Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Contract

Serena Moore wasn't the type of person who showed her emotions, or at least, not in a way that made it obvious. If you asked anyone who knew her, they'd tell you that she was all about business—serious, sharp, and a little cold. To be fair, that was how she had to be. After all, she was the CEO of Moore Enterprises, the family business her father had built from the ground up, and she wasn't about to let it slip through her fingers.

She sat at her desk, surrounded by glass walls, high-end furniture, and the distant hum of the city below. From her office, she could see the skyline of the city—a constant reminder of the success she had achieved. The world outside her windows was filled with opportunity, but in her own office, there was only one thing on her mind: saving her family's legacy.

The news she'd just gotten that morning was enough to make anyone panic. Her father had built Moore Enterprises with his hands—his vision, his sweat, his dreams. But when he died a year ago, he left Serena with more than just the business. He left her with a mountain of debt. An unfortunate combination of a failed expansion and risky investments had put Moore Enterprises on the brink of collapse.

Serena had been fighting tooth and nail to keep the company afloat ever since, dealing with everything from budget cuts to angry investors, all while trying to maintain her father's reputation. But nothing seemed to work. Every move she made was met with more obstacles, more roadblocks, until it felt like she was drowning in a sea of unpaid bills and crushing expectations.

She rubbed her temples, staring at the numbers on her computer screen. The latest offer from a rival corporation was a buyout—a deal that would strip her of everything she had worked for. All that time, all that effort. Gone.

Her hand shook as she reached for the phone. She dialed the number of her assistant, trying to keep the panic from rising in her chest. "Lily, I need you to prepare the boardroom for a meeting. I need all the documents for the merger proposal. Now."

"Of course, Serena," Lily replied, her voice steady, the opposite of how Serena felt. "I'll have everything ready."

Serena ended the call and leaned back in her chair, staring at the ceiling. She couldn't afford to lose. She wouldn't let it happen. But how could she fight when every angle she tried was falling apart? It wasn't supposed to be like this. She had worked so hard to protect the business. She had sacrificed so much. Her personal life was a mess—her love life non-existent. But all of it had been for the company, for the legacy. She had to win, no matter the cost.

The door to her office creaked open, and Serena snapped out of her thoughts. She wiped away the frustration that was creeping into her expression and looked up.

A man stood in the doorway, tall and impeccably dressed in a dark suit. His sharp jawline and intense gaze made him look like he had just stepped out of a magazine. There was something about him—something mysterious, almost intimidating. His name was Gavin Hayes, and he was everything Serena wasn't: rich, powerful, and always in control.

"Mr. Hayes," Serena said, her voice steady, though the man's presence made her feel uneasy. "I wasn't expecting you today."

Gavin Hayes was the CEO of Hayes Enterprises, one of the biggest competitors in the corporate world. He was known for his ruthless efficiency and near-perfect public image. But no one truly knew the man behind the press releases—he was a mystery, a shadow in the business world. And Serena had never thought much about him, until now.

"I thought we should talk," Gavin said, his deep voice calm, almost soothing. "It seems we both have a bit of a problem."

Serena's brows furrowed. "And what problem would that be?"

Gavin stepped into the room, closing the door behind him. He didn't wait for an invitation to sit, instead lowering himself into the chair across from her desk. His posture was perfect, his confidence radiating as if he had nothing to fear. Serena couldn't help but feel a little uneasy.

"You're losing," Gavin said, his words blunt but not unkind. "And so am I."

Serena blinked, caught off guard by his straightforwardness. "I'm sorry?"

"I know about Moore Enterprises," he continued, his gaze unwavering. "The debts, the buyout offer, the mounting pressure. You're struggling, Serena. And I'm in a similar position. Hayes Enterprises has some image issues—bad press, rumors swirling, and investors getting nervous. You're at a crossroads. So am I. The only difference is that I have a way out. And you, well, you don't have a lot of options left."

Serena couldn't help but bristle at his words, even though they were painfully accurate. She opened her mouth to argue but stopped herself. There was nothing to say. He was right. She was losing, and the clock was ticking.

"What do you want?" she asked, her voice quieter now.

Gavin's lips curled into a small, knowing smile. "I have a proposal for you."

Serena narrowed her eyes. "I'm listening."

Gavin leaned forward slightly, his eyes locking with hers. "A marriage contract."

Serena froze. "A what?"

"A marriage contract," Gavin repeated, his tone steady and businesslike. "A public marriage to protect both of our images. You need the stability, the optics, and I need a perfect, scandal-free marriage to improve my public perception. You'll get the security of keeping Moore Enterprises afloat, and I'll get the public approval I need to continue running Hayes Enterprises."

Serena blinked, unable to process the words. "Are you serious? You want me to marry you? In a contract? No love, no attachment, just for the sake of appearances?"

Gavin's gaze never wavered. "Exactly. No love, no emotions. Just business."

The silence between them was thick, as if the words were sinking in. A contract marriage—what was he asking for? And what did he think she was? Someone who would just go along with a proposal like this?

But then… Serena looked at the numbers on her screen again. The buyout offer. The mounting pressure. The future of the company.

Was she really in a position to turn this down?

Her mind raced. Marrying someone she barely knew—someone like Gavin Hayes—wasn't something she had ever imagined. But the more she thought about it, the more she realized that it might be the only way out.

Gavin's voice broke through her thoughts. "You'll maintain full control of Moore Enterprises. I won't interfere with the business side of things. I'm just here for the image, the public perception. And you get the public marriage you need."

Serena exhaled slowly, looking at him with an unreadable expression. She could feel the weight of the decision pressing down on her. The contract, the marriage—it wasn't what she wanted. But in that moment, it felt like it was all she had left.

"If I agree to this… we won't have any emotional attachments, right?" she asked, her voice a little sharper now. "This is just for appearances. Nothing more?"

Gavin's lips curled into that same, confident smile. "Exactly. No emotions. No strings. Just business. You protect your legacy, and I protect mine."

Serena stared at him for a long moment, trying to process everything. She had never imagined her life taking this turn, never thought she would be here, on the edge of agreeing to something that went against everything she believed in.

But in the end, she had no choice.

She extended her hand across the desk, her fingers brushing lightly against his. "Fine. We have a deal."

Gavin shook her hand firmly, his grip cool and businesslike. "Great. We'll draw up the contract, and from here on out, we're husband and wife—at least in the public eye."

Serena felt a strange, tight knot in her stomach as she pulled her hand back. There was a part of her that wanted to run, that wanted to scream at him for even suggesting this. But she didn't. She had made her choice. The family business, the future of everything her father had built, depended on this.

"Let's get to work then," Serena said, her voice steady.

And just like that, her life had changed. Forever.
