Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The Deep-Sea Ecosystem

11:25 Hours. NOAA Regional Lab.

The room was silent as the team watched the 30-meter silhouette on the main screen. The MC remained anchored, eyes shut, his massive bulk a dark island in the flickering orange glow of the hydrothermal vents.

"The battery and tether are holding," Aris said, leaning over Elena's shoulder. "We have the resolution. Elena, move us in. I need to see the pore structure on those red channels. If we can get a macro-scan of the integument, we can prove the chemosynthetic transport."

Elena gripped the joystick, her eyes fixed on the MC's armored brow. "I told you, Aris, I'm not getting close. If he wakes up or even just shifts his weight, the displacement will hit this ROV like a truck. We're staying at the fifty-meter mark. Nothing survives in that plume anyway—if I move the ROV into that heat, the optics will melt."

11:35 Hours. Thermal Integration.

The ROV's sensors picked up the extreme temperature gradient. The MC was sitting in water that would vaporize most biological tissue, but his indigo hide seemed unaffected. The red channels along his flanks were now glowing with a solid, stable intensity, no longer flickering.

"He's essentially part of the vent now," Elena whispered. "He's not just sitting near it; he's harnessed the flow. In the future, once he moves to cooler waters, he'll probably pick up half the parasites in the Pacific, but right now, he's the only thing that can stand the heat."

11:45 Hours. The Optical Zoom.

Elena didn't move the ROV into the danger zone, but she used the high-powered optical zoom and the laser-rangefinder to bridge the gap from a safe distance.

The screen filled with a geometric landscape of the MC's flank. His "skin" wasn't smooth; it was composed of microscopic, overlapping hexagonal plates. They were reinforced with a metallic, iridescent sheen that reflected the ROV's floodlights even through the shimmering heat distortion of the vent.

"The pores are open," Aris said, satisfied with the digital zoom. "He's literally drinking the mineral-rich water through his skin. It's an active transport system. He's filtering the iron and sulfur directly into his capillaries."

11:55 Hours. The Silhouette.

Elena kept the ROV at the edge of the light's reach. In the pitch black of the San Nicolas Basin, the MC was a terrifying silhouette. The only light came from the vents and the intense, steady crimson of the channels running the length of his body.

"The recharge looks complete," Elena said, watching the steady pulsing of his gill-slits. "The thermal intake has plateaued. He's about to wake up."

12:00 Hours. The Decision.

Aris checked the pressure sensors again. "Elena, we need that physical sample before he detaches. If he leaves this vent, we might never get another chance to see how he handles this level of thermal energy. Move in. Just for a scrape."

Elena didn't answer for a long moment. She looked at the MC's closed eyes and the way his square claws were still deeply buried in the basalt. "One scrape. I'm staying as far back as the manipulator arm allows."

She nudged the thrusters, and the ROV began to creep toward the 30-meter mountain of indigo and red.
