Volume 1: Rebirth in Sakura High
Arc Title: From Kot Addu Streets to Oppai Paradise – The Awakening
Chapter 6: Spirals of Desire and Dread
The takoyaki stall at the edge of the courtyard smelled like heaven—crispy batter, savory octopus, and that perfect drizzle of mayo and bonito flakes dancing in the spring breeze. Zain stood in line with the girls, laughing at Chika's dramatic retelling of her latest Student Council "emergency" while his mind screamed in two directions at once. On one side: pure bliss. Sawako stood close enough that her shoulder brushed his arm every time she shifted. Hori was teasing Taiga about stealing the last piece of spicy chicken earlier, and Yotsuba was bouncing on her toes demanding extra sauce. Kaguya watched everything with that elegant half-smile, like she was already three moves ahead in some mental game.
On the other side: the rooftop. The system's warning still pulsed behind his eyes like a migraine.
[Spiral Anomaly: 87% Formed. Containment Window: 9 minutes.]
Zain kept the grin plastered on his face. No way I'm letting some Junji Ito nightmare crash this moment. These girls are my oppai paradise. One cursed spiral is not ruining dessert.
He paid for two massive trays—extra spicy for Hori and Taiga, mild for Sawako—and handed them out like a pro. "First round's on me, ladies. Eat up before the club fair ends and we all have to go home like normal people."
Sawako accepted her tray with both hands, cheeks pink. "Thank you, Zain-kun. You're… always so thoughtful."
[Sawako Affection +6% – Current: 81% – "He remembered I don't like it too spicy…"]
Hori popped a takoyaki into her mouth and raised an eyebrow. "Smooth. You're racking up points fast, transfer boy."
Taiga huffed but took three at once. "Don't think this buys you anything, idiot."
Chika squealed and hugged his arm, nearly spilling sauce everywhere. "Best transfer student ever! Kaguya-senpai, we're keeping him!"
Kaguya allowed herself a tiny smirk. "We shall see."
Yotsuba was already halfway through her tray, sauce on her cheeks. "Mmm! Mister Strong makes everything better!"
Zain laughed along, but the timer in his head ticked down. Six minutes left. He set his own tray on a nearby bench and clapped his hands. "Hey, I just remembered—I left my phone in the club room earlier. Gotta grab it before they lock up. Save me some of the spicy ones, okay? Back in two minutes, promise."
Sawako's smile faltered for half a second. "Are you sure? You look a little… tense again."
Hori's sharp eyes narrowed. "That's the second time today. You're not hiding something, are you?"
Zain winked, CHA stat flaring like a spotlight. "Me? Hide things? Never. Just don't want my mom blowing up my phone if I miss her check-in. Be right back!"
He jogged off before anyone could argue, weaving through the thinning crowd. The moment he was out of sight he activated Stealth Mode, footsteps silent, presence fading into the background noise of the fair. He took the side stairs two at a time, heart pounding with a mix of adrenaline and dread.
The rooftop door creaked open. Wind whipped across the open space, carrying the distant sounds of music and laughter from below. But the air here felt wrong—thick, oily, like ink bleeding into water. In the center of the concrete, right under the water tower, the anomaly had taken shape.
A swirling vortex of black spirals twisted upward from the ground like living tattoos. They crawled across the rooftop in hypnotic patterns, pulling at the edges of reality. At the heart of it floated a single discarded school ribbon—now writhing, growing longer, twisting into grotesque hair-like strands that reached for the sky. The air around it smelled of old paper and wet concrete mixed with something metallic.
Zain's stomach turned. Uzumaki. Actual spiral curse. System wasn't kidding.
[Anomaly Identified: Minor Uzumaki Manifestation – Level 12]
[Weak Point: Core Ribbon. Destroy before it anchors.]
[Warning: Physical contact risks spiral infection. Use ranged or improvised weapons.]
The spirals surged toward him the second he stepped fully onto the roof. One tendril lashed out like a whip, aiming for his ankle. Zain dove sideways, rolling behind an air-conditioning unit. The concrete where he had stood cracked in a perfect spiral pattern.
"Alright, you creepy bastard," he growled, grabbing a loose metal pipe from a maintenance pile. "Time to play."
He charged. The pipe whistled through the air as he swung it like a baseball bat, smashing the leading spiral tendril. Black ink-like fluid sprayed, hissing where it hit the ground. The anomaly screamed—a sound like nails on chalkboard mixed with whispering voices. More spirals erupted, wrapping around the pipe and trying to twist it from his grip.
Zain's new regeneration kicked in the instant a thin spiral grazed his wrist. Skin burned, but the wound sealed almost immediately. Thank you, Ghoul Resistance Fragment. You just saved my arm.
He yanked the pipe free and drove it straight into the floating ribbon core. The impact sent a shockwave through the entire vortex. Spirals shattered outward like glass, dissolving into harmless black dust that the wind carried away. The ribbon withered and crumbled to ash.
For a moment the rooftop was silent except for Zain's heavy breathing.

Zain dropped the pipe, flexing his hand. The burn on his wrist was already gone. He checked his uniform—still clean thanks to the quick swap in inventory. The rooftop looked normal again. No one below would ever know how close the school had come to becoming a nightmare of endless twisting flesh.
He jogged back downstairs, forcing his breathing to steady. When he reached the takoyaki stall the girls were exactly where he left them, trays nearly empty, faces lit with easy laughter. Sawako spotted him first. Relief flooded her eyes.
"Zain-kun! You were longer than two minutes…"
He slid onto the bench beside her, grabbing the last spicy takoyaki before Taiga could claim it. "Sorry, phone was buried under my bag. But hey—crisis averted. Now where's my share?"
Hori studied him a second too long, but eventually shrugged and passed him the tray. "You're weirdly lucky, you know that?"
Taiga stole the piece anyway. "Tch. Whatever."
Sawako leaned in slightly, offering him one of hers with her chopsticks. "Here. It's still warm."
Their fingers brushed as he accepted it. The simple gesture sent warmth through his chest that had nothing to do with the system.
[Sawako Affection +11% – Current: 92% – "I feel safe when he's here…"]
[Hori Affection +5% – Hidden Flag: "He's hiding something… but I kind of want to know"]
Chika and Yotsuba started a sauce-drawing contest on the bench. Kaguya watched Zain with new interest, as if she sensed the change in him. The sun dipped lower, painting everything in warm gold and soft pink.
Zain ate, joked, and let the girls' voices wash over him. But when he glanced up, the sky had taken on the faintest crimson tint along the horizon—like the edge of an eclipse creeping closer.
He smiled wider, hiding the chill in his spine behind another bite of takoyaki.
Two threats down. Harem affection skyrocketing. Powers stacking faster than I can keep up. Whatever's coming next… I'll be ready.
For now, the only spiral he cared about was the one forming in his chest every time Sawako smiled at him like that. The rest of the world could twist and burn. His paradise was right here.
