Chapter 6 - Chapter Six: The Thing About Proximity

The contract was signed on a Thursday.

Not in the conference room — that had been the negotiation, the lawyers' territory, the place where language got precise and intentions became enforceable. The signing happened in a smaller office, just the four of them, and it was quieter than she'd expected. A document of that weight, she'd thought, should make some kind of sound. Instead there was just the scratch of a pen and the October light coming through the windows at a low angle and Richard Hale notarizing and Elena checking each page with the careful attention of someone who had read it four times already and was reading it a fifth.

Iris signed her name the same way she always signed it — no flourish, no performance. Just her name, legible, the way her third-grade teacher had insisted on.

Voss signed across from her. She didn't watch him do it.

Afterward, Elena walked her down to the lobby and said, standing near the revolving door with the street noise bleeding in: "You negotiated well." Coming from Elena, who distributed professional compliments with the economy of someone who understood their value, this landed as the real thing.

"Thank you for the language on condition three," Iris said. "The direct billing definition. That was yours."

"The instinct was yours. I just made it airtight." Elena shook her hand — a real handshake, brief and firm. "Call me if anything feels off. Don't wait until it's already a problem."

Then she was gone, and Iris was standing in the lobby of the building alone, the signed contract in Elena's possession and a copy on its way to her email, and the street outside looked exactly as it always had, and she had just agreed to spend a year of her life as the contractual wife of a man she had known for four days.

She walked to the bus stop.

She went to work.

The first two weeks were logistical.

There was an apartment — not his, which had been condition one, but a building three blocks from his that he apparently owned in some corporate capacity that Hale had explained and she had followed well enough to be satisfied it was legitimate. The apartment was on the eleventh floor. It had two bedrooms, which she hadn't asked for but which she recognized was intentional — room for Jamie to visit, room for the arrangement to breathe.

She stood in it the first time on a Saturday morning with a single box of things she'd brought from the old place and looked at the kitchen with its clean lines and the windows with their view of the street below and the second bedroom with its bare mattress and she thought: this is real now. Not in the dramatic sense. In the plain, material sense of a thing that had moved from the conceptual to the concrete, and concrete required a different kind of attention.

She put the box down. She went back for more boxes.

Jamie helped her move on Sunday. He'd taken the news with the particular quality of attention he brought to things he needed to process carefully — quiet first, then questions, then more quiet while he organized the questions into an order that made sense to him. She'd told him as much of the truth as she could, which was: this is a business arrangement, it's protected by a legal contract, your surgery is covered, I am going in with open eyes and I need you to trust that I know what I'm doing.

He'd been quiet for a long time after that.

Then: "Does he know about the bridges thing?"

She'd blinked. "What?"

"My bridges thing. The landmark theory." Jamie moved a box of her kitchen things to the counter without being asked. "You talk about the people at the diner sometimes. Does he know that's how you think about people? That you're always figuring out why some of them become — significant. And others don't."

She looked at her brother. Twenty-three years old and a heart condition and a brain that worked like a search for underlying structure in everything it encountered.

"No," she said. "He doesn't know that yet."

Jamie considered. "Okay," he said, which was his version of: I'll trust the process but I'm keeping my eye on it.

The first public appearance was a Friday evening fundraiser, twelve days after signing.

He'd given her more than forty-eight hours notice — five days, in fact, which she noted and filed as data. The invitation had come through Hale's office with a brief summary of the event, the expected attendees, the narrative they were presenting. His assistant — a woman named Claire who communicated exclusively through precise, friendly emails — had followed up to ask if she needed anything.

She had written back: No, thank you. I have what I need.

She wore the dark green dress she'd bought three years ago for a friend's wedding and hadn't worn since. It still fit. She did her own hair. She looked at herself in the bathroom mirror of the new apartment and thought: this is the version of you that walks into rooms. You know this version. She's been here the whole time.

He met her in the lobby of the event venue — a museum, grand in the way that civic institutions are grand, the kind of grandeur designed to suggest that culture and money have always been natural companions. He was already there when she arrived. He looked at her once, with the same focused quality she'd catalogued in the conference room, and said nothing for a moment.

Then: "The green works."

She wasn't sure if it was a compliment or an observation. With him, she was beginning to understand, those were sometimes the same thing. "Thank you," she said.

He offered his arm. She took it.

And then they walked in.

The thing about proximity, she discovered, was that it was cumulative.

Not in the way she'd expected to have to manage — not the performance of it, not the public-facing part. That had come naturally, with the ease of long practice in rooms that required her to be the most composed person present. She'd held his arm and smiled at the right moments and answered questions about how they'd met with the version of the story they'd agreed on — which was, usefully, almost entirely true. We met at a diner. His father was a regular. We ran into each other again recently and things developed from there. All accurate, technically. The contract was the only omission, and the contract was nobody's business.

She'd been good at the public part. She'd expected to be good at the public part.

What she hadn't expected was the quiet parts.

The car afterward — he had a driver, which she was still adjusting to — when the event was done and the performance was over and they were just two people sitting in the back seat in the specific exhaustion that follows two hours of sustained social engagement. She'd leaned her head back against the seat. He'd looked out the window. The city moved past in its nighttime configuration.

"You didn't like the senator," he said.

She considered denying it. "No."

"You were completely professional."

"That's not the same as liking someone."

He was quiet for a moment. "He's on the board of the children's hospital endowment. The one we're trying to get the foundation into."

"I know who he is." She'd looked him up when she saw his name on the attendee list. "That doesn't change whether I like him."

"No," Voss said. "It doesn't." He paused. "I don't like him either."

She looked at him.

"But the endowment matters," he said. "So."

"So you were completely professional."

"Yes."

She thought about that. Two people in a car, post-performance, comparing notes on a man neither of them liked and both of them had been pleasant to for two hours because the work required it. There was something almost — companionable about it. Not friendship. Not yet anything with a name. But the early shape of a working understanding between people who operated similarly in rooms.

She looked back out the window.

"Your father used to come in on Tuesdays," she said. "He always ordered the same thing. Coffee, wheat toast, two eggs over medium. Never varied."

A beat. "That sounds right."

"He used to bring a newspaper. An actual paper one. He'd read the whole thing front to back while he ate, very slowly, like he was somewhere he didn't have to be anywhere else." She paused. "He was always the most relaxed person in the room. I used to think it was the diner. The atmosphere. Then I realized it was just — him. He brought that with him."

The city kept moving past the window. The driver made a turn.

"He talks about the Amber Spoon," Voss said, after a moment. "More than you'd think."

"Lou makes very good eggs."

"I think it's more than the eggs."

She didn't answer that. She didn't need to.

The car stopped at her building. She gathered her bag and reached for the door and paused, because something had occurred to her between the venue and here that she'd been turning over quietly for the last ten minutes.

"Next time," she said, "there's a pre-event briefing on attendees. Anyone on the guest list that you have a complicated history with, I should know in advance."

He looked at her. "Why?"

"Because then I can be useful," she said, "instead of just decorative."

The focused thing again. The lens finding its point.

"There's a gala in three weeks," he said. "I'll have Claire send the attendee list Monday."

"Good." She opened the door. The night air came in, cold and clean. "Goodnight, Mr. Voss."

"Goodnight, Ms. Calloway."

She got out. She went upstairs. She took off the green dress and hung it carefully and stood in the kitchen of the new apartment in the quiet of eleven PM and made a cup of tea she didn't particularly need.

She thought about the car. The senator. The newspaper and the wheat toast. The attendee list arriving Monday.

She thought: useful instead of decorative.

She thought: he didn't hesitate.

She put it somewhere safe. She was building a collection of those, small and specific, the data points that didn't have names yet but were accumulating weight.

She drank her tea.

She went to bed.
