Chapter 15 - Episode 15 - Those Who Stay Quiet

Scene — Night, Dorm Courtyard

The courtyard lies under a pale wash of moonlight.

Crickets hum in the grass. A soft wind stirs the leaves, carrying faint traces of sweat and rain.

Knight sits on the edge of the fountain, hoodie half-zipped, phone in hand. The screen glows — blank chat window.

Airi's name hovers at the top.

He types something.

Deletes it.

Types again.

"Sorry about before."

His thumb lingers over the send button... but he locks the screen instead, staring at the reflection of the courtyard lights in the water.

The silence feels heavy, but not empty — more like it's waiting for something unspoken to surface.

Scene — Gym Balcony, Later That Night

The gym below is dark except for the single emergency light near center court.

Hunter sits on the balcony steps, arms resting on his knees, eyes on the faint shine of the floor below.

Maxwell walks in quietly, the door creaking shut behind him.

He leans on the railing beside him, not saying anything at first.

"You ever feel like we talk too much when we shouldn't," Hunter murmurs, "and stay quiet when it matters?"

Maxwell chuckles softly. "All the time."

Hunter glances up. "You think Knight's still pissed?"

"He's not," Maxwell says, eyes still on the floor. "He's just tired. Same as you."

A pause. The sound of the wind slips through the vents.

Hunter leans back against the railing. "You didn't have to do that, you know. Knock us both down like that."

Maxwell smirks faintly. "Didn't have to. Needed to."

Hunter laughs once — dry, but honest. "Guess I should thank you."

Maxwell shrugs. "Don't. Just don't make me do it again."

Scene — Classroom, Morning

The next day feels softer.

Rain streaks down the windowpanes. The hum of the heater fills the empty classroom.

Airi sits near the window, scribbling in her notebook — but her pen pauses when Knight enters quietly.

He stands near the door for a second, unsure if he should say anything. Then, slowly, he walks to the seat beside her.

She looks up, eyes calm but distant. "Didn't think you'd come."

Knight sits down, resting his arms on the desk. "Didn't think I'd get the chance."

Airi doesn't respond immediately. The rain outside takes over the silence.

Finally, she exhales softly. "You don't have to say anything."

"I know," Knight says. "But I want to."

His words hang there — hesitant, unfinished — before she closes her notebook gently.

"Then don't rush it," she says quietly. "You always try to fix things too fast."

He looks at her for a long moment. Then nods, almost to himself.

The tension between them doesn't fade — it just... settles.

Not gone, but gentler.

Scene — Gym, Afternoon

The team runs light drills. The atmosphere feels different — subdued, more aware.

Knight and Hunter move in sync, their passes cleaner, timing sharper. Still, their eyes occasionally meet and then slide away — not from anger, but from memory.

Coach Rintaro claps once. "Better. You're learning."

Maxwell grabs a rebound, tossing it to Ryo with a small grin. "Feels like we actually know what we're doing again."

Hunter smirks. "Don't jinx it."

The sound of sneakers, bouncing balls, and low laughter fills the court.

That familiar rhythm returns — not perfect, but steady.

And somewhere in that rhythm, quiet understanding begins to take root again.

Scene — Cafeteria Balcony, Evening

Mei leans against the railing, paper cup in hand, watching the last colors of daylight fade into violet.

Maxwell walks up beside her, tray balanced in one hand — a half-empty drink, untouched food.

"You don't eat much after games, do you?" she asks.

He shrugs, leaning next to her. "Guess I like quiet more than food sometimes."

She smiles faintly. "You talk like the silence's your friend."

He thinks about it, then nods. "Maybe it is."

They stand there, side by side, not speaking for a while.

The wind carries faint echoes from the gym — the muffled thump of a ball, laughter, the hum of a vending machine.

Mei finally says, "You're different on the court. Calmer. It's strange."

Maxwell glances at her, amused. "That's what everyone keeps saying."

"Maybe they're right," she says, eyes on the horizon. "You make people slow down just by being there."

He doesn't respond, but the corner of his mouth softens.

For a moment, it feels like everything — the noise, the tension, the doubt — quiets into something peaceful.

Scene — Dorm Hallway, Night

Knight walks down the dim corridor, the lights humming overhead.

He stops at Hunter's door, hesitates, then knocks once.

The door opens. Hunter looks surprised but not annoyed.

Knight rubs the back of his neck. "We good?"

Hunter raises a brow. "You mean after you almost shoved me into the bench?"

Knight smirks. "That one."

Hunter stares for a second, then laughs — short, real. "Yeah. We're good."

Knight nods. "Cool."

A pause. Then, before he turns to leave, Hunter says, "Hey — next game, don't overthink it. Just play."

Knight looks back, the faintest smile tugging at his lips. "You too."

Scene — Rooftop, Late Night

The sky is clear tonight — a wide stretch of indigo scattered with stars.

Maxwell leans against the railing, phone in his pocket, jacket collar up.

Mei's voice echoes faintly in his head: You make people slow down.

He breathes out, slow, steady — watching the lights below shimmer in the quiet distance.

Behind him, the faint hum of a basketball bouncing rises from somewhere below, rhythmic and soft.

It's the sound of movement — of things still in motion, even after everything's been said and done.

The sound of those who stay quiet... and keep moving forward.
