Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: The Heir

Olivero Holdings held an official press conference.

Not a quiet announcement. Not a simple statement released to the media.

An event.

The kind that would be replayed on business channels for weeks.

The grand ballroom had been transformed into a sea of cameras and tailored suits. Crystal chandeliers cast white light over polished marble floors. The company crest gleamed behind the podium — gold against midnight blue.

This was not just a family matter anymore.

This was corporate history.

Nathan stood at the podium.

Mira beside him.

Not hidden. Not secret.

Visible.

Confident.

For the first time since their marriage, she was not behind him.

She was with him.

Flashes of cameras burst like lightning across the room. Reporters leaned forward, microphones angled, waiting.

Nathan adjusted the mic.

His face was calm, composed in the way only years of corporate warfare could teach a man to be. But there was something different in his posture today.

Solid.

Certain.

"My father made a promise," Nathan began, his voice steady, carrying easily across the silent room.

A promise the entire board had whispered about.

A promise that had turned into a deadline.

"If I was married before the decision date, I would assume the role of CEO."

A ripple passed through the audience.

Soft murmurs.

Eyes shifted.

Journalists glanced toward the back of the room where his father stood — immaculately dressed, expression carved from stone.

Such a large condition.

Such a personal requirement tied to corporate power.

And yet here stood the result of it.

"And today," Nathan continued, his tone deepening, "I stand here not only as the future CEO of Olivero Holdings…"

He turned his head slightly.

His gaze found Mira.

Not rehearsed.

Not forced.

Something warmer.

"…but as a husband."

The silence cracked.

Cameras erupted in flashing bursts.

A husband.

A wife.

A public confirmation.

Nathan reached for Mira's hand.

He didn't hesitate.

Didn't look to his father.

Didn't seek approval.

He simply took it.

"And as a father to be."

The words fell heavier.

Shock rippled louder this time.

A collective intake of breath.

Some gasps.

One dropped pen clattering somewhere in the front row.

Mira's fingers tightened almost imperceptibly in his. Her heartbeat was steady, though the world around her seemed to explode.

Pregnancy!

He had said it himself.

Claimed it. Announced it. No hiding now.

"My wife, Mira Olivero, will stand beside me in every chapter of this company's future," Nathan said firmly.

Not as decoration.

Not as obligation.

As a partner.

The room broke into applause.

Polite at first.

Then stronger.

Investors loved stability. Loved legacy. Loved heirs.

A married CEO. A child on the way. The Olivero name secured.

It was perfect optics.

Behind them, his father stood still.

Silent.

Watching.

Burning.

His jaw tightened almost imperceptibly.

The board had already confirmed the transition that morning. Legal documents signed. Votes cast. Press prepared.

He had maneuvered for years to shape his successor.

Had assumed Nathan would struggle.

Would hesitate.

Would fail the condition.

But Nathan had done the one thing his father hadn't fully anticipated.

He hadn't just fulfilled the requirement.

He had embraced it.

And the board loved him for it.

His father's gaze shifted to Mira.

He expected nerves.

Awkwardness.

A girl overwhelmed by power.

Instead, she stood straight.

Graceful.

Her soft pink dress modest yet elegant. Her chin lifted. Her hands steady.

She wasn't clinging to Nathan.

She wasn't shrinking beneath the scrutiny.

She met the room's attention with quiet composure.

Not arrogance.

Not fear.

Strength.

Reporters began calling out questions.

"Mrs. Olivero, how do you feel about stepping into this role?"

Mira didn't look to Nathan for permission.

She leaned slightly toward the microphone.

"I feel honored," she said, voice calm, clear. "Olivero Holdings has always stood for legacy and responsibility. I intend to uphold both."

No tremor.

No stutter.

The board members in the front row exchanged subtle glances.

Measured.

Approving.

She wasn't a liability.

She was steady.

Nathan watched her for a second longer than necessary.

Something protective flickered in his chest.

Something proud.

Behind them, his father's eyes darkened.

He had assumed she would be temporary.

Fragile.

A means to an end.

But she did not look like a temporary woman.

She looked rooted.

And for the first time since imposing that marriage condition, his father felt something unfamiliar press against his certainty.

Doubt.

Perhaps he had misjudged her.

Perhaps he had misjudged his son.

And perhaps....

He had miscalculated.
