Chapter 4 - Terms of Contact

Veiled Temptations Chapter 4 — Terms of Contact

The hallway upstairs was quiet.

Lux walked ahead of Kael, pushing open one of the doors near the end of the corridor.

"This one's empty," he said. "You can use it."

He stepped aside so Kael could enter first.

The guest bedroom was warm and softly lit, the automatic fireplace already burning low in the corner. A large bed stood against the far wall, neatly prepared by the manor's cleaning system.

Kael paused inside the room, taking a slow look around.

Lux leaned against the doorframe.

"If something's missing, tell me," he said. "The house inventory system can order things."

Kael turned back toward him.

"There is one thing I will need."

Lux raised an eyebrow.

"Already making requests?"

"Protective gloves."

Lux blinked.

"…Protective what?"

"Gloves," Kael repeated calmly. "Or insulated handling gear."

Lux stared at him.

"That sounds like something you'd use for radioactive waste."

Kael didn't react to the joke.

Lux straightened slightly.

"Why would I need handling gear?"

Kael answered carefully.

"Direct contact with me can affect people."

Lux frowned.

"That wasn't in the listing."

"I suspected it might not be."

Lux rubbed the back of his neck.

"Great. Mystery demon comes with hidden instructions."

Kael remained composed.

"My nature influences emotions," he explained. "Physical contact amplifies the effect."

Lux tilted his head.

"So touching you makes the whole… aura thing stronger."

"Yes."

Lux considered that for a moment.

Then curiosity crept across his face.

"How strong are we talking?"

Kael's eyes held his.

"Strong enough that you should not test it."

Lux grinned slightly.

"That sounds suspiciously like a challenge."

Before Kael could stop him, Lux stepped forward and reached out.

"Hypothetically—"

His fingers moved toward Kael's wrist.

They never made it.

Kael's hand moved with startling speed.

In one smooth motion he caught Lux's wrist before their skin could touch.

The grip was firm but controlled.

Lux froze.

"…Okay."

Kael released him immediately.

"You should not test that."

Lux stared at his wrist.

The movement had been unbelievably fast.

Not violent.

Not threatening.

Just precise.

Lux flexed his fingers slowly.

"That was… very not human."

Kael said nothing.

Lux looked up again, studying him with new attention.

The guy looked calm. Composed. Handsome enough to belong on a magazine cover.

But apparently he could move like a striking animal.

Lux exhaled quietly.

"Alright," he said. "No touching the mystery demon. Got it."

Kael inclined his head slightly.

"Thank you."

Lux pushed away from the doorway.

"Well," he said. "Let's go downstairs before this turns into a safety lecture."

The fire in the main living room had grown stronger while they were upstairs.

Lux dropped onto one end of the couch and stretched out his legs toward the heat.

"Okay," he said, gesturing to the chair nearby. "Sit."

Kael did.

For a few moments they simply listened to the quiet crackle of the fireplace.

Lux leaned back against the cushions.

It happened again.

That warmth.

The same strange comfort he'd been feeling since Kael arrived.

Except now it seemed to settle around him more deeply.

His shoulders relaxed without him meaning them to.

He frowned slightly.

Kael noticed.

Of course he noticed.

His aura was spreading again.

And Lux was responding far too easily.

Kael slowly tightened control over the energy bleeding into the room.

The warmth dimmed.

Lux shifted faintly.

"…Huh."

Kael watched him.

"What is it?"

Lux shook his head.

"Nothing. Just felt weird for a second."

Kael said nothing.

Lux looked back at the fire.

"So," Lux said after a moment. "This companion contract thing."

Kael lifted his gaze.

"You belong here under the terms of the purchase, right?"

"Yes."

Lux frowned slightly.

"That wording is weird."

"It is a legal framework," Kael replied.

Lux rested his head against the couch.

"And what does that mean for you, exactly?"

"It means I am assigned to you," Kael said calmly. "I remain with you as your companion."

Lux snorted quietly.

"Sounds like I bought the world's most expensive roommate."

Kael didn't disagree.

The fire crackled softly between them.

After a moment Lux spoke again.

"You don't talk much about yourself."

Kael met his gaze.

"There is not much to say."

Lux gave him a skeptical look.

"You're a mystery demon with emotional influence powers."

"That description is inaccurate."

"Then correct it."

A brief pause followed.

Finally Kael said quietly,

"My kind survives by influencing desire."

Lux blinked.

"…Okay that's way more concerning."

Kael remained calm.

"I am controlling it."

Lux studied him for a long moment.

Then he leaned back again.

"Well," he said, "so far you haven't tried to seduce me into signing over my house."

"I would not do that."

Lux huffed softly.

"Good."

The warmth in the room had faded slightly now.

Lux didn't realize why.

But Kael did.

He was keeping his aura restrained.

Because Lux Ardent was reacting to it far more strongly than he should.

And if Kael allowed it to spread freely…

Lux might begin feeling things neither of them were prepared to deal with yet.
