Chapter 1 - PROLOGUE: THE SILENT COMMUNION

St. Jude's Cathedral - Bell Tower Tuesday, 4:45 PM

High above the sprawling, manicured campus of St. Jude's Academy, the air was freezing.

Cantor Silas stood in the shadowy belfry of the cathedral, his breath pluming in the cold. He wore the traditional heavy black vestments of a priest, but beneath the collar, his clothing was lined with military-grade acoustic dampening foam.

He stepped up to the edge of the stone archway and looked down at the town below. Through the stained-glass windows of the cathedral beneath his feet, he could hear the faint, echoing voice of the local priest finishing the Tuesday evening mass. Just beyond the church grounds, a small funeral was taking place in the parish cemetery.

Silas checked his watch. It was time.

He turned away from the edge and walked towards the center of the belfry. The massive bronze bells that had hung there for a century were gone. In their place stood a sleek, matte-black pillar of technology engineered by Aeterna Biosciences. It looked like a massive, mechanical tuning fork, wired into a glowing server rack humming in the dark.

This was the Acoustic Cipher.

Silas pulled a specialized Aeterna tablet from his robes. The screen glowed with biometric data. Below him, in the pews and out in the town, hundreds of parishioners had taken communion over the last week. They had consumed the Host—wafers secretly laced with the dormant Vesper Strain. The spores were anchored to their brain stems, sleeping, waiting for the call.

Silas tapped the screen. A prompt appeared: INITIATE BAPTISM PROTOCOL?

"For a pure, sinless flock," Silas whispered.

He pressed Confirm .
