Chapter 2 - We are twins we can not be separated

The grand hall of Nocturne Academy was filled with the low hum of voices as new and returning students whispered among themselves. The towering obsidian pillars that lined the hall reflected the flickering light of enchanted chandeliers above, casting long shadows across the polished black floor.

Students from different supernatural bloodlines sat side by side, vampires, witches, sirens, mermaids, fairies, and creatures far stranger than the eye could immediately recognize.

The chatter continued until a powerful voice echoed through the hall.

"I welcome new and old students to Nocturne Academy, where power, magic, and fate collide."

The Headmaster's voice rang out like a bell, sharp and commanding. Instantly, the entire hall fell silent.

All eyes turned toward the tall man standing at the elevated podium.

He had long silver hair that fell neatly behind his shoulders, and his dark sweater and a dark trowser

"My name is Alaric Valemont," he continued calmly. "For the new students, I will be your headmaster for the next four years, you will be staying in Nocturne… that is, if you obey the rules and pass all your courses."

A ripple of surprise passed through the students, though most of them tried to keep their composure.

Some exchanged nervous glances.

Others straightened their backs.

"In Nocturne Academy, future leaders are trained and shaped," Alaric continued, his sharp eyes sweeping across the crowd. "Your resilience and capabilities will be tested. You must prove that you are worthy of the positions that will eventually be assigned to you."

He paused, allowing his words to sink in.

"The juniors will pass through what we call The Initiation Ritual. This process will test your survival skills, one of the most basic abilities every magical creature must possess."

A few students shifted uneasily.

"This ritual will determine whether you are worthy to remain in Nocturne Academy… or whether you will be cut off."

A heavy silence settled in the hall.

"The students who survive and successfully pass their courses will, by the end of their fourth year, be assigned to serve under a Lord. These are Lords who do not yet possess a team."

He clasped his hands behind his back.

"However, mind this carefully, a Lord may select you and still cut you off if you underperform before the end of your four-year course."

A whisper drifted through the rows of students.

"I would love to be a Court Enchantress," a girl with platinum silver hair whispered excitedly to her neighbor. "I heard it's a position with little stress… and less coveted."

A cheerful voice spoke up again.

"Hey, I'm Aurora. What's your name?"

She was speaking to the girl beside her.

But the girl did not answer.

Her name was Calypsera.

She simply stared at Aurora silently, her large emerald green eyes calm yet distant. Her long dark hair cascaded down her back like flowing ink, and there was something hauntingly beautiful about her stillness.

Aurora blinked.

She waited.

Still no answer.

She tilted her head slightly, confused.

But Aurora was not someone who gave up easily.

"So… what position would you want?" she asked again.

This time, someone else spoke.

Nesera.

She had been sitting on Calypsera's other side, listening intently to the Headmaster while wearing a bright smile. Since Alaric began speaking, she had been practically glowing with excitement.

She had already decided.

She would dominate this academy.

She would make a name for herself.

But the new girl beside them had been distracting her by speaking to the one person who would never answer.

Nesera finally turned toward Aurora.

"She doesn't need any position," Nesera said

casually.

Aurora blinked.

"Why?"

"Because she's a mute. She cannot speak."

Aurora gasped softly.

"Oh…"

Nesera continued smoothly.

"My name is Nesera Ondine, and this is my twin sister Calypsera."

She smiled politely.

"She won't be competing. She's my shadow."

Nesera gently placed a hand on Calypsera's shoulder.

"We are one. We will compete together."

Aurora frowned slightly.

Not because Calypsera was mute.

But because of what Nesera had just said.

Being mute didn't mean someone couldn't compete.

And it definitely didn't mean they had to live in someone else's shadow.

But Aurora decided to hold her thoughts for now.

The Headmaster's voice rose again.

"You all know why you are here."

"Because of the Ebon Concord."

The name alone carried weight.

"Because of that agreement, even if you are not chosen by a Lord, you still have the chance to gain a position within the supernatural courts."

A few relieved whispers spread through the room.

"But for those who fail…" Alaric's voice hardened slightly.

"You will be sent back home."

"No second chances."

A chill ran through many of the students.

"Your names will now be called together with your roommates and you will be assigned a room," he continued.

"You will stay together tonight before the initiation ritual tomorrow. If both you and your roommate pass the ritual, you may keep your room."

"But if one of you fails…"

He paused.

"The remaining student will be reassigned a new roommate… or a new room entirely."

He gestured toward a woman standing nearby.

"I will now call upon your dorm supervisor to assign your rooms."

"Mrs. Lilith."

A tall middle-aged woman stepped forward gracefully.

Her dark purple pleated skirt and blouse

She gave the students a thin smile.

"Good evening, students."

She held a large printed paper.

"Please ensure you receive a copy of the Dormitory Rules and Regulations."

Her voice sharpened slightly.

"Failure to comply will result in you being sent to sleep in the dungeon until you are ready to obey."

The entire hall erupted into shocked murmurs.

Eyes widened everywhere.

Mrs. Lilith raised a brow.

"Of course," she added dryly, "we are training future leaders, not criminals or wild animals. So I trust you will behave accordingly."

She began calling names.

"Princess Elara Hale and Sylvie Baron, step forward."

Two girls stood and approached the front to receive their key and rule sheet.

Name after name followed.

Students stood, collected their keys, room number, and returned to their seats.

Then suddenly,

"Princess Calypsera Ondine… and Princess Aurora Tide."

The hall gasped.

Whispers erupted instantly.

"What a match."

"The princess of the ocean and the siren princess sharing a room?"

"That's going to be chaos."

"Wait… isn't the siren princess the mute one?"

Calypsera slowly stood.

All eyes were on her.

She walked toward the stage quietly.

"I heard she cannot sing."

"Then why is she here?"

"What is a siren without her voice?"

"A waste," someone scoffed.

Nesera smirked faintly.

She heard every word.

And she enjoyed them.

She remained seated for a moment longer, watching Calypsera nervously twist her fingers.

Aurora noticed everything.

She was no fool.

She could see straight through the perfect sister act Nesera was trying to display.

Aurora stood and gently took Calypsera's hands.

"Let's go," she said firmly.

Calypsera allowed herself to be pulled forward.

Only then did Nesera finally stand.

She rushed toward them and grabbed Calypsera's other hand, almost as if she were protecting her.

She turned to Mrs. Lilith.

"My sister and I are twins," Nesera said loudly.

"We have been inseparable since birth. Since she is mute, she follows me everywhere. She cannot participate in the academy activities alone."

Her voice sounded worried.

Like a caring sister.

Before Mrs. Lilith could reply,

The Headmaster spoke.

"It's quite alright, Miss Ondine."

Alaric leaned slightly forward in his chair.

"We are already aware of your sister's inability to speak."

"We accepted both of you regardless."

"We do not see it as a disability."

His gaze sharpened slightly.

"In fact, we suggested to your parents that another representative be sent instead."

"But they insisted both of you attend."

"So yes…"

"You will both be tested individually here in Nocturne."

"Unless," he added calmly, "you wish to agree that if one fails… both of you fail."

A cold chill ran down Nesera's spine.

Agree?

Leave her future in the hands of that mute?

Absolutely not.

So she did what she always did best.

She chose herself.

"I understand," she said smoothly.

"But I would still love my sister to stay close to me. Perhaps we could share a room?"

"She cannot stay without me."

"We are twins."

Alaric shook his head.

"That I am well aware of."

"But here in Nocturne Academy, family ties hold no authority."

"You are here to be refined into leaders capable of making decisions without seeking family approval."

His voice carried finality.

"I believe that is all, Miss Ondine."

"Return to your seat and wait to be dismissed."

Nesera clenched her jaw.

But she obeyed.

She returned to her seat, pretending everything was fine.

Meanwhile, at the elite table

A young vampire sat lazily with his cousin.

He swirled a goblet of dark red blood as he watched the drama unfold with clear amusement.

"Well," he muttered quietly.

"This year might actually be interesting."

Soon the room assignments were completed.

The students were dismissed to their respective dormitories to prepare for the Initiation Ritual waiting for them at dawn.

But already…

Alliances, rivalries, and secrets had begun to form within the walls of Nocturne Academy.
