Chapter 4 - A dangerous pull

Chapter 4

Lena remained by the window long after Adrian stepped away.

Her heart was still racing, each beat echoing loudly in her ears. The city lights outside blurred as she tried to steady her breathing. The warmth of his touch lingered on her waist, on her lips, everywhere.

She pressed her fingers lightly against her mouth.

What just happened?

The soft music of the party continued in the background, but everything felt distant, like the world had shifted slightly off balance.

Adrian Wolfe had kissed her.

Twice.

And the worst part was that she had kissed him back.

Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of footsteps approaching again.

Of course it was him.

Adrian returned with two glasses of champagne, handing one to her casually as if they hadn't just shared something dangerously intimate moments ago.

"You look like you're overthinking," he said smoothly.

Lena accepted the glass, though her fingers brushed his for a brief second. The contact sent another small spark through her body.

"I'm not overthinking," she replied quickly.

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

"You're staring at the skyline like it personally offended you."

Despite herself, Lena let out a quiet laugh.

"Maybe the skyline is less complicated than you."

He chuckled, taking a slow sip of his drink.

"That's unlikely."

They stood in silence for a moment, the tension between them softer now but still very present.

Lena finally turned to face him.

"Adrian… what are we doing?"

His gaze met hers immediately, sharp and focused.

"That depends," he said calmly. "What do you think we're doing?"

She hesitated.

"I think…" she began slowly, searching for the right words, "I think we're playing with something that could get very messy."

A faint smile tugged at his lips.

"Messy doesn't always mean bad."

"It does when it involves people like us."

"And what kind of people are we?" he asked, clearly amused.

Lena sighed, running a hand through her hair.

"You're Adrian Wolfe. Billionaire. CEO. Media magnet."

"And you?" he prompted.

"I work for your company," she replied simply.

The implication hung in the air.

Adrian watched her for a moment, then leaned slightly closer again.

"So what you're saying," he murmured, "is that you want to pretend you didn't feel anything."

Her breath caught.

"That's not what I said."

"Good," he said quietly.

His eyes softened just slightly.

"Because I definitely felt something."

The honesty in his voice surprised her.

For the first time since meeting him, Adrian didn't sound teasing or confident. He sounded genuine.

Lena looked down at her champagne glass, watching the bubbles rise slowly.

"I don't usually do things like this," she admitted.

"Neither do I."

She glanced up, skeptical.

He smirked.

"Okay, that was a lie."

Lena rolled her eyes, but she couldn't stop the small smile forming on her lips.

"You're impossible."

"I've been called worse."

Another silence settled between them, but this one felt calmer.

Outside, thunder rumbled softly in the distance as rain began to fall against the tall glass windows.

Adrian glanced toward the storm.

"Looks like you're not leaving anytime soon," he said.

Lena followed his gaze.

The rain was coming down heavily now.

"That might be your fault," she said lightly.

"My fault?"

"If you hadn't distracted me earlier, I would have left before the storm."

He laughed quietly.

"Then I suppose I should apologize."

"But you won't," she said.

"No," he admitted. "I won't."

Their eyes met again.

The spark between them was still there — quieter now, but stronger somehow.

Lena felt it again.

That pull.

Dangerous.

Exciting.

Completely impossible to ignore.

Adrian placed his empty glass on the nearby table and straightened his jacket.

"You should head home once the rain slows," he said.

She nodded.

"Probably."

But neither of them moved.

Instead, they stood there for another long moment, watching each other as the storm raged outside.

Finally, Adrian spoke again.

"Lena."

"Yes?"

His voice was softer this time.

"That line we talked about earlier…"

Her pulse quickened.

"Yes?"

He held her gaze steadily.

"We're getting very close to crossing it."

The words sent a thrill through her chest.

Lena didn't respond immediately.

Because deep down, she already knew the truth.

She wasn't afraid of crossing the line.

She was afraid she might want to.
