Chapter 1 - A Warm Evening With You

The sun was slowly setting behind the hills when Arjun reached the small park near the river. The sky had turned soft orange, and the cool evening breeze moved gently through the trees. He looked at his phone again.

"Where are you?" he texted.

Just then he heard a familiar voice behind him.

"Looking for someone?"

Arjun turned around quickly and smiled. It was Maya. She was wearing a light blue dress and her long hair moved softly in the wind.

"You scared me," Arjun said, laughing.

"Good. You were too busy staring at your phone," Maya replied playfully.

They had been dating for almost a year, but every time they met, Arjun still felt the same excitement he felt on their first date. Maya walked toward him and gently tapped his arm.

"So, what's the plan today?" she asked.

"I thought we could walk near the river. It's quiet there," Arjun said.

"Perfect," Maya nodded.

They started walking along the river path. The water reflected the orange sky like a beautiful painting. Birds were flying back to their nests, and the air felt peaceful.

For a while they walked silently.

Maya finally said, "You're quiet today."

"I was just thinking," Arjun replied.

"About what?"

"About how lucky I am."

Maya smiled softly. "Lucky? Why?"

"Because I get to walk beside the most amazing girl I know."

Maya laughed. "You're trying to impress me again."

"Do I need to?"

"Maybe a little," she teased.

They sat down on a wooden bench near the river. The evening light made everything look warm and golden.

Maya looked at the water and sighed happily.

"I love this place," she said. "It feels like the world slows down here."

Arjun looked at her instead of the river.

He always thought Maya looked most beautiful when she was relaxed like this—her eyes calm, her smile natural.

"What?" Maya asked when she noticed him staring.

"Nothing," Arjun said. "Just looking."

"At what?"

"You."

Maya shook her head with a shy smile.

"You're impossible."

The wind became slightly cooler. Maya rubbed her arms.

"Cold?" Arjun asked.

"A little."

Without saying anything, he took off his jacket and gently placed it around her shoulders.

"Thank you," Maya said softly.

She leaned slightly closer to him on the bench.

For a few moments they simply watched the river flow.

Then Maya said quietly, "Do you remember our first meeting?"

"Of course," Arjun laughed. "You spilled coffee on my notebook."

"Hey! That was an accident."

"Maybe," he said with a smile. "But I'm glad it happened."

"Why?"

"Because that's how I met you."

Maya looked at him for a long moment.

"You know something?" she said.

"What?"

"That day I was really nervous."

"You? Nervous?"

"Yes. Because I thought you were cute."

Arjun laughed in surprise.

"You never told me that."

"I'm telling you now."

The sky slowly turned darker as the sun disappeared completely. Small lights from nearby houses reflected on the water.

Maya looked up at the first stars appearing in the sky.

"Look," she said. "The stars are coming out."

Arjun leaned back and followed her gaze.

"Beautiful," he said.

But he wasn't really looking at the stars.

He was looking at Maya again.

She noticed and nudged him lightly.

"Stop staring."

"I can't help it."

Maya smiled and rested her head gently on his shoulder.

The moment felt calm and warm.

Arjun could hear the quiet sound of the river and feel Maya's soft hair against his cheek.

"Arjun," she said quietly.

"Yes?"

"I'm really happy right now."

"Me too."

She looked up at him again.

"Promise me something."

"What?"

"That we'll always make time for moments like this."

Arjun nodded.

"I promise."

A gentle silence surrounded them again.

After a while Maya stood up and held out her hand.

"Come on."

"Where?"

"Let's walk a little more."

Arjun took her hand and stood up.

Her hand felt warm in his.

They walked slowly along the path, the night air fresh and peaceful. Streetlights cast soft circles of light on the ground.

Maya spun playfully once while walking.

"You're in a good mood," Arjun said.

"I am," she replied.

"Why?"

"Because I'm with you."

Arjun smiled.

"Good answer."

They reached a small wooden bridge that crossed the river.

Maya stopped in the middle and leaned on the railing.

The water below moved slowly, reflecting the moonlight now rising in the sky.

"This view is amazing," she whispered.

Arjun stood beside her.

"Yes," he said softly.

Maya turned toward him.

For a moment they simply looked into each other's eyes.

Then Maya stepped closer and hugged him gently.

Arjun wrapped his arms around her.

The hug felt warm and comforting, like home.

"You know," Maya said quietly, "sometimes I wish time would stop during moments like this."

"Me too," Arjun replied.

They slowly pulled apart, but their hands remained together.

The night had grown calm and peaceful around them.

Arjun looked at Maya and smiled.

"Ready to go?" he asked.

"Not yet," she said softly.

She leaned closer and rested her head against his shoulder again.

"Just one more minute."

Arjun nodded.

"Okay. One more minute."

And beneath the quiet stars and the soft sound of the river, they stood together, enjoying the simple happiness of being side by side.
