Chapter 1 - The day the world went silent

The first thing Noah Vale noticed when he woke up was the silence.

Not the peaceful kind.

Not the quiet you hear early in the morning before the city wakes.

This silence felt… wrong.

No car horns.

No distant conversations.

No barking dogs.

Nothing.

Noah slowly opened his eyes, staring at the ceiling of his small apartment.

For a moment, he thought the power was out. The room was dim, gray light filtering through the curtains.

He rubbed his face and reached for his phone on the bedside table.

No notifications.

No messages.

No signal.

"That's strange…" he muttered.

The internet never disappeared in the city. Even during storms, there was always at least one bar.

Noah sat up in bed and stretched, trying to shake the strange feeling crawling up his spine.

Something felt off.

The air felt heavy.

Like the world was holding its breath.

He walked toward the window and pulled the curtain aside.

Then he froze.

The street below his apartment building was empty.

Completely empty.

No cars.

No people.

No movement.

Normally, the road outside his building was packed with morning traffic. Office workers rushing to work, students walking to school, street vendors shouting to attract customers.

But now?

Nothing.

Just abandoned vehicles sitting quietly in the middle of the road.

Noah frowned.

"Did something happen?"

He quickly unlocked his phone again and opened social media.

No updates.

News apps refused to load.

Messages wouldn't send.

The signal icon flickered before disappearing completely.

"No signal at all…?"

A cold feeling crept into his stomach.

Noah grabbed a shirt from the chair and quickly put it on.

Maybe there was some kind of citywide blackout.

Or maybe the cell towers were down.

That had to be it.

But as he walked toward the apartment door, something else caught his attention.

The smell.

A strange metallic smell drifted through the air.

Like rust.

Or blood.

Noah frowned and opened the door.

The hallway outside his apartment was dark.

One of the overhead lights flickered weakly.

"Hello?" Noah called out.

His voice echoed down the empty hallway.

No answer.

He stepped out slowly.

Normally his neighbors were noisy. The old couple next door argued almost every morning.

But today?

Their door was wide open.

Noah hesitated.

"Mr. and Mrs. Clark?"

Still no answer.

The smell was stronger now.

His heart began beating faster as he slowly walked toward the open door.

Something inside him screamed that he shouldn't look.

But curiosity pushed him forward.

Noah reached the doorway and glanced inside.

The living room was a mess.

Furniture knocked over.

The television shattered on the floor.

And on the wall…

Dark red streaks covered the wallpaper.

Blood.

A lot of it.

Noah staggered back.

"What the hell…"

He quickly turned away, his stomach twisting.

Something terrible had happened here.

But where were the bodies?

Where were the people?

Noah ran down the stairs instead of using the elevator.

Each step echoed loudly through the silent building.

The front door stood open.

Outside, the city looked like a ghost town.

Cars were stopped in the middle of the road.

One of them had its driver-side door hanging open.

A bicycle lay on the sidewalk.

A shoe sat alone near the bus stop.

Like people had just… vanished.

Noah stepped outside slowly.

"Hello?" he shouted.

His voice echoed down the empty street.

Still nothing.

Then he heard it.

A low growling sound.

Noah froze.

The sound came from behind one of the parked cars.

Something moved.

A dark shape slowly crawled into view.

At first Noah thought it was a dog.

But as the creature stepped into the light…

His blood ran cold.

It used to be human.

Its skin was gray and cracked like dried clay.

Its arms were unnaturally long, fingers ending in jagged claws.

Its mouth stretched too wide across its face, filled with rows of sharp teeth.

Dark veins pulsed beneath its skin.

Its eyes glowed a deep, unnatural red.

Noah couldn't breathe.

The creature tilted its head slightly as it stared at him.

Then it let out a low growl.

"No… no… this isn't real," Noah whispered.

His legs refused to move.

The creature began walking toward him slowly.

Its movements were jerky, unnatural.

Like a puppet controlled by invisible strings.

Noah's heart pounded violently in his chest.

Run.

His mind screamed at him to run.

But his body remained frozen.

The creature stopped a few feet away from him.

Its glowing eyes locked onto his.

For several long seconds, neither of them moved.

Then something unexpected happened.

The creature slowly lowered its head.

And knelt.

Noah blinked.

"…What?"

The monster stayed kneeling.

Like a servant before a king.

Noah's brain struggled to understand what he was seeing.

"That… doesn't make sense."

Suddenly another growl echoed down the street.

Then another.

And another.

Noah's heart skipped a beat.

More shapes began emerging from between the buildings.

From alleyways.

From abandoned cars.

Dozens of creatures.

All of them looked like twisted versions of humans.

Some had multiple limbs.

Others dragged broken bodies across the ground.

One of them had a head that split open like a flower filled with teeth.

They slowly surrounded Noah.

His breathing became shaky.

"I'm… dead," he whispered.

There was no way he could escape this.

Not against this many monsters.

The creatures moved closer.

Closer.

Until they formed a circle around him.

Noah clenched his fists, preparing for the worst.

But the attack never came.

Instead…

One by one…

The monsters began kneeling.

The street filled with the sound of bodies dropping to the ground.

Dozens of creatures bowing their heads.

Facing Noah.

The sight made his skin crawl.

"Why…?" he whispered.

One of the monsters slowly lifted its head.

Its mouth opened.

For a moment Noah thought it would scream.

But instead…

A broken voice came out.

A voice that sounded painfully human.

"…Noah…"

His heart nearly stopped.

The monster spoke again.

Its voice cracked and distorted, like vocal cords that had forgotten how to work.

"…You… finally woke up…"

Noah felt the world spin around him.

"How… do you know my name?"

The creature slowly crawled closer.

Then it whispered something that made Noah's blood turn to ice.

"Because…"

It smiled.

"…you are the reason we exist."

The ground beneath Noah's feet trembled.

And somewhere far away in the city…

Something enormous woke up.
