Chapter 1 - Prologue

The Fire

The fire burned low, its embers breathing faint light into the night,

Around it sat a small circle of travelers — a scarred soldier, a merchant with weary eyes, two hunters wrapped in rough cloaks, and a bard with a cracked lute resting across his knees, A young boy leaned sleepily against his mother's shoulder,

The wind slipped through the trees, carrying the scent of ash and distant rain,

For a long time, no one spoke,

Then the bard plucked a broken string,

The note trembled in the darkness,

"Ever heard of a boy who lived in a cage larger than kingdoms?"

The soldier lifted his head,

"The cursed one?"

"The Sky Prince,"

The bard's lips curved faintly,

"Aye,"

The merchant snorted and tossed a twig into the fire,

"Every road has a story like that, A fallen prince, A broken crown, Travelers love their ghosts,"

The bard leaned closer to the flame, Firelight carved shadows across his face,

"This one isn't a ghost,"

The flames cracked softly,

"This one is true,"

————————————————————————————————————

Long ago, when the gods still walked the edges of the world, there stood a kingdom called Aurelen,

Its towers rose so high they seemed to brush the clouds, Rivers wound through its lands like silver threads, singing to the dawn,

The people called their rulers the Blessed Ones — King Edrion and Queen Lysara,

When the queen carried her first child, a visitor arrived without invitation,

The Seer of the Sunstone,

She entered the palace hall with no herald and no guards,

Her eyes shone white as lightning trapped in stone,

When she spoke, the air itself seemed to hold its breath,

"From love he shall bloom…

and by love he shall fade,

The sky will chain him,

The earth will mourn him,

The song of dawn shall end in silence,"

The words fell like distant thunder,

The boy beside the fire stirred,

"What did the king do?"

The bard watched the flames for a moment,

"What any father would,"

"He refused to believe it,"

King Edrion summoned builders from every kingdom,

Masons from the frozen north,

Engineers from the southern marshes,

Glassworkers whose craft could capture sunlight itself,

Stone rose upon stone,

Tower upon tower,

A fortress greater than any the world had ever seen,

They called it The Endless Keep,

A palace of gold and glass where nothing could harm the child,

Nothing… except love,

The soldier spat into the dust,

"Walls don't stop curses,"

"No," the bard said,

"But love makes fools of kings,"

The child was born beneath a sky streaked with dawnlight,

They named him Arvail Aurelen,

The Song of Dawn,

He grew gentle,

Curious,

A boy who loved books, music, and the scent of rain in palace gardens,

But strange things followed him,

Flowers wilted faster when he passed,

Servants who adored him slowly forgot his name,

Even the palace hounds began to look at him with puzzled eyes,

Piece by piece, memory faded around him,

Yet the boy remained kind,

Every day he asked the same question,

"Protection shouldn't cost the sky…

so why did the walls take mine?"

No one answered,

Not the priests,

Not the guards,

Not even the silent gods watching from above,

"And his parents?" the boy asked,

"They loved him," the bard said,

"Too much,"

They spent their lives watching their son grow inside the world they had built for him,

A dream of safety,

A prison of beauty,

When they died, it was not war or sickness that took them,

They simply stopped,

Like candles that had burned too long beside a window that never opened,

The wind sighed through the trees,

The fire sank lower,

Finally the soldier broke the silence,

"So the curse wins?"

The bard shook his head,

"Not yet,"

The story was only beginning,

After the king and queen were gone, the boy became ruler of Aurelen,

Beloved by his people,

Watched by the heavens,

And far from the golden towers of the Endless Keep, another name had begun to echo across the kingdoms,

A warrior princess,

Untamed as thunder,

Brave as flame,

The bard's voice dropped almost to a whisper,

They called her The Crimson Wind,

And when her path crossed the Sky Prince…

the curse awakened,

The bard leaned back from the fire,

"But that part of the tale is for another night,"

Because love like theirs did not end,

It only faded,

Slowly,

Like dawn leaving the world behind,

And somewhere beyond the hills, where the stars brushed the mountains, the wind carried a name once more,

Arvail Aurelen,

The Sky Prince,
