Chapter 21 - The Message

Three years later.

Life had a strange way of moving forward quietly.

No dramatic announcements. No warning bells.Just time, gently carrying you into a new version of yourself.

University was almost over. The campus that once felt overwhelming had become a second home. Lectures, late-night study sessions, coffee runs, and laughter with friends had shaped the last few years of my life.

And through it all, he had been there.

My partner.My best friend.My fiancé.

We had grown together in ways I never imagined. Through stress, family challenges, exams, and the uncertainty of adulthood, our relationship had deepened into something steady and real.

The kind of love that felt safe.

Peaceful.

Grounded.

The girl who once chased perfection had learned to breathe.

To trust.

To rest.

And for a while, it felt like life had finally settled.

Until the message arrived.

It was late at night when my phone buzzed.

I had been lying on my bed, scrolling through old photos from campus events, smiling at memories that already felt nostalgic.

The screen lit up with a notification.

An unknown number.

At first, I almost ignored it.

But something something deep in my chest made me open it.

The message was short.

Too short.

Just two words.

"Hey Manda."

My stomach tightened.

No one called me that anymore in that tone.

My friends called me Amanda.

My fiancé had a dozen nicknames for me.

But this…

This felt like a ghost stepping into the room.

Then the second message appeared.

"It's Krow."

The air in my room suddenly felt heavier.

My heartbeat quickened as memories rushed back memories I had buried deep beneath years of growth and healing.

Krow.

The person who once knew my chaos better than anyone.

The person who had seen me at my worst.

The person connected to the darkest version of myself.

My fingers trembled as another message appeared.

"I'm in town."

My chest tightened.

"We should talk."

My mind began to spin.

Why now?

After all these years?

After everything I had rebuilt?

I stared at the screen, my heart pounding in my ears.

And for the first time in years, something old stirred inside me.

Not peace.

Not calm.

The storm.

The same storm I thought I had defeated.

My thoughts began racing.

What if he brings up the past? What if he ruins everything? What if…

I quickly locked my phone and placed it face down on my bed.

My breathing had grown shallow.

This wasn't supposed to affect me anymore.

I had grown.

I had healed.

I had moved on.

So why did it feel like the past had just kicked the door open?

The next morning, my fiancé noticed immediately.

"You're quiet today," he said gently while we walked across campus.

I forced a smile.

"Just tired."

But the truth was much darker.

The message had followed me into the morning.

Into my thoughts.

Into every quiet moment.

By evening, another text appeared.

"You never answered."

Then another.

"I guess you're still running."

That sentence hit something deep inside me.

Running.

That was the word people used when they didn't understand survival.

My hands clenched around the phone.

And suddenly, the peace I had built over years felt fragile.

Like glass.

One wrong move and it could shatter.

I knew one thing for certain.

If my fiancé ever found out Krow had reached out…

Everything could change.

And for the first time in years, I felt myself slipping.

Not completely.

Not yet.

But enough to know something dangerous had returned.

The storm wasn't gone.

It had only been sleeping.

And Krow had just woken it up.
