alone in the same room as Sooah.

Not even for a moment.

If she held the baby, Daehyun remained within arm's reach.

If Minjun played in another room, Daehyun stayed beside him.

Even during peaceful periods when Sooah clearly remembered everything, he never relaxed completely.

Because memory episodes could appear without warning.

And Minjun was too small to understand danger.

The Night Shift

Once Sooah fell asleep, Daehyun's second life began.

Around midnight, he would quietly leave the bedroom.

The house lights dim.

The city outside dark and quiet.

He would drive across Seoul to the towering offices of KGI Group and Hanseong Holdings.

Two empires.

Both temporarily resting in his untrained hands.

Board documents stacked across desks.

Strategy reports waiting for approval.

Executives sending questions that demanded immediate answers.

The first nights were overwhelming.

He stared at spreadsheets until his eyes burned.

Read corporate contracts he barely understood.

Sat through late-night meetings with directors who politely pretended they weren't testing him.

But slowly, painfully, he began learning.

Because failure was not an option.

If the companies collapsed, Sooah's life's work would vanish.

And when she finally recovered—

She would wake to ruins.

That thought alone kept him awake through endless nights.

The Realization

But the most profound transformation did not happen in the boardroom.

It happened one evening at home.

Sooah had woken during a memory episode.

She believed again that Daehyun was a stranger in her house.

This time her panic escalated faster.

She knocked over a chair.

Shattered a glass vase.

Minjun started crying.

Daehyun tried calming her.

"Sooah, stop."

"Don't come near me!"

She grabbed a metal lamp and swung it wildly.

It struck his arm hard.

Pain shot through him immediately.

But he didn't step back.

Instead he grabbed her wrists.

Not violently.

But firmly.

Holding them still.

She struggled violently.

"Let go of me!"

He tightened his grip slightly.

"Sooah."

His voice was steady.

"You're safe."

She kept fighting.

But eventually exhaustion slowed her movements.

Finally she collapsed into the couch, breathing heavily.

And the realization struck him quietly.

If she had been stronger—

He might not have been able to stop her.

And Minjun could have been hurt.

The Decision

That night, after both Sooah and Minjun were asleep, Daehyun stood alone in the dark living room.

His arm still throbbed from the lamp strike.

The house felt too quiet.

Too fragile.

He looked down at his hands.

They were soft.

Unused to real physical strength.

He had lived most of his life comfortably.

Protected by wealth.

Protected by Sooah.

But now she needed protection.

From the world.

And from herself.

The Transformation Begins

The next evening, during Sooah's scheduled afternoon nap, Daehyun walked into the private gym inside the Kang residence.

He stared at the equipment for a long time.

He had never taken exercise seriously before.

But tonight felt different.

He stepped onto the mat.

Picked up a pair of weights.

And began.

At first the movements felt awkward.

His arms trembled under the strain.

Sweat formed quickly.

But he continued.

Day after day.

Every evening during Sooah's sedated naps.

Push-ups.

Weights.

Running.

Strength training.

Not for appearance.

Not for vanity.

But for survival.

Because the next time she panicked—

He needed to be strong enough to hold her without hurting her.

Strong enough to protect Minjun.

Strong enough to keep everyone safe.

The Man in the Mirror

Weeks passed.

The transformation was slow but relentless.

Dark circles appeared under Daehyun's eyes from sleepless nights balancing corporate work and physical training.

His shoulders grew broader.

His movements sharper.

Executives at Hanseong Holdings began noticing the change.

The once carefree heir now spoke in meetings with quiet authority.

His decisions became precise.

Calculated.

And at home, the gentle father who once spent afternoons playing video games had become something else entirely.

A man constantly watching.

Constantly prepared.

Constantly ready to intervene if Sooah's mind fractured again.

The Quiet Fear

Late one night, after returning from another exhausting meeting at KGI Group, Daehyun stood beside the bed where Sooah slept.

Her breathing was soft.

Peaceful.

In sleep, she looked exactly like the woman he had fallen in love with years ago at Harvard University.

The woman who had proposed to him.

The woman who had promised he would never have to fight alone again.

He sat quietly beside her.

And for the first time since her illness began, a terrible thought formed in his mind.

If her condition continued getting worse—

If the memory fractures grew more violent—

If one day she truly lost herself completely…

Would he be strong enough to hold onto her?

Or would he eventually have to let the woman he loved disappear piece by piece?

The thought lingered long after he turned off the light.

Because deep down, Daehyun already understood something terrifying.

The life they once shared was gone.

And the man he had become—

was someone he barely recognized anymore.
