Chapter 1 - the last train home

The rain had just started when Emily stepped onto the quiet platform. The evening train was late again. She sighed and pulled her coat tighter, watching the empty tracks stretch into the fog.

"Looks like we're both stuck here."

She turned and saw a tall man holding a coffee cup and an apologetic smile.

"Seems so," Emily replied softly.

"My name's Daniel," he said, offering the second cup. "I bought two by mistake."

Emily hesitated, then took it. "Emily. And thank you."

They stood in silence at first, listening to the rain tapping on the metal roof. Slowly, the silence turned into conversation—about books, cities they dreamed of visiting, and how both of them hated waiting for trains.

Minutes turned into an hour.

"You know," Daniel said with a small laugh, "I never talk this much to strangers."

"Maybe we weren't meant to stay strangers," Emily replied.

Just then, the train lights appeared in the distance.

"Guess this is our train," Daniel said.

They boarded and sat together, still talking as if they had known each other for years. When Emily's stop arrived, she stood up reluctantly.

Emily smiled, writing something on his coffee cup with a pen.

"Only if you take the same late train tomorrow."

The doors closed and the train pulled away. Daniel looked down at the cup.

It had her number on it—and one more line.

"Some meetings are not accidents." ❤️
