Chapter 1 - THE QUIET BEFORE

In the humble and peaceful city of Eldermere, where cobblestone streets curved gently beneath tall oak trees and warm lanterns glowed softly at dusk, there lived a family known quietly by many — the Richardsons.

Eldermere was the kind of place where neighbors greeted each other by name, where morning mist rolled lazily over rooftops, and where the air carried the scent of rain and wildflowers. Some said strange things happened here — things supernatural folk whispered about as myths — but most simply enjoyed the calm rhythm of life.

The Richardson family lived on Willowbrook Lane, a lovely part of the city beside a narrow stream where willow branches dipped into the water like green ribbons. Small cottages lined the street, each with blooming gardens and painted shutters. It was beautiful and peaceful, though not a place of wealth — just comfort, warmth, and quiet charm.

There was Mr Daniel Richardson, thoughtful and steady, and Mrs Olivia Richardson, kind but strong in spirit. They had three children: Seylah, the eldest daughter with a playful sharpness; Alexa, the second girl, gentle and observant; and little Tyler, the youngest, whose laughter filled the house like sunlight.

Daniel and Olivia were known for their deep knowledge of things most people called myths — stories of strange happenings and unexplained events — yet they carefully kept certain truths hidden from their children, allowing them to grow in innocent wonder.

That evening, the family sat together at the dining table, plates filled, voices lively, and laughter echoing softly through the house.

Tyler grinned, swinging his legs. "Mum, can I have more potatoes? I think I'm still hungry."

Olivia smiled. "Still? Tyler, you've had two servings."

"That was before," he said seriously. "Now I'm hungry again."

Seylah laughed. "He's turning into a walking stomach."

Daniel chuckled as he passed the bowl. "Here you go, Tyler. Growing boy."

Alexa smiled faintly, listening as they talked.

Seylah leaned back in her chair. "Did you hear Mrs Carter shouting this morning? I swear she was arguing with her garden again."

Tyler giggled. "Maybe the flowers talked back."

"Wouldn't surprise me," Daniel said with a grin.

They laughed together, the warmth of the moment wrapping around them.

After a quiet pause, Alexa spoke softly.

"Mum… would it be okay if I skipped school for the rest of the year?"

The laughter stopped.

Olivia blinked, startled. "Alexa… why would you ask that?"

Seylah burst out laughing. "Oh wow. Someone's scared of school. What is it — homework too hard?"

Alexa frowned. "I'm not scared."

"Sure you're not," Seylah teased. "Sounds like something a scaredy cat would say."

"Seylah," Olivia said gently, "stop."

But Seylah smirked. "Come on, Mum — she wants to quit school."

Alexa's voice tightened. "Just leave me alone."

"Or what?" Seylah said, laughing.

Alexa pushed her chair back. "I said stop."

The tension rose quickly.

"Enough," Daniel said sharply, his voice firm as he stood. "I've been watching you two. Seylah, take Tyler upstairs."

Seylah sighed dramatically. "Fine. Come on, Tyler."

Tyler looked confused. "Are they fighting?"

"Just go," Daniel said calmly.

They left, footsteps fading up the stairs.

Daniel looked at Olivia and Alexa. "I'll give you both some privacy," he said gently before stepping away.

Silence settled over the room.

Olivia moved closer. "Alexa, talk to me. Why did you ask that?"

Alexa stared down at her hands, mumbling softly, hesitant.

"Sweetheart," Olivia said kindly, "you can tell me."

Alexa took a breath. "I've been bullied… thirty-eight times… minus one."

Olivia frowned slightly. "Minus one?"

"I miscounted once," Alexa said quietly. "It's Kira… and her friends — Lila, Tiphny, and Tabitha. They keep picking on me. They call me names, push me… they even tried to flush my face in the toilet."

Olivia froze, shock filling her eyes. "Alexa…"

"I didn't want to say anything," Alexa whispered.

Olivia stood abruptly. "I'm going to report this to the principal tomorrow."

"No!" Alexa said quickly, panic in her voice. "Please don't. It'll only make it worse. As long as Kira, Lila, Tiphny, and Tabitha are there, nothing will change. It's better if I just miss school."

Olivia paused, thinking carefully, then nodded slowly. "Alright. I won't report them."

Alexa exhaled softly.

"But I will warn them personally," Olivia added firmly. "And you are not missing school. No matter what."

Alexa tried to speak. "Mum, I—"

"It's sealed," Olivia said gently but decisively, standing up. "We will handle this."

She walked out of the room.

Alexa remained at the table, the quiet pressing in around her. Outside, the willow branches swayed softly in the evening breeze, as if whispering secrets only the night could hear.
