Chapter 2 - The Regulator

His consciousness drifted for what felt like days, he could see only tiny specs of dust-like particles that glowed like stars. Every time he tried to touch them they faded into nothingness.

'Where am I?' He asked himself inwardly as he drifted around, floating in the sea of darkness, images of the moment before his passing slowly appearing in his mind.

He could still hear the loud sounds of the train that crushed him to pieces.

'Did I die?' He mused as he spun around with a wry smile on his face, 'didn't know heaven was so boring, I expected angels, gold pavements and gates, and everything I've read about, tuh!'

'Or maybe this is hell, in that case it makes sense that I'd drift endlessly in darkness forever, as punishment for all my sins.'

"I'm here to answer all your questions Jacob Stone."A divinely sounding voice called out from behind him, he immediately turned his gaze to a bright creature, shimmering before him.

It didn't have the shape or outline of anything in particular, but its presence was undeniable.

"W-who are you?" Jacob asked, placing his arm above his eyes to see better.

"Oh, I am many things, to many people, God, Infinite being, Super Creator, Father of Time, all you need to know is I control the happenings of what you know as the universe." The being responded, its voice a deep silky smooth melody that rang in Jacob's ears.

"So you're a god, or THE God?"

The being laughed melancholically, "Nonsense, no puny god is more powerful than me, they know it themselves, you can just call me Regulator."

"Okay Regulator, can you please tell me what this place is and why I am here?" Jacob asked again, his voice calmer.

"Oh definitely," the being had begun to revolve around him now. "Jacob you lived a life of misery, your father left you as a child, and in 25 years you have been unable to make something out of your life, but as you died, your soul showed resilience, glowing a deep blue, frankly I have never seen anything like it."

"I know that but you go-" Jacob said, immediately going into defense mode.

"Therefore!" The being interrupted him, "The council met and decided to bring your soul to Eden, you are only here because this is where extraordinary souls like yours are given a second chance and made to choose a new path."

"A second chance?" Jacob inquired with confusion in his eyes, "A new path?"

"Yes Jacob."

Jacob was a firm believer of reincarnation, from all the novels and comics he had read, he believed it to be true, but he had never thought he would ever get the chance to reincarnate, let alone be able to choose what his next life will be.

"So I get to choose my own reality, is that what you're saying?" Jacob asked with a glint in his eyes, he could hardly believe what he was hearing.

"There are infinite worlds Jacob, and I oversee them all, just let me know the kind of world you want, and it'll be arranged." The being spoke with unmistakable certainty.

Jacob stared at this being silently, he had fantasized about this exact moment a million times, so without even thinking, his mouth went off.

"Magic…. Swords… Cultivation… Monsters… Martial Arts…. System…"

He kept going on and on, the Regulator listened and eventually waved its hand to silence the chattering soul.

Thousands of glowing spheres appeared around Jacob, swirling around him one after the other, they were portals to different worlds.

In one world, he could see warriors clashing atop a mountain that split the clouds.

In another he could see dragons, burning entire cities to ash.

Another showed him angels descending from golden gates as he watched as demons crawled out from crimson rifts in the sky.

He stared in awe at these scenes unfolding before him as he finally found the one that suited him.

"Here! This is where I want to go," Jacob affirmed as he stared into the portal, in it he could see a man, standing on a sword, lightning crackled around him as he soared the skies with no restrictions.

"Are you sure?" The Regulator asked him.

"Yes, 100%, I choose this world." Jacob's said, his mind immediately drifting to something he had almost forgotten. "Based on the novels I've read, reincarnation is always accompanied by a cheat ability."

"You are correct, what cheat ability would you like?"

"All of them." Jacob smiled sinisterly.

The being almost gasped at Jacob's response, but then it laughed inwardly, as it had already known Jacob's answer beforehand from reading his mind.

"…"

"Did you hear me? Regulator sir." Jacob asked.

"Yes I heard you, this has certainly never been done before, but then you have a really powerful soul…"

"If you can handle this, Jacob, you're set to become someone feared."

"I can handle it, I'm sure."

"Very well." The Regulator waved its hand, granting him a prototype system that would only evolve with time in this new world.

Jacob was very excited and couldn't wait to start over, in his former life he had been nothing, invisible and pathetic.

He thought about the two men laughing at him as he got crushed to bits.

"I'm prepared for whatever, if I'm going to get a second life, I refuse to have a boring one. Send me to the Cultivation World."

"As you wish Jacob Stone"

The sphere expanded rapidly until everything was engulfed by it and just like that Jacob was gone.
