The silver rings on Kim Do hyun's fingers felt heavier than usual that morning, pressing against his skin with a cold, unyielding weight. He sat at the back of the lecture hall, his pen moving mechanically across the notebook while his mind drifted elsewhere. The university campus was bustling with life, filled with students laughing and rushing to their next classes, but Do hyun remained an island of silence amidst the noise. He kept his hands tucked into his pockets whenever possible, hiding the ancient bands of metal that he never removed. They were a part of him, or perhaps a cage around him, and he had learned long ago not to question their presence.
Do hyun said: "I just need to get through today."
He whispered the words to himself, his voice barely audible over the professor's droning lecture. The sunlight filtered through the high windows, casting long shadows across the room, but Do hyun avoided looking at them. Shadows had always made him uneasy, shifting in the corner of his vision as if they held secrets he was not meant to know. He adjusted his glasses and tried to focus on the board, but the faint hum vibrating from the rings distracted him. It was a sensation he had grown accustomed to over the years, a low level static that reminded him he was different from everyone else in this room.
When the bell finally rang, signaling the end of the class, Do hyun packed his bag slowly. He waited for the crowd to thin out before standing up, preferring the solitude of the emptying hallway to the crush of bodies. As he stepped outside into the crisp autumn air, he saw two familiar figures waiting for him by the old oak tree near the library entrance. Me ri was waving enthusiastically, her bright smile cutting through the gray mood of the day, while Yoo han stood beside her, checking something on his tablet with a focused expression.
Me ri said: "We were starting to think you skipped class again."
Do hyun approached them, forcing a faint smile to match her energy. He appreciated their persistence in including him, even when he pushed them away with his silence. They were the only people who seemed to understand that his isolation was not out of arrogance, but out of necessity. He did not want to drag them into whatever darkness lingered around him.
Do hyun replied: "I was just tired. The lecture was long."
Yoo han looked up from his device, his eyes sharp behind his glasses. He scanned Do hyun's face, analyzing micro expressions with the precision of a strategist assessing a battlefield. Yoo han asked: "Are you sure nothing else is bothering you? Your energy readings seem off today."
Do hyun laughed nervously and shoved his hands deeper into his pockets, the metal rings clinking softly against each other. He knew Yoo han had built sensors that could detect anomalies, but he hoped his friend could not detect the supernatural weight pressing down on his soul.
Do hyun said: "It is just lack of sleep. Do not worry about your machines."
Me ri linked her arm through his, pulling him gently toward the campus cafe. She talked about her weekend plans and a new movie she wanted to see, her voice a steady stream of normalcy that Do hyun clung to. For a moment, he allowed himself to believe that he was just an ordinary student with ordinary problems. The three of them walked together, joking about professors and upcoming exams, creating a fragile bubble of peace that felt almost real.
As they reached the cafe entrance, a sudden, sharp tremor ran through the rings on Do hyun's left hand. It was not the usual hum, but a violent shudder that sent a jolt of pain up his arm. He stopped walking abruptly, his breath catching in his throat. The world seemed to tilt for a second, the colors draining away into a monochrome gray before snapping back to normal.
Me ri asked: "Do hyun? What is wrong?"
Do hyun shook his head quickly, dismissing the sensation as a muscle spasm. He could not tell them that the rings felt like they were burning ice, or that he heard a faint whisper echoing in the back of his mind. He forced himself to take a deep breath and straighten his posture.
Do hyun replied: "Nothing. I just stumbled. Let us get coffee."
They spent the next hour inside the warm cafe, the smell of roasted beans filling the air. The conversation flowed easily, but Do hyun found it hard to concentrate. Every few minutes, he glanced at his hands, expecting the silver to glow or crack, but they remained inert and cold. He told himself it was stress, nothing more. The storm he feared was not coming today. Eventually, the sun began to set, casting long orange streaks across the sky, and the group decided to part ways. Yoo han headed to the lab, and Me ri went toward the dorms, leaving Do hyun to walk home alone.
The walk to his apartment took him through quieter streets, where the streetlights flickered to life one by one. Do hyun kept his head down, his pace steady. The city noise faded into the background, replaced by the sound of his own footsteps echoing on the pavement. He felt a sense of relief being alone again, away from the need to pretend. The rings were silent now, resting quietly against his skin as if the earlier tremor had never happened.
He turned a corner into a narrow alleyway that served as a shortcut to his building. The air here was cooler, and the shadows stretched long and thin between the brick walls. Do hyun quickened his step, eager to reach the safety of his room. He did not look back, trusting in the mundane reality of the city to protect him. However, high above on a fire escape, a figure cloaked in darkness watched his descent. The figure did not move, blending perfectly with the night, its eyes glowing with a faint, predatory light.
The shadowy figure said: "Finally, the seal weakens."
A slow, cruel smile spread across the face of the observer as Do hyun disappeared around the bend, vanishing from sight but not from memory. The hunt had begun, and the ordinary mask Do hyun wore was starting to crack.
