Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: Encounter with Team Rocket

As the saying goes, one man's joy is another man's sorrow. While Frogadier and Ralts were having the time of their lives, the low-level Pokémon along the trail were absolutely miserable.

Can anyone relate?! I was just minding my own business, walking down the road, when suddenly two blue devils popped out of nowhere and laid into me!

Fortunately, Kai was there to clean up after the two little troublemakers. He used his Viridian Power to heal the wild Pokémon and soothed their ruffled feathers with plenty of food.

Watching his two partners still eager to rush forward, Kai wiped a bead of sweat from his forehead. "Why are these two so hyped up today?"

What he didn't realize was that Frogadier's desire to be a true shinobi had intensified tenfold after evolving. With his type advantage making battles feel like a breeze, he was practically overflowing with energy. As for Ralts, the little one simply thought the whole thing was a grand game.

Kai shook his head. "Never mind. They aren't hitting too hard, and at least the wild Pokémon are getting a free meal out of it. Let them be."

"...No, no more. I'm going to be drained dry at this rate. You two, take a break!"

Kai slumped to the ground, panting heavily. His Viridian energy was almost completely depleted. On the bright side, the two little ones had gained a massive amount of experience.

Looking at their stats, Kai's gaze lingered on Ralts. Is it because she's a Shiny that she's taking longer to evolve? Never mind, I'm too hungry to think about it.

Finding a clear spot, Kai pulled some Pokéblocks from his backpack and called Ralts and Frogadier over to eat. Then, he set up his cooking gear. Kai's culinary skills were top-tier, a talent he had honed since he was a kid. Before long, a pot of steaming food began to emit an irresistible aroma.

As a gentle breeze carried the scent into the woods, Kai took a hearty bite. "So fragrant... I really am a genius!"

Just as the trio was enjoying their meal, a rustling sound came from the nearby bushes.

A group of wild Pokémon emerged, drawn by the smell. Kai looked closely—sure enough, more than half of them had been beaten up by Frogadier and Ralts earlier.

Seeing them hovering at the edge of the clearing, wanting to approach but clearly terrified of the "blue devils," Kai waved them over. "Come on, it's okay. I have plenty of Pokémon food."

Since his own team usually ate specialized Pokéblocks, he had a surplus of standard food. He poured out a large portion for the wild group. "Eat up, everyone."

With that, he went back to his own dinner. After a short rest and a warm farewell to the local Pokémon, Kai and his team continued their trek.

By the time they reached the mouth of a large cave, the sky was painted in brilliant shades of orange and red. The setting sun cast a golden glow over the landscape, and a cool breeze made the evening air comfortable.

As the light began to fade, Kai looked at the dark cavern ahead and cautioned his partners. "Stay sharp once we go in, okay?"

He pulled out a heavy-duty flashlight. Maybe I should catch a Charmander or something, he mused. A living torch would make cave exploration a lot easier. He shook off the thought and stepped inside.

Frogadier took point, while Ralts—looking a bit spooked by the dark—perched herself on Kai's head, gripping his hair tightly for security. Their footsteps were nearly silent; Kai was emitting a steady pulse of Viridian Power, which helped them move through the shadows without alarming the resident Zubat and Golbat.

Suddenly, Kai stopped dead. He signaled Frogadier to wait. Frogadier turned back, looking confused. Kai made a "shush" gesture, his brow furrowed as he focused his senses.

Through his Viridian Power, he had just sensed a Pokémon in a nearby side-chamber. It was in terrible condition and radiating intense fear.

Knowing how dangerous the wilderness could be, Kai didn't rush in blindly. He dimmed his flashlight to its lowest setting and crept toward the source of the distress.

When he reached the mouth of the side-cave and peered inside, his blood ran cold. Several men in black Team Rocket uniforms were standing over a row of iron cages. The Pokémon inside were covered in shocking wounds.

Damn it, Kai thought, his jaw tightening as he clenched his fists. I guess not everyone in Team Rocket is like Jessie and James.

"Let's observe first," he whispered to Frogadier. To save the Pokémon, he had to make sure they didn't get themselves captured as well.

There were three grunts and only three Pokémon out—all around Level 18, with the strongest being Level 21. How did they capture so many with such weak Pokémon? Kai wondered.

"Captain, everything's handled. We're ready to pull out," one grunt said.

"Good. Don't screw this up," the leader replied. "If we mess up the hand-off, we're all dead."

The third grunt scoffed. "If something goes wrong, it's the organization's fault for giving us these useless Pokémon to work with." He looked at their own Pokémon with disdain.

"Let's go grab the gear we hid outside and get ready to move," the leader ordered. He began walking toward the cave exit—directly toward Kai's hiding spot.

Kai quickly pulled Frogadier behind a large rock in the shadows. He sent a mental command to his partner: Frogadier, when they pass us and their backs are turned, use Quick Attack to knock them out. Aim for the people, not the Pokémon.

Frogadier nodded solemnly. Surprise was the bread and butter of a ninja.

The sound of boots on stone grew louder. Kai held his breath, his heart hammering against his ribs. Back when he was doing research with Professor Oak, he never had to deal with this kind of danger. Oak was so powerful that no one in their right mind would ever bother him.

The three Rocket grunts marched past the rock. Seizing the opening, Frogadier lunged from the shadows like a blue streak of lightning.
