Chapter 7 - Chapter 7 – Secrets of the Hidden Lab

The hidden lab was darker than Ava had imagined. The faint hum of machinery echoed like a heartbeat, sending shivers down her spine. Dust floated in the air, disturbed only by their careful footsteps. Ava's hand never left her pendant, the only link to the parents she'd lost.

Julie and John moved ahead, scanning for traps, while Nick stayed right beside her. Every glance he gave her made her chest flutter—subtle, fleeting, but enough to make her forget, just for a second, the danger surrounding them.

Suddenly, the mysterious figure from the last chapter stepped out of the shadows. Their coat was dark, hood obscuring most of their face, but their eyes gleamed with knowledge—and mischief.

"Welcome, Ava," the stranger said. "I've been expecting you."

Ava's fingers tightened on her pendant. "Who… who are you? And what do you know about my parents?"

The figure's lips curved into a faint smile. "Everything. But the truth isn't free—you have to prove you're ready to handle it."

Before Ava could respond, alarms blared. Red lights flashed across the lab, and from the shadows emerged advanced non-human soldiers, stronger and faster than anything they had faced.

"Team, get ready!" John shouted.

The fight was chaotic. Julie darted through the shadows, taking precise shots, while John set traps that stunned the soldiers temporarily. Nick stayed close to Ava, shielding her, moving like a protective shadow. Ava swung her weapon with precision, fueled by anger, grief, and a need for answers.

In the middle of the chaos, a soldier lunged at Ava. Nick shoved her aside, taking the hit on his shoulder. Pain flared across his face, and Ava froze for a heartbeat, panic rising in her chest.

"Nick!" she yelled, grabbing his arm.

He shook his head, wincing. "I'm fine… just—don't stop. We finish this together."

Her heart thudded in a way she couldn't ignore. That moment—him protecting her—made the world melt away. Danger, clones, secrets—all of it blurred into the background.

Finally, the last soldier fell. The team stood, bruised, breathing hard. Ava looked at Nick, whose shoulder was bleeding slightly. Without thinking, she pressed her hand to his wound.

"You idiot," she whispered, but her voice trembled.

He caught her hand in his, holding it against his shoulder. "Don't worry… I can handle it. We've got each other, right?"

Ava's chest warmed. "Yeah… we've got each other."

The stranger clapped slowly from across the lab. "Impressive. You survived the test. Now… the truth awaits."

They led Ava to a table filled with files, pictures, and devices. One folder had her name scrawled across it—familiar handwriting that made her heart skip. Inside were documents about her parents' research, the clones, and their final mission—a mission to protect her from a world that wanted to erase their family's legacy.

Tears pricked her eyes. "They… they were trying to protect me all along?"

The stranger nodded. "Yes. But protecting someone like you is dangerous. The clone army, the non-humans, everything—they were created to control or destroy what you represent."

Ava sank to her knees, overwhelmed. Nick knelt beside her, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. "You're not alone, Ava. I'm here. We're all here."

She leaned into him slightly, letting herself breathe for the first time in years. In the midst of chaos, pain, and danger, Ava realized that maybe—just maybe—love, friendship, and courage could exist in this unnatural world.

And as the lab's lights flickered and shadows danced across the walls, Ava knew one thing for sure: the next part of her journey would be more dangerous, more thrilling… and more emotional than she could ever imagine.
