The sunlight hit Satoru's face as morning came. He groggily woke up, running a hand through his hair before slowly standing and stretching. Sleepily making his way to the bathroom, he grabbed his toothbrush, brushed his teeth, and took a shower.
Now refreshed, he made his way downstairs, where he saw his mom already up and about, breakfast on the table.
"Good morning, Mom," he said as he sat down and took his utensils, offering a quick prayer before digging in.
"Morning, Satoru. How'd you sleep?" Yukina asked, glancing over her shoulder as she stirred something on the stove.
Satoru ate quietly for a moment, legs swinging beneath the chair as he worked through his food. He glanced up between bites, watching his mom move around the kitchen. She shifted from the stove to the counter and back again. A mother truly was the greatest multitasker ever.
"Mom," he said suddenly, looking up at her, "do you think I'll get my quirk soon?"
Yukina paused for a second before turning to face Satoru, a small smile appearing on her face.
"Maybe," she replied, her tone light. "Everyone's different. Some people bloom early, some take their time."
Satoru nodded, accepting the answer easily. "When I get mine, I wanna be really strong. Like… strong enough that I don't need anyone to save me."
She turned then, leaning against the counter as she watched him, her smile still present.
"You don't have to rush," she said. "Strength isn't just about power."
"Yeah, yeah. I know." Satoru responded.
He shoveled the last bit of food into his mouth and hopped down from the chair. "I'm gonna get ready!" he said, quickly running upstairs.
Yukina sighed softly before taking Satoru's bowl from the table and washing it in the sink.
Today was the big day, they'd finally booked an appointment with a quirk doctor to determine if Satoru's quirk would develop.
She snapped out of her thoughts when she heard hurried footsteps on the stairs.
"I'm ready, Mom," Satoru said, skidding to a stop at the bottom step.
Yukina turned, giving him a once-over. He wore a blue hoodie with a white undershirt, completed by black pants and sneakers.
"Good." She began. "You didn't mismatch your shoes this time." She said as she went for the door.
Satoru groaned. "It was one time, Mom! One time! Plus they looked kinda cool." An embarrassing red colored his cheeks.
Yukina laughed softly, pausing by the door, then gently placed a hand on his head. "Maybe they did," she said, amusement clear in her voice. "But let's try not to make it a habit, hm?" He nodded.
She gave his hair a brief ruffle before pulling her hand away and opening the door. Cool morning air and the distant sounds of traffic and early city life rushed in.
"Alright," Yukina said, stepping outside with him behind her. "Let's go before we're late."
The mother and son sat in the car moments later, the engine softly humming to life, and then they were on their way to the doctor.
…
Yukina and Satoru sat in the doctor's office. Satoru had already gone through all the necessary tests; all that was left were the results.
After what felt like hours, a tall middle-aged man with a platypus head and a white coat stepped in with a clipboard in hand. "Sorry for the wait," he said. "I had to run a few more tests to make sure what I was seeing was accurate."
Satoru's eyes widened, and he nervously shifted in his seat. "Um… is it bad?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Seeing her son so nervous, Yukina gently took his hand before turning her gaze to the doctor. "Alright, doc, what's the news?"
The doctor took a seat, letting out a soft sigh.
"According to the tests, ma'am, his biology is normal. He doesn't have the extra joint in his pinky toe, which is good. That means, structurally, there's nothing preventing a quirk from developing. However, after running every test we could, the only conclusion we've been able to reach is… something is still stopping it from appearing at this time."
Satoru blinked, processing the words slowly. "So… I can get a quirk," he said, "but it's just stuck?"
The doctor adjusted his grip on the clipboard. "That's one way to put it," he replied. "Think of it like a door that should open, but hasn't yet."
"So it's the same as late bloomer quirks?" Yukina asked.
The doctor nodded. "We'll keep monitoring him. If anything changes, headaches, sensory issues, unusual reactions, or mutations, bring him back immediately."
Yukina got up from her seat, Satoru standing with her. "Thank you, doctor. I'll be sure to keep in touch," she said, and they exited the office.
Once outside, the mother-son duo drove off, heading home.
They drove in silence for a while before the car slowly pulled to a stop in front of a bakery.
"What're we doing here, Mom? I thought we were heading home?" Satoru asked.
Yukina smiled. "We're gonna get some mochi to celebrate. The doctor said your quirk will manifest, while not now, it still will and that itself warrants celebration."
Satoru's eyes lit up. "Really? Can we get chocolate? It's my favorite." He bounced lightly in his seat.
Yukina's smile widened, seeing his usual excitement return. "Of course, just wait in the car for a minute while I get it," she said, earning an excited nod from him.
—Yukina POV—
I left a happy Satoru in the car as I went inside the bakery. Seeing as it was the weekend, it wasn't packed; a few customers sat talking and going about their day.
An older woman with slightly graying hair stood behind the counter where multiple pastries were on display.
I walked up to her with a slight smile. "Hello, I would like two servings of chocolate mochi, please."
The lady behind the counter nodded before turning around to make my order. A minute later, she came back with two bags of chocolate mochi and handed them to me.
"Thank you," I said politely and bowed, handing over the yen.
Making my way to the door, I paused as my ears picked up the conversation between three teenagers watching something on their phone.
"Look, I'm telling you, at the rate they're chasing him, the giant villain is gonna be right on this street," one of them, with jet-black hair and red eyes, said to his companion.
"Nuh uh, Kamui Woods and Death Arms are gonna stop him before he even has the chance," the blonde with whiskers responded.
"Yuh, uh!"
"Nuh, uh!"
Seeing the two of them about to get in an argument, a pink-haired girl bonked them on the head. "Knock it off, you two, we're in public," she said, massaging her temples.
Chuckling slightly at their antics, I opened the door and headed outside. If what they were saying was true, I needed to hurry back to Satoru.
Picking up my pace, I quickly ran toward the parking lot. Just as I saw the car with Satoru in it, waving at me, the ground underneath started shaking. A loud explosion sent me flying off my feet, spilling the bag of mochi.
"S-shit," I muttered, still a bit dazed from the impact. I felt something warm running down my face and dripping on the ground.
'Blood,' I thought. Shakily standing up, I saw the situation.
In front of me were the heroes Kamui Woods and Death Arms, facing off against a massive, green-gray humanoid villain with spiked muscles.
"Stop this nonsense, Abomination, before you hurt anyone else," Kamui Woods said, sending wood-like branches that coiled around the villain.
Abomination smirked before breaking free. "Keep dreaming you overgrown twig," he said, grabbing a nearby car and throwing it at the heroes.
Death Arms ran in front of his associate, catching the car and setting it down. "I'm engaging; you run interference," he said, earning a nod.
Gathering my bearings, I frantically looked around for my car, fully activating True Sight as a rush of information hit me.
My heart dropped when I finally saw it, flipped upside down, with an unconscious Satoru inside.
My legs moved on their own as I desperately ran toward the crash.
I dodged obstacles in my way, the car getting closer and closer. I was almost in range before a hulking mass of gray smashed in front of me.
"Shit! A civilian! Miss, run!" I heard Death Arms scream, seeing him and Kamui Woods heading toward me, but it was too late.
The villain woke dazed from the impact, rubbing his head before turning his gaze toward me, smirking. "Well, aren't you a pretty thing? Why don't you come with me after this and we can have some fun?"
Recoiling in disgust, I took a step back. "Not a chance, you wannabe Godzilla."
His smirk turned into a full-blown smile. "Well, that's the thing; I wasn't asking." He threw a punch toward me.
Pushing True Sight to its maximum, I saw the trajectory and ducked.
"What the?!" Abomination hissed in surprise. He lunged at me, but I dodged behind him, causing him to stumble.
"Get out of my way, you damn lizard!" I shouted, kicking him in the chest. Using the adrenaline, I gathered all my strength into my other leg and delivered a devastating kick to his groin.
His eyes widened as he fell to the floor, hollowing in pain.
Seeing my chance, I ran toward the crashed car. Finally arriving, I stopped at the door, pulling it open and seeing the unconscious Satoru.
"Satoru! Satoru! Wake up, please!" I shouted urgently, trying to unbuckle him.
Seeing no response, I frantically twisted the buckle, finally hearing a click. I quickly took hold of Satoru and pulled him out of the car.
I put my ear against his chest and felt a steady heartbeat, letting out a sigh of relief. My vision blurred for a brief second as blood ran down my nose, I had begun to feel the toll of True Sight.
"No, not now!" I muttered, dazed.
A shadow suddenly covered me. Looking up, I saw Abomination standing over me, eyes red from pain and anger.
"YOU DAMN BITCH! I'LL KILL YOU!" he roared, swinging his fist toward me.
'S-shit, I can't dodge,' I thought, vision blurring further as blood trickled down. I closed my eyes and hugged Satoru, turning my back toward the blow to shield him.
The expected impact never came. When I looked up, his fist was stopped in the air before me, as if held by some invisible force.
"Gah what now?!" Abomination roared in confusion.
But my attention wasn't on him, I looked at Satoru who had now woken up, his expression dead serious. His once pericing brown eyes now a striking glowing blue.
"Get away from my mom." An unnaturally cold voice commanded. I watched as abomination's body was pulled away from us, sending him flying into a nearby building.
My gaze then shifted to Satoru who was still in my arms, he tried to stand up only pass out once more.
My vision began blurring again as more blood started falling from nose. The adrenaline was wearing off and the mental fatigue was beginning to set in.
The last thing I saw before passing out was a hulking figure of muscle with blond hair landing infront of me and fighting abomination.
